Not since the wedding on Prince Charles and Lady Diana has there been such an anticipated nuptial event. The April 29th wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton has experience wide and extensive media coverage across the United States.
Every aspect of their relationship and wedding preparations has been covered in the news somehow. If you walk up and down the aisle of any grocery store, the tabloids are riddled with stories. Everything from what they are wearing, to who is invited, to the cost of the event has been reported in print and on the internet.
It intrigues me as to why this event is so seemingly important to the people of the United States. It is interesting in our country, which fought against the ideas of monarchies, finds such fascination with the British Royal family. One possible explanation is our constant need to celebrate and elevate celebrities in society. Another is society may still have a need to have kings and queens, princes and princesses in our world. With all the war, tension and stress in the world, we may need to take a break and bask in the idea of royalty. Regardless, I would not be surprised to find many people I know that are planning on waking up at 4:00 am Friday morning to watch the event live. (This would include my wife if she didn’t enjoy her sleep so much)
Why do you think the Royal Wedding is so popular in the United States? What do you think of the British Royal family? Is the royal family still necessary to Great Britain? Do we still need the idea of royalty in the world?
Halle- I think that we are so interested in the royal wedding is because we havent seeen a lot of things like this. Its not every day you see a princesses and princes getting married. Its kind of a once in a lifetime thing. It's also not very common in the US. You dont see it every day. I think that kate and william are a cute couple haha. Except hes bald. but thats ok. ANd the royal family wears really weird hats which i don't understand. I think they are still necessary to Great britain. if they werent why would a bunch of people watch kate and williams wedding? i do think we need the idea of royalty in the family. It keeps the diversity in the governments
ReplyDeleteHannah- I think we are so interested in the royal family because like Halle said we are not used to something like that and we tend to be interested in celebrities.I saw parts of the royal wedding out of curiosity. Everyone looked really good except some of the guests had really big strange hats. I don't think the royal family is necessary to Great Britain, I think they are just more of an icon now. I don't think we need the idea of royalty.
ReplyDeleteMarya- this is like a fairytale. and the USA doesnt have princes and princesses. thats why the royal wedding was such a big deal. its not like we have palaces and horse drawn carriages. our idea of royalty is Hollywood: celebrities. i didnt watch the royal wedding but i did see a picture on the news and some people were wearing weird outfits. based on how popular the wedding was, i think the royal family is important to Great Britain... not so much to us though. and im not sure anything would change if we didnt have royalty.
ReplyDeleteAngie- I think that everyone's really interested in the wedding because it doesn't happen often. I think that since the U.S. doesn't have anything like royalty, we find it unique in other countries. The Royal family looks nice. I don't know what I think of them. I'm not sure if the Royal family is still needed or if we still need royalty in the world. I find the royalty ways interesting but I'm not sure if they're still neccessary in the world. I really have no opinion about that. I guess it's nice to have something unique in a different country like royalty with kings, queens, princes, and princesses. It's nice to have something different than the U.S. I'm not saying that we need royal families but I'm not saying that we don't need them either. With or without would be fine either way with me.
ReplyDeleteDanielle- I think the royal wedding is so popular in the U.S because down in England they celebrate weddings differently, especially for a royal family because they are like celebrities and just famous for being rich and royal. Americans are interested in stuff like that. The royal family is very cool but they do dress a lot differently and nicer and wear very strange hats. The royal family is pretty necessary to great Britian but they sort of aren't because they are mostly just known for being rich and royal. I don't think we need the idea of royalty we are perfectly fine :)

The royal family is really cool i think because its gone on for so many years and i think that would be really cool to be a king or a queen. I think it is completly neccesary for us because it was everyones dream to become a prince or a princess when we were five or six and i think it should stay around so that the little kids still can dream. i think we still need the idea of roalty because it makes us feel like its still the old midevil times where there were kings and queens
ReplyDeleteMorgan- I think that the Royal Wedding is so popular because there has not been an event like this in forever. We don't have many events like this in the US. I like the thought of the British Royal family because its something we don't have. I think that the Royal family is and is not neccesary, its neccesary because it is a tradition and has been around for so many years, its not neccesary because they don't make any big decisions they are kinda just there. Yes we still do need royalty in the world because its what makes our cultures different and fun.
ReplyDeleteCooper- I think people like it so much because we dont have a monarchy and Americans want to believe the fairy tales about the king and the queen. The Royal family has problems just like everyone else,but they are held to a higher standard. Until the laws change they are necessary. Yes we still need royalty because that type of government still works for some.

Most girls when they are younger imagine being princessess and getting married to a prince and all that kind of stuff so they want to see their childhood fantasies come true even if they arnt the ones becoming princesses. i dont know much about the royal family. The royal family is not needed they are just there so that people can say. hey look its the prince or hey look its the queen. We do need royalty in some ways but those ways arnt very important.

ReplyDeletePhillip- I honestly have no idea why the royal wedding is so popular in the United States. I guess people are just curious because a monarchy is very alien system to us. I think the Royal Family is way over publicized. I mean all they do is just sit on thier butts and get rich. The Queen only assigns parliamentary changes. She doesn't even write the speech she gives on Christmas. They aren't really necessary because of this, but people always need someone to invision as a leader. So I guess they are sort of necessary. I don't think WE need the idea of roaylty. ENGLAND needs the idea of royalty needs royalty because they're so accustomed to them. Overall, I think the royal family are just a bunch of over publicized rich people that do nothing but read speeches.
ReplyDeleteRyan Z.- I totally agree with Phillip. Why is the royal wedding so interesting to us? We're American we shouldn't care about what the British are doing! But I think maybe the reason so many people watch the royal wedding is because they just want something new to oooh and ahhhh over. I personally do not understand the monarchy or why anyone needs a monarchy, but like I said before they're British and they're different from us so I don't really care what they're doing.
ReplyDeleteCristina- the royal wedding was so popular in the united staes because it is a big deal and a royal wedding doesn't happen every year. the last last big one was in 1981. part of it is because there is a fariy tale aspect to the event.lots of people are fascinated by kinngs, queens,princes,princess, and the way they live.i think the royal family is very well manner, bring lots of attention to social issues and charitys. And they are like celbritys beecause the world they live in is so different from ours. they are importanat because england use to be ruled by kings and queens and that blood line in tradition is part of englands history. the world needs royality because it would be sad to see the tradition go away.

I think that the royal family is cool and all but I still think that british people are kinda weird. Im not too, too familiar with the UK's government but I think that they would be able to survive with out the royal family, with the prime minister and all. Sometimes it is important to keep the royalty in a country but sometimes it is pretty much pointless.

I think that the royal wedding is such a big thing because we dont have big stuff like that or queens and kings plus this will be the next "Rulers"of England i can see how its big to the people in England but i can understand over hear in the US. The UK would be panicking but they would find a way to get though the tough time.
ReplyDeletegabby- i think that people in the us are so obsessed with the fact that people can be king, queen, princes and princess etc. that is why people were so excited about the wedding. and maybe even people want to be royal so that why they watched. i even watched but i was very bored, the only thing i liked was the hats of the other people. i dont really know anything about the british royal family so it wouldnt be fair to say something about them. i think that we do need to have the idea of princesses and stuff like that but i think that even if their wasnt a british royal family the idea would still be there because of the media.
