Travis Rudolph and Bo Paske

In our crazy world it often seems we cannot find those special acts of kindness that demonstrate the exceedingly generous human spirit we each possess. If we watch the news or troll through social media, we all too often witness quite the opposite. Our news is littered with political rants, divisive actions by so-called leaders, and acts of violence committed all over the world.

That is absolutely not the case with the story I am going to share with you.

Earlier this month, football players from Florida State were asked to visit a local middle school in Tallahassee, FL. The players arrived at lunch time and were to mingle with the students. This was the moment that would dramatically change the lives of two individuals and hopefully enlighten and inspire people all over the world.

Travis Rudolph, a junior wide receiver for the Seminoles, entered the lunch room and saw a young boy sitting by himself eating his lunch. That boy was Bo Paske. Unknown to Travis at the time, Bo was diagnosed with Autism many years ago. All Travis knew was that he was alone. Travis approach the table and asked Bo if he could join him. The two sat and enjoyed a conversation and a meal.

The resource officer at the school took a picture of the two and sent the photo to Bo's mother. In addition to being relieved to know today her son was not eating alone, she posted the picture to Facebook. The picture and the story quickly went viral.

The relationship between the two did not stop there. Travis was able to return not too soon after with a jersey for Bo and tickets to last Saturdays game. Travis and Bo have received a significant amount of media coverage from the event, even though ironically that was never the intent.

Below is a follow up story I watched on ESPN. Please take a moment to watch the video.

Why do you think we do not see more news like this in our world today? Should we be?  What lessons do you take away from this story? What can we do to be more aware of others?

  1. I don't think we see this kind of news in our world today because now we know about all of these diseases and we think if we hang out with people like that we may get that disease, or it might seem uncool. Most news stories are full of hate like someone being bullied and doing harm to themselves. Sometimes these nice and heartwarming stories don't take front cover of a newspaper. Not a lot of people care for this type of stuff. A lesson I found was that even a simple act of kindness can change someone forever. I remember when I was at the fair, I said thank you to the man who was running the ride, and he told me that no one had said thank you that day, until now. We can open our eyes and realize what we can do. Even complementing someone who doesn't get talked to much can help. We can change our aspect and views of how we see people and stick up for them now. Nothing will happen if nobody does anything.

  2. I think we do not see more mews stories like this because news reporters and companies like to focus on the bad, sad things because this creates more publicity for them. People want to read that more than other things sometimes and feed off of it. I think that there should be more stories like this because people will be more aware about the kind things that they can do and will maybe be inspired to take action. The lessons I take away from this story are that you should never judge others and you should always be the person that offers a helping hand. We can be more aware of others by looking at everyone equally because you never know what else is going on in their life. We can try to be the person that offers a smile and is kind instead of being mean and cruel to others.

  3. I think that we don't see this often because often the news is focused on the bad stuff and not the good stuff. But I still think we should see more of this on the news because random acts of kindness can lead to more acts of random kindness. What I take away from this is that we should always try to be kind no matter what.To make this more aware to others we should try to tell other people to be kind no matter what the problem is.

  4. I think we should see more of these stories on the news. Something that I took from this story is that the little things in life can make a HUGE difference in one persons life. It doesnt matter big, small, popular, not popular. One little thing can change a life forever. The call to action to me is to go and sit with people who dont have a lot of friends and try and help them make friends or give them so advice on how to make friends, that is why I want to be a peace leader.

  5. I think we don't see more news stories because the news focuses on things that are bad and sad because more people seem to want to see it. We should see more of this kind of news because people need to hear stories like this one to be inspired and to be hopeful in the world that has many bad things that happen. The lesson that I learn from this is to be caring to those who need it most and doing small acts of kindness will go a long way. We need to be non oblivious by paying attention to people who sit alone at lunch, recess, and maybe are sad or hurt. We need to work on being compassionate not judging toward others.

  6. I think that we don't see this in the news often enough because it doesn't happen often enough. I think this should be the only thing on our news and everyone should be doing it! Everyone is always talking about how we need world peace and how ISIS is so bad, but people my age can't do anything to make the whole world peaceful or to stop ISIS! But, you can make your school peaceful, your home peaceful. The world will never be peaceful if you can't even be nice to your siblings, or if you can't be nice to that person who is sitting alone at lunch. What's the point of promoting world peace if your not going to be nice to the person who most needs it and the person who might not deserve it. To be more aware of people just think before you say something and people think differently so what might not be offensive to you could be offensive to them. And if you think saying "no offence" will help if it was kind of offensive it doesn't especially if you knew it might be offensive. And the fact that someone has autism or a condition like that doesn't make them any different from anyone else in the world. I think we should be kind to everyone no matter if we want to or not, or if we think they deserve it or not we should be kind to everyone in the world. NO MATTER WHAT.

  7. I don't think we see much news like this today, because we've become more selfish and don't pay attention to others as much as we should. I think we should see it a lot more. A lesson that I learned was that if you do one nice thing, even if it doesn't seem like much. It can impact that person's life greatly. To be more aware of others, we could try to do nice things daily and try to change the way we look at others.

  8. I don't think we see as much of this on the news because, people like to focus on the bad, we all think that the world is a terrible place, so the people like to focus on the bad news, we end up forgetting that the world is a good place too. I think we should see more news like this, then the people of the world would see that is really is a good place. The lesson we should take away from this is that just one kind deed can change someone's life, so you should always be doing kind deeds and be the best person you can be. Just eating lunch with a lonely boy who has autism, has changed the boy's life and really made a positive impact in his and his mom's lives. To be more aware of others, just always keep an eye out for that lonely person, and offer a kind deed for them or anyone who needs it.

  9. I think that we don't see very many positive things on the news because they like to focus on the bad. Maybe the news reporters think that bad news is more entertaining so it'll make more people watch. I think they should put more happy stories on the news, nobody likes hearing about a shooting but almost everyone likes hearing a story about a football player making a boy with autism feel good. This story shows how simply sitting with someone at lunch can make their day a whole lot better. Everyone should try to do little acts of kindness every day. You never know what might be going on in another persons life.

  10. I don't think we see much news like this because the news reporters like to focus on the bad things like Isis. Or they focus on politics like the presidential election. I think they do this because People enjoy seeing the bad things more than the good things. In my opinion I think that we should see more stories like this because it brings out the good in people. I know there are much more stories like this one and I would enjoy seeing more like it. The lesson that I learned from this is to try my best not to judge others. I know that it can be hard not to sometimes, but I think we can do it. I think that we should see people for who they really are.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't think that we see to many nice stories in the news anymore. There used to be good and bad stories in the news and now they try to make us scared and afraid. Telling stories about ISIS and murders all around the globe. I think they should be telling people good stories about those people in the world who are kind and love one another. Some lessons that I think we should learn from this story is that we should be nice to everyone no matter they look like or is diagnosed with. I think that it was extremely nice for that football player to sit with that kid. I think we could be more aware of others and their life. If someone is having a bad day lift them up. If someone is mad at someone help them solve the conflict. I think that was a very kind act and we should take his example and be kind to others.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think that we do not see much news like this, on national television because our world is in such a state where it seems like they want to focus on more bad than good. They try to focus on the candidates and what they did wrong, or on ISIS attacks. I mean, don't get me wrong, ISIS is bad, but instead of only focusing on ISIS they need to report things like this, in my opinion. Some lessons we can take away from this story, is to always be inviting and inclusive. We can also learn that just a lunch invite can make a kids week, let alone day. We can always watch out for kids who look like they are having a tough day. We can also be inclusive always. If you ever see anyone hanging out alone or eating alone, you know that you should automatically go sit with them, or invite them to sit with you.

    ReplyDelete
  13. People in this world are just mean and don't care about anybody. They see people alone they just leave them. I remember I saw a kid alone at lunch so I got up from my table and sat with him. If you see some one alone sit with them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't know why we don't see more of this kind of stuff. It's really good to look at, and I think it's inspirational. We should be the school that does things like that. Then other schools will follow our example and do things like that, then soon, we've got maybe half the city doing nice thing to other people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why I think we don't see these things is because what really grabs attention is bad events thats why most news broadcasts show bad things. I feel we should see more of this because we can't always be concentrating on the negative and isn't cool to see these things. What I took from this was that random acts of kindness are not so random because that one act changed is life for the better and if you just do one simple thing then it can have a huge impact. We can go online and see these thing for ourselves like youtube or just going online to the news section and typing "good or happy" news.

  16. I don't think that we see this kind of news often today. Most of the time the news is about either the weather or the violence or an update on celebrities today. The lesson that I learned from this video is that we can always try to help someone. We also need to never judge someone and instead go find out who they are and then they can become friends and have a very special relationship. We can also be more aware of others we can do this by not who is the best at whatever but by focusing on finding a new friend.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I feel like we don't see a lot of this kindness because of the reporters and journalists. They know that we are more likely to watch their newscast if there's violence on it, because in this day and age, we are less affected by violence and we are more drawn to violence today then we were about 5 decades ago.

The lesson that I took away from this is that such a small act of kindness from anyone can go such a long way, an in some ways, change someone's life. If we can stop thinking of what people think of us and what the consequences are for doing the right thing, the difference would be so dramatic. If everyone in Boise was 100% more positive, imagine how much nicer our lives would be. But all it takes, is one small act of kindness

    ReplyDelete
  18. Because there is more violence in the world. We should see more of this kindness promotion. I think that we can all learn that kindness goes way farther. WE can learn not to treat anyone else differently.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree that we do not see very many inspirational and happy stories as we do violent stories. This was inspirational but I don't think that many people would be intrigued by this kind of stories. Also, so many kind things go unrecognized. Some of the lessons that I learned from this is that we should always try to be kind to others even if there is nobody watching. You don't need to be praised for every nice thing that you do. We should stop thinking only of ourselves and look around for others that may be struggling and in need of help.

    ReplyDelete
  20. We don't really see more news like this throughout the world because there is a lot of violence, war, and arguments going on. I think we should be seeing more of this and not just focusing on the bad stuff in the news. Even though it might not be intriguing, it would warm peoples hearts to see good in the world. We should always be kind, even thought we may not even know that person. Sometimes it can go a long way. To be more aware of others, we should not focus on us or our close friends all the time. We should be positive and go out of our way to do something.

    ReplyDelete
  21. A lot of people don't see news like this in the world that much, news usually only focuses on bad stuff like violence and arguments in the world. They make it seem as if there is no good in the world, but there is! People causally think that you have to do very big things to change the world. But really if you do small things they can grow to big things. We should all just get out there and get our hands dirty on whatever we can do in the world instead of playing video games and not focusing about what we can and can't do, and do it.

  22. I feel that in this world and press and T.V, We mostly see attacks or political unjustices and many more terrible things. People say that there is less nice and happy things that happens in this world and I feel that's just not true hundreds and hundreds or nice acts of kindness happen everyday and it might not be a huge deal to the media or the world but to that small community that it affected it makes a huge impact! After reading this I can see that it take just a few minutes to get to know someone and do something after that and when that happens there can be a life long friendships.

  24. I think we don't see a lot of stories like this one in our news today because viewers have showed journalists and reporters that they would rather hear the sad stories. It may be because people would rather hear about sudden disaster than slow improvement, or something sad makes for a simpler story. Also, I think that our society tends to focus on more negative things, and their tends to be more violence in the world than possotivity. I think it would largely benefit us to be a little more positive, but we also need to be informed on the bad things happening in our country, like the terrorist attacks in New York on Saturday, even if we don't want to hear sad things.
From this story, I think I learned that someone can always try to help another person, which in this case, changed Bo's life. We also should try to look past something we might not like or think is different about a person.

    ReplyDelete
  25. there is lots of war , crime , and violence going on and the media reports on it because it gives them better ratings and views. we should see more of this because we don't need all the negativity that the news is showing to us and they should show more stories of kindness. what i took away is that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and be nice to the people that you don't know or don't like. how we can be more aware is by doing more kind deeds and go scope out the people that are having a hard time and help them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't think that news like this is shown because we are so caught up in all the bad that is happening in the world we don't get a chance to see the good. For example, right now there is a huge election coming up. Everyone in the country is so focused on the election that they don't see anything else that is happening. Also, the terrorists that have been bombing cites all over the world have been making people so frenzied about the bad that it has taken away the fact that there is a lot of good in the world.
I think that we for sure need to put more positivity into our news. Without this all we know about our world is that it is cruel and mean. It is not all cruel and mean. There are people out that want to make a difference and inspire people to be the best people they can be.
From this story, I learned that even something small can impact someone so much. Even just helping a little kid tie their shoes, or just what Travis Rudolph did, sit with someone that is alone at lunch can make so much of a difference and piece by piece its going to make a big difference in the world.
We should try to include people that look alone, try to always stay positive towards other people and things, or just being compassionate and kind towards others. Also, look outside of who you usually hang out with and find new friends. This could make someones day or start a new friendship that could last until your very old. I think if we all pitch in to be a little kinder, a little more compassionate, Travis Rudolph's and Bo Paske's story can happen all over the world. Then, the world will be a better, happier place.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think we see news like this so often because there are so many acts of kindness that happen in any given day.Because these acts of kindness are so common, they don't make news. So it’s the bad stuff that happens less that makes news.I think that we should show this good news more because it makes you feel better about the world we live in. We can learn that one small act of kindness can change the a person's world for the better.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I dont think we see this type of good news anymore because everyone in the world is focusing on the negitive stuff in the word and not nice happy things that can change peoples lives. Ive learned that even the smallest acts of kindness like siting with a person at a lunch table and talking can change a persons life for the best. Everyone should focus on the good stuff in the world instead of thinking of bad things. We should start seeing stuff like this more often because it makes people feel good and people happy

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think we see this type of situation in our world as often because kids with these disease act different, talk different, and look different and us hanging out with them makes us look weird or un cool. Our world is aware of these diseases but don't realize how the kids feel with the actual disease. We focus to much on the bad and not the good. We should be treating theses people like their another one of us and no different, and if others are disrespectful, then you need to show kindness and step up for them.
We can take away many things from this story, some are we need to respect these people and treat them with kindness even though they might be different. We should focus on the little things in life that makes us united. We can be more aware by if we see these people being treated badly we can stand up for them or aware others of the horrible treatment. Treat others how you would want to be treated.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The world is so focused on negative things instead of positive things because news channels with negative segments get more press. Unfortunately people lose interest in the positive things and focus on the negative things. I definitely think we should have more positive things on the news. Our world is filled with a lot of hate and to see the brighter things is definitely important. A lesson I take away from this story is to always be nice and kind to people if they have mental problems. Especially if they are as sweet and nice as the kid in the story. I think we can be more aware of others by not having any snap judgements about people. What I mean by this is we focus on the things that are wrong with a person and that blinds us to see who they really are.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think one of the reasons we don't see this in most of our news is because more people would rather hear about something controversial more than this. I think if stuff like this was on our news more often, people would be kinder. A lesson I can take away from this story is that doing something small, like sitting next to someone in a cafeteria, can end up having a bigger impact then what would be expected. We can always try to look around for others on a daily basis.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that we don't always see more news stories like this because in our society we tend to always think negatively or only on the bad things in life not the good things. I personally think that it is always a good idea to watch news about what is good in our lives and what makes us happy but I also believe that we should always be informed about the bad stuff as well. Lessons that can be taken away from this would be that being kind and helpful isn't as hard as we sometimes like to imagine. In fact it can be as easy as just saying hi or in this case sitting down with someone that you don't even know. One thing that we can do to become more aware is to be more socially active within your community. Weather it is volunteering at homeless shelter to even taking to a new neighbor that just moved in. All of these things can help to make a better, more involved community.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think that in our day and age, people tend to wan't to know the bad, not the good, because people look at things more negatively. This is why we don't see a whole lot of news on what is good and more on bad. I believe it is very important to see good news and not all the bad news because that way we still know that the world is filled with good not just recluse hate or despair. These are a few things I learned from the video along with, how the smallest act of kindness goes a long way, and how we showed always be looking for that little act of kindness. I believe that one thing we can do to be more aware is be more active in our community, weather through service to the pore, trash and nature pickup, even having social gatherings your neighborhood so people can talk and let loose a little. These can help us to be even more aware in our community.

    ReplyDelete
  34. We do not see these kind of stories in our day to day lives because of so much negativity and darkness we never get to see the light in our lives. People tend to only want to know about things that they think could affect them. An example of this is some people only care about an incident or tragedy that could put them in danger or harm them. We need to be realizing that an act of kindness can affect us. It will enlighten our day and make us want to do something good. This story taught me that a simple and small act of kindness can help anyone even if you weren't even trying to. At this moment in the world we can be aware of others by reading the news or watching it and by communicating with others. We all can help the world become a better place by doing small yet effective acts of kindness like Travis Rudolph.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't see things like this in the news because people I think have gotten used to seeing things in the past. People have gotten used to seeing this type of thing on the news with the negativity and sadness. I think that we should see things like this to remind us what some kids are going through and we need to see that we have things that we should be thankful for what we have. A lesson that I took away from this story is that I should see things in a bigger perspective and that I could do something really little and it could mean a lot to the person that I did it to. What we could do to be more aware of others is we could try and talk to new people and find out what their back story is and learn what they like and what they have been through and be careful what you say around them and make sure that you do not make them feel bad if you say something wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think we don't see more news like this because people want to show and know what wars are going on and depressing topics. Instead of acts of kindness and learning things we can go to become a better person. I think we should be showing more acts of kindness because it shows our community what we can do better and how we can make everyone feel welcome. If we show small acts of kindness on the news is would encourage more people to do it. Whenever I see someone sitting alone or being down this article encouraged me to go up to them and make them smile. To be more aware of others we can try talking to everyone in our society instead of one group or instead of being down on someone pick them up and make them feel better. We can also be more welcoming and careful about what we say and do to others.

  38. I think people in the news now they want to focus on the bad and terrible things that go on in our world because it gives them more publicity and attention. A lesson that I take away from this story is that we need to go to curious and not focus on the bad in the world and find the good in things. We can try to be more aware of others by trying to say thank you to others around us and try to do random acts of kindness like holding the door for someone or helping them if they drop something.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that at this point people are mor concerned about the bad things like bombing, terrism, and deaths. People don't tend to care about two boys at school being friends. A lesson that I learned for this story is that we should be kind to ither peogole. If we see someone who is sad or alone at school, we should go over to them and be nice to them. We can try and be more aware of others by not focusing on ourselves. We shouldn't hang out with the same people each day. We should be with other people, not exclude them for stuff, and be open to new people.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think the reason that there are not a lot of stories like this on the news is because when people hear the news they think that there is going to be just bad news and not good news. The news want to inform you on what you think your going to hear and what you want to hear. I think we should hear this more often on the news because when one person is making a difference and that person is famous or not that when people see that that they're going to start wanting to be nice to other people to. The lesson that I learned is that if you help or even talk to someone that you see that is always lonely or if you see that someone is by himself/herself then go say hi because in you world it probably won't make a big difference but in their world it could make a huge difference in their life. What I can do is when you see someone with there head down or nobody is talking to him/her. then you should go say hello and try to make conversation and maybe that will change their lives just a little bit that day.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think the reason why we don't hear news like this is because people like to focus more on the bad news or concerns with our world instead of watching heartwarming things that can change your perspective on certain things. I definitely think we should either to feel good or to see what good people are out there and what we can learn from them. What we can learn from this story is to reach out to people who are lonely and to not be afraid to! We never know others story until we get to know them. So much as sitting with them at lunch can mean the world to them. We should be more aware of others because we never know what people have been through so being kind to them is a great thing. This story opens my eyes and wants me to do more to help and be kind to others whether I know them or not.

  42. The reason we don't see news like this is because people focus on all the bad things going on and they think that is what the news should be about. I think we should see more good news because there is a lot of good things that happen, there are bad things too but why should we focus on that. I think this story is very powerful and touching. This football player thinks he didn't really do anything he just sat with a kid but to Travis it changed his life. To be more aware of others we can not just focus on ourselves we can try to nice to someone that is sad and you might not change there life but you might change there day.

  43. I think the reason we don’t see news anymore like this is because there is a lot of war, violence, hate, and arguments going on. I think we should be seeing a lot more news like this because it is so heartwarming and it is so great to hear news stories like this. Lessons that I take away from this is to be nice to everyone no matter what and to not judge someone on the outside but on the inside. Something we can do to be more aware of others is to not judge anyone on how they look or what they seem like.

  44. I think we don't see many stories like this because bad stories tend to gain publicity. There are so many bad things happening, people forget about the good things, like random acts of kindness. We should be showing more of these stories because they can inspire people. I don't know about anyone else who saw this, but this story has inspired me to be even more kind than I was before. We can learn lessons like, just because someone is different, doesn't mean that the should be treated differently. This was a very heartwarming story and I always like hearing inspiring and heartwarming stories like these

  45. I don't think that news like this is shown because we are so caught up in all the bad that is happening in the world we don't get a chance to see the good. We should be showing more of these stories because they can inspire people. We can learn lessons from these stories. This was a very heartwarming story and inspiring. You don’t know if someone is having a bad day unless you talk to them. Giving just a smile to someone can make their day a lot better.

  46. I don't think we see this news everyday because it doesn't happen all the time. It is one of those special things because when it happens it inspires many other people to do acts of kindness to other people! The lesson I take away from this story is that I now know that if I see someone sitting alone somewhere I should see if they are o.k. and if they want to talk, so basically give them a friend. To be more aware of others we can always be looking out for people in need of a friend.

  47. We do not hear about this type of news these days because most don't go out of their way to help others and do random acts of kindness. Most people don't do this because they don't want to go out of their way to help others and because they want to stay within their comfort zone. When somebody does this, it makes others happy and is very inspirational. This should be in the news more to raise awareness about being nice to others. Instead of being forced on children or even adults, kindness should be an example and a choice. Kids like to do stuff on their own accord and if they do it be themselves, they will take away a feeling of joy and excitement for doing it on their own. This will encourage them to do random acts of kindness more. The lesson I take from this story is to go out of your own circle of friends and venture out of your comfort zone. In doing this, you will feel better about yourself and want to help others just because. We should spread awareness about this random act of kindness, but not force it down people's throats.

  48. We do not see this type of news because people want to know what is going on in our world and usually it is bad things. There should be more news like this because we need some good news and not all bad news. A lesson that we can take away from this is that we should not only worry about our self. We should also be aware of others too.

  49. I think that we do not see more news like this because things like this don't happen as often as they should. We should be showing acts of kindness more often like Travis Rudolph did. We can change peoples lives by just simply sitting with them at lunch if no one is sitting with them or just give someone a compliment if you can tell they are down. In our world today it is very upsetting to see people that tease or bully people it is unnecessary and we should do something about it. From Learning about this story it influenced me to try to be kind to everyone and respect everyone. If you don't have something nice to say then don't say it. I believe that if we always are uplifting to other people it would cause us to have more peaceful life.
