April 22 marks the 31 Earth Day in the United States. The idea for a day dedicated to the environment originated 7 years earlier by Senator Gaylord Nelson. He was concerned over the lack to awareness and regulations of the pollutants being released into our world. Now more than 30 years later, Earth Day and its organizers have increased public awareness of pollutants, identified and promoted “green” acts, have leveraged our schools and communities to enhance the knowledge and dedication of our youth to the cause, and countless other accomplishments.
The Earth Day websites is tracking personal pledged to commit “green” acts. The pledges include recycling grocery bags, unplugging appliances, recycle paper and plastic, and buying more local food. While each of these acts may seem futile on their own, the impact of the collected group across the globe will have a significant impact on our environment, especially over an extended period of time. To date the website has over 80 million personal pledges. What do you think of Earth Day? What are some additional ways we can support Earth Day at school and in our community? What are things you do at home? Are there any additional activities you would be willing to commit to at home to support “green” living?
Travis- I think it is important to try to conserve the earth and all that, but It is kinda a waste of a day, (I'd rather have puppy day!). We can like go plant a tree or water some plants or something like that to help support earth day. I personally don't usually do anything at home for earth day but i could like plant a tree or something like that. We could totally get like solar panels or something like that.
ReplyDeleteMorgan- I think Earth Day is great because it brings attention to how we need to take care of the earth. To support Earth Day we could plant trees, pick up garbage, and make the earth green! Some things that I do at home are mostly just recycling. Things that I could do to support green living are unplug, eat local and organic foods, and plant plats and make the earth green.
ReplyDeleteAngie- Earth Day is an important day to me. I think its a day where everyone can go outside and play or plants trees or something! There are so many ways we can help our environment! Recycling, conserving, not wasting water/energy, etc. Solar panels are helpful too! At home, I recycle and try not to waste energy. I also garden with my family too. I would be willing to do other activities that involve helping the environment and such. I think that Earth Day lets everyone remember to conserve and to help the environment!
ReplyDeleteLuke- I think that Earth Day is probably one of the most important calendar day of the year because we are suppose to focus on trying to support a good cause such as recycling and reusing and reducing.( the three R's) A possible way to help support the meaning of Earth Day is maybe to teach the younger kids what recycling is and why it helps the environment. Things I do at home are turn off all the lights when I'm not in the room try to turn off the sink while brushing my teeth, and shorter showers. I think that Earth Day teaches us to conserve energy and help save the environment!
ReplyDeleteMarya- Earth Day is pretty importnat becuase it is focusing on helping the Earth by recycling and not wastng energy. Yeah i might go out and plant a tree or something. At home i recycle, turn off the lights, and i we have this little garden in our yard. I like how we got the big blue recycling can along with the normal trash can. that really helps me recycle more. Earth Day is a good day to think about all the valuable things we have and that we shouldnt waste them!
ReplyDeleteI think Earth Day is a great day to be more aware about the Earth and a great dayt to do something "green". Earth day really helps us recognize what's going on and whats happening to hte Earth. At home i recycle whenever i can and we turn off the lights when we dont use them. At school we should turn the lights off in the classrooms when we arent in them or dont need them on. I think at home I could use less plastic bottles. and if i do i should recycle them instead of throwing them away
ReplyDeleteDanielle- Earth day is very important because we need to realize how wonderful Earth really is, so in that case we need to go green and protect it. At school, when we see trash on the ground we can pick it up and recycle. We can also turn off the lights when we aren't using them. We can also, instead of using up fossil fuels while driving, we can ride bikes. We can recycle plastic bottles and tin cans too. We can do anything that will help to support our Earth!!
ReplyDeletePhillip- I think earth day is s good day. To help out our community, we could recycle all of the food that we don't eat at lunch, and put it into a composter. At my house, we recycle. I guess we could turn off the water while brushing our teeth to be more "green".
ReplyDeletekaed- i am not a big fan of earth day because of 1 main reason. I dont believe in recycling. But i do believe that the people who live on Earth need to keep the world more clean and beautiful. I think it is a good way to keep the Earth clean, but if we are going to try and help the planet be more "green" we need to get rid of all of the pollution in the air. Someone needs to make an invention that will take the pollution out of the air or something(dont really know).
ReplyDeleteRyan M- I think earth day is great because it saves our planet and reminds people that we still need to preserve our earth. We can support earth day by having a complete green day for one day i think t hat would be cool. I dont really do anything at home i just now its earth day. I cant really think of any and i think we should see how it goes with no electricity
ReplyDeleteAtticus- I think that earth day is an improtand day because it "inspires" some people to conserve and think of the outcome of litering or wasting water etc. We could all bring in money and try to rebuild the forests with that money. At my house we recycle and put uneaten food into a composter. Something my family could do to be more "green" is we could take shorter showers and try to turn off the lights more often.
ReplyDeleteSofia- I think earth day is a great day. In our community we could start a group that goes out each earth day and plants a certain amount of tree's in a field. At home i just try to recycle eveyrthing that is recycleable. We could try to use more green things in our society.
ReplyDeletejosu- i think earth day is a very important day, but you shouldnt only be thinking to be green on earth day. it should be Earth day everyday. to be more green as a community we should plant more trees, recycle more, and stop throwing trash on the ground. when you are brushing your teeth you should turn off the water. As a community we should recycle more. people do recycle but not as much as they could.
ReplyDeleteRyan Z.- I think that Earth Day is a tremendous waste of time and energy (pun intended) because I just think that we have bigger things to worry about than the Earth right now. The Earth is the Earth and it was fine before us and will fine when we're gone (that's right human extinction is inevitable). To think that we (the puny human race) could do something as substantial as "destroy" the Earth is naive and stupid. Nature is so much more powerful than us that if the Earth where to be in "danger" then we would all be swept up by the tide or something and the Earth would wipe it's slate clean and start over again. The human race has been on the face of the Earth for 0.0044% of it's existence do you honestly think that we can do anything that the Earth won't be able to repair? So don't worry about it, if we're "endangering" the Earth then we'll all just die and that'll be the end of it.
ReplyDeletegabby- i completely disagree with ryan, i think that if we don't do something about us polluting the earth there isnt going to be an earth and the human race. if we dont do something soon there will be no nature for future generations. if we dont have nature we die and there will be no future generations. in fact i think that earth day shouldn't once a year, i think it should be once a month. i think recycling should be enforced, and people should try harder to save the earth and go green. i think ryan,no offense, people like you are going to cause further pollution and more destruction and are the reason we have so much pollution. but not just you because everyone has contributed to the pollution. we need to start doing more things that might just be small like turning off lights, turning off the water while brushing your teeth or shorter showers. i think if everyone did small things like that we would make an impact on the pollution that we have done.
ReplyDeleteCooper- I think earth day is an important day because we need to learn to plant more trees and recycle more often.Keep our community more clean. We recycle often. Turn the water off when im brushing my teeth.
ReplyDeleteHannah- Sorry Ryan but I completely and utterly disagree with you (like Gabby). And yes Ryan we other big things to deal with but the earth THE PLANET WE LIVE ON!!!! Is extremely important and I think that the human race has and will continue (unfortunately) to do damage to the plant. So I think Earth Day is a great day and really makes people think about how they can help the planet. Doing big things is GREAT like solar panels, planting trees, etc. but when everyone does little things we can make a huge impact. Just simple things like turning off water when you're brushing your teeth, turning off lights, unplugging chords when their not in use, planting a garden, recycling. I try to do all of these things and if everyone does I think that we can really turn things around :)
ReplyDeleteHannah- Oh and using your own bags at stores
ReplyDeleteCristina- i think of earth day as being cultish. it's become the politically popular cause yo be a part of. it's become too much of an actual religion to some crazy people that have everything green in their homeand want everyone to live like them. my family watch earht by disney and at the end the "papa" polar bear dies and it says his spirit will always be with the cubs. the only thing that those cubs care about is there next meal and how do the camera people know that it's the papa??? our school already does so much recycling so i think we are ok about that. my family has a blue recycle bin at home and we don't litter. what we do at home is enough because my dad says that recycling is more expensive then just throwing away your trash.
ReplyDeletep.s. for cristina, i agree with ryan z.!!!
