Bob Marley

May 11 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Bob Marley.  If you think his death was just another unfortunate end to a musician, you would be wrong.  Bob Marley was revolutionary in his music and his message.  He used his art to inspire millions of people in developed and developing countries to look for peace and acceptance.  He hoped to inspire people to stand up for themselves, their rights and the rights of others.

Bob Marley was born Robert Nesta Marley in a poor village in Jamaica.  His father was a white Jamaican-born, British national and his mother was a black Jamaican.  His mixed ethic background led to considerable ridicule and abuse during Marley’s childhood.  His father left the family when he was young having little contact with his son.

Bob soon found acceptance through music.  While living in Trench Town, a poverty stricken part of Kingston, he met his childhood and musical friends, Bunny Livingston and Peter McIntosh (later known as Peter Tosh).   Together they would explore the music of reggae and ska.  The three would form a group called the Wailing Wailers and released their first record in 1964.  They gained extensive notoriety throughout Jamaica, but it would be another 11 years until their music was widely played in England and 12 years until they would have their first American hit.

During this time, Bob’s music and message took on a more spiritual and political nature.  Exploring the religion of Rastafarian, Marley reached the hearts and minds of millions of Third World citizens.  Their first American hit “War” was based on a speech by Ethiopian leader Halle Selassie.  His controversial political views and his continued support of the Peoples Nation Party in Jamaica led to an assassination attempt in 1976.  Bob was shot twice, once in the sternum and once in the bicep.  While not being mortally wounded, Bob refused to allow the sustained injuries to prevent him from playing the scheduled show days later.

1977 proved to be a significant year in his life.  First, he and his band released the album Exodus.  The album was such a huge success its singles stayed on the charts for the next three tears.  Songs including “Waiting in Vain”, “Exodus”, and “Jammin’” make this one of the best albums ever released.  In addition, 1977 included the discovery of cancerous cells in his toes.  While his religious belief prevented him from current medical procedures, he found some relief through natural remedies.

He was able to continue to create and inspire for another four year until in 1981 the cancer spread throughout his body.  His funeral was attended by over 30,000 people in Jamaica.  Before his death he was awarded the Order of Merit from the Jamaican government and the Medal of Peace from the United Nations in 1980.

His music still inspires people today.  His message of peace, unity and strength are as relevant today as they were 30+ years ago.  He is revered in his homeland and in many African nations.

Do you or have you ever listened to Bob Marley’s music?  If so, do you like it?  Do you think music can change the world?  Why or why not?  What music do you listen to and why?  Are there any artists today trying to change the world through their craft?  Who and how?

  1. Halle- I have listened to Bob Marley's music before a couple times and i do like it. I think music can defienetely change the world. It changes the way we act and the way we think about things. Even one song can just change us and how we think about things. I like listening to lots of different kinds of music. I like some country bands cause their music is different. it can sound like country and something you would hear on 103.3 too.
i also like listening to Eminem and Jenifer Lopez. Basically anything on 103.3. I think Lady Gaga is trying to change the world with her weird music and outfits. Why else would she write disturbing songs and wear creepy outfits?

  3. Phillip- I have listened to Bob Marley music before. It is not my favorite type of music, but it's ok. I think music can change the world. If you listen to music enough, the lyrics will get stuck in your head, and you'll start to believe them. I listen to a genre of music called dubstep. Dubstep is loosley related to Reggae music like Bob Marley made. Dubstep orriginated from the music genres: 2-step, drum & bass, grime, and dub. Dub orriginated from: reggae, ska, and rocksteady(the genres Bob Marley plays). I would have to agree that Lady GaGa is trying to change the world.

  4. Morgan- I have listened to Bob Marley before and I really like it. I think his music is so up beat and happy that why wouldn't people want to get along when listening to it. Music can change the world by the thoughts of people. After people listen to happy music like Bob Marley people will start to belive that they need to have peace with one another. Any music can change peoples minds. I listen to PItbull, Lady GaGa, Kesha, J LO, and Kate Parry. IK listen to these artists because their music is so up beat and it gets me ready before a tennis match or other events. I think that Lady GaGa is trying to change the world because she is trying to be out there and let people know that you can be different. Some people are going with it like me but others are just making fun of her. I think that she is a great artist.

  5. Travis- I do listen to Bob Marley music and really like it. It is so smooth and relaxing. I think that music can definitley change the world. Not always in a positive way but also not always in negative way people who listen to music about certain thing like christian music will probably start doing whatever stuff they listen to. so its not just the music, its the listeners who change the world. I listen to country and pop and hip-hop and R&B. Definitly lady gaga but shes wierd and isn't trying to make the world a better place she just wants everyone to be wierd like her.

  6. Danielle- Um i have heard a few songs by Bob Marley they were pretty good actually. I think music can change the world. Some music is just so inspiring to people it just makes them want to listen to it more and more and it inspires people to sing and write songs. I listen to a lot of Pop music like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez, Ke$ha, pitbull, Katy Perry and more fun Pop artists. I like pop music because a lot of pop songs have good beats and fun to dance to. I agree that Lady Gaga is trying to change the world of music because she just wants to express herself and open up to new music and make people realize how different she can be. :)

  7. Luke- I Am currently listening to Bob Marley right now! and i do like it alot the song is No woman,no cry. The album is Bob Marley & The Wailers:live! Genre: Reggae. I definitely think that music can change the world. But some music can be much more effective then others. I think that song that inspire people can be good and bad. like in some songs they cuss frequently and if little kids hear it they just repeat what they hear. But some songs can make older people if they understand the lyrics go out and do something helpful for the world like picking up trash or helping homeless people. I listen to Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Kanye West , Lady Gaga pitbull and Eminem. I think that Lady Gaga is trying her best to change the world and is just expressing her feeling that she was born that way. I also think that music makes people realize to just be them self.

Music can change the world, if the music inspires people they can change the world with the music in their heads.I listen to all different kinda of music, my music taste is all of the place i like most music except country... I think that lady gaga is trying to change the world with her weird and out there outfits and odd songs, she is trying to show people to be themselves, even if you are as weird as lady gaga.

  9. Hannah- I don't listen to Bob Marley very much but I like what I've heard. I think music is very powerful it can change how you're feeling. I listen to pretty much anything on 103.3. I can't think of an artist that is really trying to change the world (for good) a lot of artists talk about self expression like Lady Gaga.

  11. Angie- I've listened to Bob Marley's songs before. I like it because it actually has meaning instead of stupid songs today that are about nothing. I think music can change the world. It can really change how people think of things in life. I can't think of any artists who change the world. They just do songs to make money. Their songs have no meaning at all. They're not trying to change the world through music. They just want songs that are catchy and entertaining. Bob Marley actually did music to change the world. I listen to a lot of different songs. I'm not picky with music I listen to.

  12. Ryan Z.- I really like Bob Marley's lyrics because they are symbolic and meaningful but I do not like reggae so I don't listen to it. The kinds of music I listen to are Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Muse, 3oh!3, Kid Cudi, The Lonely Island, Cobra Starship, Kanye West, MGMT, and Eminem. The reasons I like all of these artists is because all of their songs have some sort of hidden symbolic meaning which makes them cool to listen too because not only do they have good beats and background music but the artists were smart when they put the lyrics together. I do think that Bob Marley influenced so people because seriously, just go to the mall and you will see at least three people with Bob Marley t-shirts on. I think that a lot of artists sing about "self expression" because they have nothing better to sing about and just want an excuse to be weird. Lady Gaga comes to mind whenever... well really whenever you're talking about music. Which is pretty cool to think that a woman who was a go-go dancer three years ago is now a highly revered household name. So do I think that any of today's popular artists are changing the world like Bob Marley did? Probably not, but a lot of famous musicians had really bad lives and now their super rich which is a tribute to the American dream which is kinda cool.

  15. josu-i listen to bob marley quite often. i like his music because you can actually understand the lyrics without looking them up. There is also very little cussing in the reggae that i have listened to. Ithink music can change the world because tons of people listen to music and listen to the lyrics of the song. Some people go out and do what the lyrics tell them to. I listen to anytiype of music no matter the genre. There is a rapper, immortal technique, who sings songs trying to inform people that gang life is bad, but his songs arnt the best. i think all singers influence the world in one way or another.

  16. gabby- i've listened to bob marley a couple of times, i think his music is good and it has lyrics that are inspiring. i think that music can change the world because people listen to music and are probably influenced by the song whether they realize it or not. my favorite artists are kanye west, eminem and mike posner, but i will listen to whatever song like. i listen to songs cause i like them, but the thing with songs a like i will like them then i will hear them to much and get really really annoyed when they are played. i think that artists aren't really interested in changing the world, but more like making money. but they are probably i affecting the way people act without trying.
