Jimmy V Week

“Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”
Jimmy Valvano, 1993 – announcing the Jimmy V Foundation
November 30 - December 9 is Jimmy V week on ESPN.  You may not know who Jimmy Valvano was, but if you have had the misfortune of knowing someone afflicted with cancer, the odds are he and his life’s mission impacted your life.

Jimmy Valvano was a successful basketball coach, commentator, and author.  He was a person of strong conviction and personal drive.  At an early age he pulled out white index cards and began to write down his personal goals for life.  He wanted to play high school and college basketball, he wanted to become an assistant coach, go on to become a head coach, cut down the nets in Madison Square Garden and win a National Championship.  At age 36, he was able to pull out those cards and cross off every item on the list.  Throughout his life he developed a personal philosophy which allowed an ordinary man to accomplish the extraordinary.  He was commented, “There are 86,400 seconds in a day.  It is up to you to decide what to do with them.”  Jimmy V chose to cherish and make the most of each one.

After accomplishing his goals on the basketball court, he explored new directions from writing to commentating.  He was not interested in limiting himself to a single profession.  He embraced diversity in his life and his interests.

In 1993, Jimmy Valvano was given an obstacle that would prove to be his most difficult.  He was diagnosed with cancer.  The cancer proved to be too much for him to personally overcome, but through his vision and passion he has inspired and continues to inspire funding for education and research to cure cancer.  At the time of his diagnosis, cancer was an underfunded and devastating disease.  His charismatic and infectious attitude towards life and easy appeal to people made him an ideal person to raise the awareness of cancer and its impacts on our world and to raise arms to find a way to cure cancer.  While no cure has been found, through continued research many forms of treatment have been developed.  The Jimmy V Foundation has risen over $100 million in the past 20 years to fund cancer awareness and research.

Jimmy V is an inspiring person.  His attitude towards life, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles is something to admire.

Below is a video clip from the 1993 ESPY awards when he received the Arthur Ashe award for Courage.  During his speech he announces the Jimmy V Foundation.  This is a must see!!!

Below are the highlights from the 1983 National Championship.  It was one of the most exciting endings the tournament has ever seen.

What do you think of Jimmy Valvano, his life and his mission? If I gave you five index cards to write down your goals and dreams for your life, what would you write down?

  1. I had never heard of Jimmy Valvano before this, but he has a very moving story. I thought it was impressive that he tried new things instead of just sticking to what he knew. I also loved that he had goals and followed them, even from a young age. It is really kind of amazing that he died of cancer. So many people die of it yet he was nothing like the other 'so many people'. He had dreams, which became goals, which eventually became reality with a lot of hard work.
One of my biggest goals is going to college. My next goal is getting a job that makes me happy, whether that is what I want to become now, or not. Next, I want to see the world. I want to go everywhere, but especially the non-tourist places. I want to see everything there is to see, if that is really possible. I also want to buy a huge house. I want to buy a house that you could get lost in. It might sound crazy but I love houses and I want one that could always fascinate me. Lastly, I want to live a happy life. I have no clue how I'd measure this, but I want to be on my death bed and have no regrets about my life and not worried about what I did "that time". "In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take."

  2. I have never heard of Jimmy Valvano before, but his life story is very inspirational. I love how he never wanted to be limited to one profession. His life is a great example of all the open-mindset things we are taught at St. Joesph's. I think that he definitely lived his life to the fullest which is something I want to accomplish. His mission to help other people and show people that anything is possible is a lesson that I think is so important everyone should know about it.
When I think about things that I want to and WILL accomplish I think of five things. Th first thing is going to a division one college on a scholarship for lacrosse. I've always wanted to go to college and playing lacrosse there would make the experience even better. The second thing is becoming a professional lacrosse player. This has always been a dream of mine and I think it would be so fun to have that job. The third goal of mine is to become a professional skier. I love to ski and the reason I want to do this is because I can't just play lacrosse. The fourth goal of mine is to make as many good friends as I can in my lifetime. The reason for this is because I want everyone to like me. Last, but not least, I want to die a happy person. The way I can accomplish this is by accomplishing all these goals, once I do I'll will be the happiest man on earth.

  3. I have never heard of Jimmy Valvano before but I think that his life seems really inspiring for people including myself.I like how he would always try to have the fullest life possible which is a good quality to have.I think that this can lead into the Mindfulness things Ms.Porter taught us in class. Not focusing on the future or the past, just the present. I also wonder if he ever learned mindfulness. Maybe he did. He seems like the guy that would. It is sad that he had a great basketball career that ended in a battle against cancer. I wonder if any of his family is still alive today and if they are just like him. I also think that he was a happy, kind and thoughtful man. I wonder if these qualities that he had make people great.

  4. Jimmy Valvano is definitely an inspiration and role model for everyone. About a year ago, my family and I watched his speech. The video made me feel sad, but I could tell he was an amazing person. He wanted to help others overcome cancer, and he never gave up. Jimmy Valvano is very admirable. It is so cool that he wrote down his goals and achieved them all at the age of 36. Jimmy Valvano is someone who I will always look up to.
If I were to write down my goals on index cards they would be: Swim in high school, swim in college, go to an Ivy League school, travel, and to live in a tiny house. I love swimming, and want to do it for as long as I can. I want to go to an Ivy League school, though I am not sure what career I want to pursue. As a family, we have not traveled much, so it is something I really want to do more. Even visiting different states would be fun to do, and very interesting. I definitely want to visit some big cities to see what it's like. I think it would be cool to live in a tiny house. They are so cute and small! Plus, it would be more environmentally friendly and easy to maintain. Then I can probably afford to travel more, too!

  5. About a year ago, during Jimmy V week, my family and I watched his speech, and this was the first time I had heard of him. It was a great speech and it was really touching. I think a great man who helped others overcome cancer. He and his foundation have raised a 100 million dollars in donations to help people fight this disease.
My goals in life are to go to collage and get a degree in engineering, or a degree in a scientific field and play baseball or maybe football. Then, after collage, I want to go to the pros, preferably in baseball. Then I would get a job in what I got a degree in, engineering or in some sort of scientific field. I prefer both play professional baseball and then get a job, but getting the job first would also be fine. I also would like to have kids and grandkids and live in Boise still, or maybe Seattle.

  6. I have never heard of Jimmy V but I believe he would have been an interesting person to hang around with. Just reading about him makes me want to do something with my life. On those 5 notecards I would write
    - Get into a good college and get into medical school
    - become the best basketball player I can be
    - Become a surgeon or pharmacist
    - Change the world some how
    And
    - By example of myself, make others be kind and outgoing

  7. Jimmy Valvano sounds like a person who worked hard to achieve his dreams. He never gave up and eventually achieved every one of his goals, which weren't easy ones. He never wasted a single moment of his life. Most people only have one profession, but he didn't think that was enough. He could try others, so he thought, why not? He didn't want to limit himself.
I have so many goals in life, but I'm only going to name a few.
I want to go into a career that I genuinely enjoy and love. Whether it pays a lot or not. If it's something that I really have fun in and makes me happy, than I should want to do it for free. Payment is just the icing on the cake. I'm not quite sure which profession I want to go into, but I want it to be something that doesn't limit me. Something that lets me be creative.
Next, I want to travel the world. I rarely go on vacations and there's so much out in the world to see. The Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Leaning Tower of Pisa. I want to see them all. I also like to take pictures of things like that, so I might become a photo journalist or something.
I kind of want to get into the Ivy League, but that's a really big goal, so at least I want to go to college.
I want to help those in need. I've seen people sitting or standing on the side of the road begging for food or money. It tears my heart apart. We have enough food to feed everyone, but we waste so much. Not just food either. It's also water, clothes, and much more. We leave the faucet running when we don't need it far too often. You probably aren't going to wear that itchy sweatshirt in the back of your closet, so don't throw it away, donate it. I want to be one of those people who care about others more than I care about myself.
It's hard to find true friends in life. But to have good friends, first you have to be one. S lastly, I want to be the best friend and person in general that I can be. Friends are really important in life. They help you through hard times.

  10. I've never heard of Jimmy but I know from reading this that Jimmy is an inspiring person. He fought cancer and was strong in the inside and out. He's motivating, a great role model, and a leader. I don't really like or care for basketball, so I'm not going to comment on that. Plus, I don't even know the game, so my comments will be bad and you won't understand it. My goals in life
    Are:
    -Getting into Standford
-Getting a 4.0 in high school so I can get into Standford
    -Be a valedictorian
    - Have a job as a pediatrician
    - Getting a Back Handspring

  11. I think Jimmy is a role model everyone should look up to in sports. Now he isn't just a role model for atheletes and coaches. He fought cancer as hard as he could and I loved his story about when he said "focus on three things, Family, Religion, and... The Green Bay Packers" I laughed for a long time. His mission and his life is amazing and how he wanted to be a coach and play college basket ball. He wanted to make every second count.

-Play College Hockey at Notre Dame
-Play pro hockey in the NHL

  15. I have known about Jimmy Valvano for a long time, and I admire his bravery and spirit. He is a role model for everyone, and provides an excellent example of how to appreciate every moment of life. I really admire his ability to see past his cancer, and live every moment to the best of his ability. I want to make myself be more like Jimmy Valvano. If I, like Jimmy Valvano, was to write my five goals of life they would be
    1. Go to college, and graduate with a masters degree.
    2. Have a family and a full time job
    3. Do as best I can to help the people who are in more need than I am
    4. Continue playing basketball for as long as I can
    5. Die of natural causes, with as little regrets as possible
I hope to accomplish all of these things because then I could check them all off and know that I had done all that I intended to in my life. If the world took an example from Jimmy Valvano, it would be a better place.

  16. Jimmy Valvano's speech was very touching. I didn't know who he was before this but that speech really spoke to me. Jimmy had great intentions and they carry on to this day. He changed the world forever and has saved many lives. I think that Jimmy Valvano's Cancer Research foundation is a spectacular foundation. It has given life back to people and their loved ones. If I had five goals in life they would be:

    3. Go to college at Stanford
    4. Become a doctor
    5. Never stop loving my family or keeping in touch with them because they do everything for me and I want to return that gift to them
I could go on and on with this list but these are the top five. I have wanted to do all of these things from a very young age. If I accomplish these things, I believe that my life will be complete. All in all, Jimmy Valvano was a great soul and he lives on in the hearts of those that are of have been afflicted by cancer.

  21. Before this, I didn't know who Jimmy Valvano is or what he did. His mindset and attitude is what we all should aim to be more like. His mindset was one where he was open to most anything that would benefit him and other people. His attitude was one that never gave up until he achieved what he wanted to, something as small as writing down his goals, but also something as big as winning a National Championship for basketball. 44. I have never heard of Jimmy Valvano before, but I think he lived a very inspirational life. I love how he pursued his goals and made sure that they came true. I also like how he tried many things. He didn't want to just stick with one thing. Even though Jimmy faced a tough roadblock, (cancer) he pursued his dreams. I think that the Jimmy Valvano foundation is his greatest achievement.
If I were given 5 notecards to write down my goals, I would write the following-
-Go to a division 1 college in California, such as, Stanford, USD, UCLA.
-Pursue a job that makes me happy.
-Be a great swimmer when I grow up.
    -To have lots of friends.
    -To be a great dad.

-play baseball or basketball in high school, college, and maybe in the pro's.
-get into a good college that offers a sports scholarship.

  46. I was really inspired by what I heard off of this blog and I feel we should all strive to be the best of our ability and I am not saying that cancer is a small obstacle at all and it isn't at all small but he had many hardships through out his life and I am surprised I had never heard his story or even his name.
1.I want to go to college at Oregon because I have loved them since I was a kid and my first word was duck
2.I want to play football in college
3.I want to go to USC for my masters because I would be the 7th generation in my family to go there
4.I want to own or be apart of some big business
5.I also want to be able to drive a Sports car because ever since I was little I would look out the window and see a sports car and I would tell my parents to go as fast and to follow the sports car just so I could look at it and if it had flip up lights it would be a sports car to me
