The 2010 mid-term elections are over and done. If you read the paper or looked on the Internet you will read about the GOP's (Grand Old Party, a.k.a. The Republican Party) overwhelming success at the national and local level. The Republicans gained 60 seats in the US House of Representatives, 6 Senate seats and 7 Governorships. While the Republicans did not take control of the Senate, the majority enjoyed by the Democrats is much slimmer now.It is true that in the last 24 mid-term elections, the President's party has lost seats, but never to this extent. This is the single largest shift in political power since World War II. It is the consensus this was less of a Republican victory and more of a Democratic defeat. Democratic Congressmen, who won 2 years ago with over 60% of the vote, were crushed by Republican newcomers. Many agree, the public is not swinging conservative, but they are willing to try something new in order to get the economy moving again. They are giving the Republicans their chance to get things done. The people are sick and tired of political meandering and are looking for solutions. They are tired of unemployment, layoffs, and foreclosures. They want jobs, security and disposable income.
Even within the Republican ranks, their are new faces. The Tea Party has come to the table with new ideas about the way the government should behave and the actions that should be taken. Their initial focus is gong to be making sure the Bush tax cuts remain intact, government spending is slowed to a responsible level and health care laws are rescinded. The public is watching. They seem to like what they are hearing, but they want action. Without noticeable improvement in the lives of everyday Americans, the Republican controlled House will be short lived. If they can pull off many of the changes and the public feels better, the Democrats may be in for further trouble in two short years.
What do you think about the election results? What do you think will happen in the short term and the long term? Do you think the government will find a way to get things done or will the Republican House and Democratic President create a stalemate of ideas and prevent any real progress? How do you think they should work together?
Again, I don't really pay attention to the elections unless it's for the president elections. But I heard that Republicans got the House and Democrats got the Senate... let's see how that'll turn out. Two years ago Democrats won by quite a bit, but this year Republicans won. I tried watching CNN about the elections this morning with my dad, but then I got bored because they kept arguing and interrupting each other so you couldn't understand what anyone was saying. What I did hear was that like it was a big shock that Replublicans won or something like that. Though it will be hard to work with a Republican House adn Democratic President, I think they'll be able to settle things... maybe. Who knows how it'll turn out? I think it should work out though. But I just have one thing to say: GO REPUBLICANS!
ReplyDeleteAngie- Oh wow, I forgot my name AGAIN. That post was by Angie!
ReplyDeleteRyan Z.-to start off no this post won't be as long as the last. However I think that Mr. Grant is wrong. There won't be a huge stalemate because way more of the house is conservative (that means republican kiddies)only a little more of the senate is liberal (just take a guess I'm sure you'll figure it out)and only slightly more of the governorships are liberal than conservative. So I think that a lot more of the republican-type laws and ideas will heard and passed. I think it's also kind of rediculous that the republicans had the senate 53 to 6 at the begining of the night and then we lost the senate, but the opposite of that also happened in the house so that's pretty cool. But something else that I was like the only person on the planet that seemed think about it was that anyone who was running for re-election in anything is going to lose because things really suck and that's the people who were in office a week ago's fault. So everyone who votes will say "I want them out let's try something new" not necessarily true in Idaho but everywhere else absolutely. One last thing if you want to see the numbers and percentages of the election go to http://www.politico.com/2010/maps/#/House/2010 It's good.
ReplyDeleteYep that was still pretty long. I failed! I'm gonna go cry now.
ReplyDeleteAtticus- I also dont really pay atentinon to elections unless they are involving the new president. I think that this years elections were a up set because the democrats have won for a while but now the republicans have won. I think that it will be hard to work out that the house is republican and the president is democrat but I think it will work. I think that the way they should work together is by saying 'We arent going to get anywhere by fighting we just nead to come to some type of an agreement'.
ReplyDeleteMorgan- I dont pay that much attention to elections unless we are electing a new president. I think the election results are good. But again I dont now that much about politics because I dont agree with them all and we are not yet old enough to vote so why should it be a concern to us. I dont think that the democrats and the republicans will putt their differences aside and get things done. They both belive in different things and disagree with eachother on everything so to me it looks like we will get nothing done. If they really wanted to help out the U.S. they have to agree with eachother. It is a big mess right now in politics. This is the time that we need to help out the U.S.
ReplyDeleteTravis-I am pretty happy with the results, but i think that they won't create a stalemate but i also don't think that they will make ground breaking progress. I think that when the presidential elections come around and big changes are made, that is when i think that our country will change dramaticly.
ReplyDeletekaed- im happy that republicans won pretty most all of the seats. also I dont think that they won't create a stalemate. Also I hope when the presidental elections come around a republican person will win the presidental elections.
ReplyDeleteCristina- I am VERY happy of the results! I am a rebulican and that why! I think that the short term that the democracts will loss again and again and longf erm rebulicans will go all the way! I think that both partys will get along for once and make this country. I say they should just take there differentences and be the best they can be!!!
ReplyDelete(P.S I agree with Angie!!!!)
Maddy- I dont pay much attention to politics. But i hope that the government will listen to us insted of just doing what they want to do like both parties seem to do. Because they say there all about the peolpe until they get picked.
ReplyDeleteHalle- I really don't pay attention to politics. I didn't even know who was running. I was pretty happy with the results. I really have no idea what will happen in the short term or long term. I think they should just agree on something to try and work together
ReplyDeleteHannah- Like I said in the last post- I don't pay attention to politics because they confuse me and I am not old enough- and they kind of bore me. Anyway I think the results were good because as said by several before- it used to be mostly democrats and now it is mostly republicans. I think they won the majority because they want to give the republicans a shot to get things done fast. I am not sure how it will turn out- I think having a democrat president should be an interesting mix. Let's just hope things get done and the people work together!
ReplyDeleteHannah- when I said "they want to give the republicans a shot" I meant the people who voted. Sorry my post was kind of confusing :)
ReplyDeleteDanielle- I am happy about the results! I mean I don't really pay attention to it that much. I just like who ever my parents want to win. The votes use to be democracts but now all the republicans pretty much won. They won because like my parents some democracts want to raise beer and wine taxes. My parents work 4 a distributing company so they didnt want that to happen. it sort of depends both democracts and republicans are different. I mean like i said i don't really pay attention to politics I mean maybe some democracts will make a difference who knows.
ReplyDeleteLuke- Ryan you know alot about Elections and results. I personally like the republicans more than the democrats and i think that it is great for the U.S. Republicans Party to have gained sixty seats. I think that it is a good thing that the republicans gained so many seats because it caused something thats had never happened before to happen and made it so there is a more even amount of Republicans and Democrats.
ReplyDeletejosu-i was not too happy with some the election results. i think they could get along but it will probably not happen in the next few weeks peobably not even this year but in the end the will get along. if both sides use mrs. g communication skills they could choose the best ideas and get us out of this economic crisis.
ReplyDeleteRyanM-i was happy with most of the election results bu not all. i think that the houses could get along but not for some time, but its just a matter of time before they all get along and our government wont be as bad. if they communicated and used conflict resoulution skills. if mrs g were there she could staighten things out
ReplyDeletecooper- I think the elections were a positive step towards fixing our country people are obviously unhappy with the economy based on how its been doing. In the short term spending might be rained in and in the long term jobs will be created. By the way people voted the govt the govt has to work together. God Bless America
ReplyDeleteGabby- I think the elections could have turned out better because now it is going hard to get things through the republican house then verified ( oh ya! we should get a rock for that!) by the democratic president. I think people voted all the "new" republicans for change, but is that seriously going to work? I think that barely anything will pass through, which means less change which is exactly what America didn't want. I think the best hope would be that maybe the opposing parties should try to work together on rare occasions, but I think it is still important that they disagree, that way people are still fighting and trying to make this country a better place. Isn't that the whole point of all of this just to make the country better? I think the aren't really going to have a major effect, except for the fact that the house is mostly republican. Therefore i honestly don't think that any big changes are going to happen because of the opposing parties, because i doubt they will both agree on something often.
ReplyDeleteSofia- I think the election's result could have been better because the people wanted change and now that there are all republicans and a democratic president. Decisions are goong to be hard to make and very complicated. THe people wanted change and wanted things to move quickly, but now thngs might work slowly and not turn out well. BUt if the opposing parties work together well enough then we could at least function as a nation and get things passed quickly. p.s. Sorry i didn't post on sunday i was helping my aunt move
ReplyDeletePhillip- I'm late... :( I believe thatthe voters voted the way they did because they believed that the democrats should've fixed the economy by now. So they are going to try republican. Anything can happen in the future. It is almost impossible to predict. They probably won't get anything done. They will disagree on everything, but i hope they will eventually get along.
