September 28 is a Confucian Holiday celebrating the birth of Confucius. It is also celebrated as Teachers' Day. While many confuse Confucius ism with a religion, it is actually more of a philosophy. Confucius was not a priest or a deity, he was a teacher.
Confucius was born around 551 BC in the small state of Lu. He was born into an aristocratic family, although there is debate as to whether he had any money or not. During his life he served many influential people and his teachings became not only fundamental to Confucian philosophy, but to the general Chinese philosophy.
The 6th century BC China was a bad time politically and socially in China. Leaders had lost their way. There was a greater emphasis on the people serving the leader instead of being there to support the people and grow a strong community. Ethics and integrity meant little to the leaders of the time. Confucius was disgusted by this development. At the time, he was a widely unknown teacher. He attempted to revive society by re-introducing the great moral teachings of the past.
At the cornerstone of his teachings was the belief that ethical considerations should be the guiding principle of government. He did not accept the idea of a strict legal system. He believed the primary task of a ruler was to promote the welfare and happiness of the people. The ruler should be a role model, his behavior should be better than everyone else. The leader’s strong ethical behaviors would influence the people's behaviors. Customs and voluntary adherence would be the best way to achieve and maintain an orderly society. Furthermore, he believed leadership should be given to the educated, not the noble.
Confucius never wrote many of the quotations we see today. After his death, many of his disciples gathered and compiled his teachings. Here are a few quotations:
"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves."
"Forget injuries, never forget kindness."
"He who will not economize will have to agonize."
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."
"Respect yourself and others will respect you."
Throughout history, we have seen many teachers influence the world. Jesus, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Buddha, and Confucius have significantly changed the world and redefined the way many of us view right from wrong.
Who are the teachers in your life that have influenced you the most and how have they influenced you? What life lesson have you gathered from an effective and influential teacher? What is the wisest or most influential quote you have ever heard from a teacher?

I know this will seem like I am just sweet talking you Mr. Grant, but I'd say that you are the teacher who has influenced me the most. Ever since I was little, my siblings were talking to me about how great your class is. I was so excited to have you as a teacher. When I got into middle school, I figured out just how amazing your class is. It met and exceeded all of the scenarios I was able to conjure up in my imagination. I have learned so much in your class, and I have gained a better understanding of the world. You have helped my views grow and develop. Your class has been and continues to be great. It is the best part of my day almost every single day. Some life lessons I have learned from your class are things like, "SLANT" this technique has helped me in all of my classes and I will continue to use it, hopefully forever. Another lesson I have learned is that you should always be passionate about what you do. Be confident and show a sense of pride about what you do. One more is that you should always be respectful. Trying your best is important and so are many other things, but one of the most important lessons in life is respect. You should always be respectful no matter what the circumstances, and you will go far. Probably the wisest or most influential quote I have gotten form your class is"I hope you all will come back here in 10 years and be able to tell me something you remember from my class, because that shows that I got that knowledge into your brains for good, and that you got something out of my class"-Mr. Grant. I think this is really influential because it shows that unlike teachers in some places, you really care about helping us move forward in life, and you really care about teaching us well.
ReplyDeleteThe teachers in my life that have influenced me are numerous. My second and third grade teacher influenced me greatly. My middle school teachers (all of them) have influenced me in a variety of ways. They have influenced me on how to be bold, creative, and proud. They all have helped me over come fears and become who I am. My teachers all have helped me learn many life lessons, like how to study and how to behave well. The most wise quote is a smooth sea never made a skillful sailor
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me the most is Mr.Maxwell because as you probably know he is my uncle. I love his class and I look up to him on how to do things and get things done. I was so excited to have him as my teacher in sixth grade and the rest of middle school. A life lesson that I've learned from him is that you can always be yourself and you need to find your voice in your writing and in speaking in general. You can not be afraid to speak up and have a voice in something. The most helpful quote that I've heard from him is "You have to know yourself and know your worth." I think that it means a lot and it is true because if you don't know you worth or your self than you don't know what your abilities are. You might be good at one thing and bad at other things. You have to know if you're bad at something so that you can get better at everything that you are bad at and learn how to get better at it.
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that have influenced me the most are pretty much all of them. They've each taught me very helpful techniques and have all taught me so much. All the teachers have had a huge impact on my life and have helped me so much. Some life lessons I've learned are that whether you know it or not, teachers are part of the reason you are who your are. I mean surely your friends and family helped shaped you, but if you had a mean teacher, wouldn't that affect your self-esteem? The most influential quote I've heard from a teacher is "We don't see people how they are, we see them as we are." This means that we judge someone before we actually meet them, it just reflects what kind of person we are.
ReplyDeleteI love your quote. I reflect on this idea often.
DeleteThe most influential teacher I have had was probably Mrs.Russel and Mr.Grant.For years I had wondered about what happened in middle school.I found that the most interesting was Mr.Grant and Mrs.Russel because I had heard that their classes were the best because they were interactive and interesting and fun.I gathered, when I finally got to middle school, that indeed all these things were true, that you to put a little fun in everything you do.Even at work, school, and at home. That was the lesson that taught me to not try to goof off in every class but to just put a little fun in every thing I do for me and other people around me in class. The most influential quote I've heard from them was probably"If you struggle move on.There is always time to come back to it." That is what inspired me to if I get perplexed to just move on and come back to it because I have time after I finish or after school. That to me is the most important lesson of all that a teacher can teach to someone at school, home, sports, and any other place that you have in mind."Just let it go"also helped me a lot because to me I used to worry about every little detail(kinda still do)but then when I started hearing that i just figured I should move on I f something happens it's the past it cannot be changed.
ReplyDeleteAll of my middle school teachers have influenced me a lot. Mrs. McClure has influenced me probably the most because she teaches me to always work hard. I learn a lot in her class about science, but also about learning from your mistakes and becoming better from that. The life lesson I learned is that you will face challenges, and won't always succeed, but can always learn. Another teacher of mine is my swim coach. From her I have learned that one of the best ways to succeed is simply to have fun and relax. The best quote I have learned from my swim coach is "Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better." -Pat Riley
ReplyDeleteMany, many people influence me in my life. My family is also included in this group. The overall lesson I have learned is to always be thankful for what you have, because you might look back one day and wish to be in the position you were in then.
My sister and my mom have influenced my life a lot. My sister has set a good example for me when I need it the most. She makes me be more responsible. she also makes me not procrastinate on things like homework and studying for tests. My sister has taught me to not worry about the past and move in the future. " let's relax together so we don't get to stressed out with homework"-Kylee.
ReplyDeleteMr. Grant because he shows me that you just be yourself where ever and when ever. Mr. Maxwell because he shows me to never give up always try your best. From my elective I learned that when I make just continue on with your life. When you have work, don't wait just get it done!!!
ReplyDeleteMy biological dad has shaped me to be who I am today. He made a lot of mistakes in his life and I've learned what not to do. He also taught me how to use self defense and become a better friend. A lesson that I learned from my dad is to never procrastinate. In his life he procrastinated a lot and it got him fired and he dropped out of school. I can procrastinate at times when I'm tired or angry and then my grades and my friendships go downhill. My dad even sat me down and said "don't do what I did, don't drop out of school, and don't wait till the last second to make things happen." The most most inspirational quote I've ever heard him say was "I have made many mistakes in my life,I don't want you to make those mistakes." My dad has been a strange teacher in my life, but he made me a better person my teaching me not to do what he has done.
ReplyDeleteI know that he technically didn't go to college and get his teaching degree, but the teacher that has most influenced my life is my dad. My dad has taught me more than any teacher ever could, and has helped me become the best person I can. My dad has taught me how to be a good student, how to be a good citizen, and how to be a good person throughout my life. He has also taught me how to overcome obstacles and stay strong. The best quote my dad has told me is "Failing to plan is planning to fail", but I also really liked "If you cant get through the door, tear down the wall."
ReplyDeleteMy most influencing teachers are probably Mrs. Russell and you Mr. Grant. Mrs. Russell has taught me the ways of life and how to fix problems I run into involving mathematics. I have learned so much over the past 1 1/2 years of having her as a teachers it's incredible. She always encourages me to do better and always try my hardest. I'll always remember to measure twice and cut once, especially in her class.
ReplyDeleteMr. Grant, you have taught me the basic unit of society and how our world works. It's been everything from Machupichu to New York City and 911. You have explained to me how our government works, economy works, and how our politics work in such a creative way so that we remember it. I will always remember culture. (shared values, behaviors, and knowledge
My most influencing teacher is probably Mrs. McClure, Mr. Grant, and Mrs. Gamboa. Mrs. McClure has taught me that sometimes our homework/quizzes/test's answers are sometimes unreasonable. She tells us to think before we write something. She also tells us you always have to go the "scientific" way. Mr. Grant has taught me how to view other cultures with curiosity and respect, instead of making fun of them. He has also taught me mostly everything I know about the world today using notes and actually speaking. In the younger grades, we didn't really do any S.S. (except for 5th Grade). Mrs. Gamboa has shown me how the writing process works, and how to make your writing better and more clear. She has also taught me a bunch of vocab words, that I've never even heard of. A life lesson I gathered from Mr. Maxwell is for your first draft, write from your heart, then the next draft, write from your brain. The best quote I've ever heard is "It isn't the length of the stick, it's the magic in the wand." I think this means it doesn't matter where you came from or what you look like, but it's what you do to help your community and your special quirks.
ReplyDeleteThe most influencing teacher is Mrs. Russell. Why she is the most influencing is she taught us that you shouldn't be caring just about the grade and you should care about getting better she has also helped me get better at math. What life lesson I have learned is don't give up and keep going to achieve your goals. The wisest or most influential quote i have heard is Why do it tomorrow when you can do it today it really connects to me because i am a procrastinator and i put off things a lot.
ReplyDeleteI have to say my most influential teachers were all my middle school teachers. They all have taught me many important things. Mr Maxwell and Mrs. Gamboa have taught me how to go through the writing process and make our writing a lot better. Mrs. McClure has taught us to think scientifically and how to form a hypothesis. Mr Yanci has taught us many things about religion and how to write a good reflective journal entry. Mrs. Russell has taught us so many things about math, and told us so many formulas that make the problems so much easier. Mr. Grant has given us so many useful tips and quotes like S.L.A.N.T, Avoid the 3 bad questions, and Do NOT Ask Google Questions!! He has really turned my favorite subject,Social Studies, and turned into something better. Mrs. Governale has taught us so many things about avoiding conflict, and it sometimes helps me a lot when I am about to get in a conflict. All these teachers are wonderful and I am glad they are here to teach all these lessons
ReplyDeleteSome of the teachers in my life are as follows: Mr.Yanci, Mrs. Gamboa, Mr.Maxwell, Mrs. Governale, Mrs.Mclure,etc. They have touched my life because they help my manners. I have learned that sometimes "people can be total idiots"-From my dad. "Love as if you would die for them."-Mrs. Texara All saints Maine
ReplyDeleteMr. Grant and Mrs.G have been the most influecial teachers in my life. They have my favorite subjucts in school, P.E. and social studies, and then they have influenced me in the way of the fact that they make some already fun but serious subjects very funny and even more fun.
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that influenced me the most is Mr.Grant and Mrs. McClure. Mr. Grant has influenced me by giving me a better understanding of different cultures. He has also given us many helpful tips like don't use Wikipedia, use S.L.A.N.T, and avoid the three bad questions. The lesson I've learned from Mr. Grant is don't judge other cultures, think about what it was like during that time. Mrs. McClure has taught me to work hard and has us work hard in studying for her test. The lesson I learned from her was if you do a bad job on a test or homework than don't cry about it, work harder on it next time. The best quote I've heard was from my old swim coach and it was " don't give up before you try just try and if it fails than try again".
ReplyDeleteThe most influential teacher in my lifetime is Mrs. Russell. I feel that she has made me a harder working and more productive middle school student. She has taught me about having a growth mindset and having a positive viewpoint of things. One of the life lessons that I have learned from her is to always do your best. The most influential quote that I have heard her say is, "A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor." This means that when the going gets tough, you are only going to get better.
ReplyDeleteThe most influencial teacher is Mr. Grant because you taught how do to do good in class (slant) and you always execept more from us because you know and we know that we can do it but, we dont want to. I always look forward to your class and you try to make your class fun and enterntaining in a way, and yu always succeed.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me most is Mr. Maxwell. He has influenced me by helping me to write better, including essays, short responses and detailed paragraphs. One lesson he has given me is to work until something is finished. You can say that it is done, but you may have not completed it, rather, you may have just said or thought you did it. Mr. Grant has also helped me with posture because he taught us "SLANT". One influential quote I have heard from a teacher in my life is "Don't just do it. Strive for it." This means that you should take extra measures to do your best in everything.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me the most is Mrs. Russell. Mrs. Russell has taught me to work harder at math and in life. She has taught me many tips on how to do better in middle school and beyond. She had me realize that I was better at math than I gave myself credit for. She always tells us what we need to know. The most influential quote I have heard from her was "If you can't figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose."
ReplyDeleteI have had many teachers that have influenced me. I don't have a single teacher that has influenced me greatly because all of them have. From my kindergarten teachers that taught me the fundamentals of education to my all of my middle school teachers now. Every single one of my teachers are unique and have influenced me greatly. All of my teachers have always pushed me to be a little bit better, to work a little bit harder, and to try my best in everything that I do. I have learned from them that you should work hard and do the the best you can. "If your struggling, it's O.K., skip it and come back to it"- Mrs. Russell. Usually, this quote is meant for a test, but it can also mean something else. I always get stuck on things. Like a question I can't figure out on my math homework, stress that I'm dealing with, or other things. This quote makes me think that its O.K. to stop for a second, do something else, and then go back to it because if you don't you'll never get anything done.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has probably influenced me the most is Mrs. Russell. Mrs.Russell has taught me to work hard and to always do my best even if I am struggling. She has also given the class tips in the 6th grade of how to do great in middle school. Mrs. Russell helped me realize how great I was at math even though in the fourth grade I was challenged in math. One quote that Mrs.Russell has at the end of some of her emails is " A smoothe sea never made a skillful sailor."
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me the most is Mr. Grant. The way he teaches makes me interested in the subjects he is talking about. The most important life lesson he has taught me is SLANT.
ReplyDeleteThe wisest quote I have heard from a teacher is "treat others how you want to be treated".
The Teacher that has influenced me is evenly tied between Mrs. Watanabe and Mrs. Seidler. They taught me the importance of following rules, learning, and forgiving others. Both of those teachers helped me through a hard time in my life, and were very caring and forgiving. The wisest thing I have heard a teacher say is " Do your best and everything else will be taken care of."
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that have influenced me the most is probably Mrs. G. She taught me that life is to short to focus on the negative in life. She never raises her voice at all, she shows us how to show respect to someone and how to see the good in every living thing. I take her teachings and will use them for the rest of my life. "Experts were once beginners." Is the most inspirational quote I have heard from a teacher.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me greatly is Mrs G. She has taught me that whenever things have gone bad or if it's just total chaos that's going on, to put all my trust into Jesus. She is very nice, peaceful, understanding, and extremely approachable. She has helped me put things in perspective, like how much things really matter and how we shouldn't worry because you won't remember it anyways. "Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its troubles, it empties today of its strength." - Corrie Ten Boom
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that have influenced me the most are Ms. Walter who taught me the importance of taking notes and gave me a better understanding of our state Idaho. The other teacher is Mrs.Russel who helped me to understand better. Before I came to middle school I struggled with Math but she helped me to understand it better. Now math is one of my stronger skills at school. What I have learned from all of my teachers is to work hard and do your best and with that I can succeed The best quote a teacher has ever given me is that if I do my best and fail I should still be proud of my effort.
ReplyDeleteThe most influential teacher in my life has been my Father. My Dad of course has been with me since I was born so he has been a great role-model for me for as long as I can remember. I look up to my Dad because he has been very successful in life and that does not always mean making a lot of money. He has made incredible relationships with more people than I can even think about. He has also shaped me as a person and given me the qualities I love and sometimes hate. A leader I have gotten a life lesson from is my lacrosse coach Mr. Morrison. He taught me that you don't always have to be the best at everything, but that you should try everything instead. I really enjoy having him coach me because he teaches me many important hints and tips of life. One quote that has really inspired me came from one of my friends surprisingly enough. He told me, "Behind every great goalie is an empty net". This quote has inspired me to realize that I can do anything because it doesn't matter how good I am or anybody else it just matters that I show up and try. One other quote I have heard from Mr. Grant is,"Ninety percent of success is showing up". I absolutely adore this quote because it has taught me that I can't chicken out of situation because if I do I won't learn anything.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has most influenced me is my mom. She has taught me to do everything from how to tie my shoe to how to write. She has helped me learn right from wrong and taught me how to coexist with others without fights. My favorite quote from my favorite teacher is "If you don't succeed at first try, try again".
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that have influenced me are Mrs. Joy. She really taught me to study hard and to connect textual information and be able to answer a question that can be answered but not with the strait tex or facts. I have also gathered a few life lessons from her such as the amount you study or the amount of effort you put in you receive, and that the most common wall or challenge comes from yourself. One quote I have heard from a teacher was in forth grade by Mrs. Walter, "Falling to prepare, is preparing to fail"! This has stayed with me to this day and I will never forget it.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has probably influenced me most is Mr. Grant. He influenced me by teaching me in a way that it is fun but interesting at the same time. He always finds a way to put funny jokes into what he teaches. The important life lesson that he has taught me is that learning always sounds like the most boring thing in the world, but there are also those times that you can have fun while learning! The wisest or most influential quote that I have heard so far is probably, " Winners never quit and quitters never win." -Vince Lombardi.
ReplyDeleteThe most influential person in my life has probably been my grandma because she has taught me how to kind and she is the greatest role model I have. What lessons I have learned from her is how to love, not love a person but to treat them with respect and show love to them and make them happy. She ounce told me that "it is not your words that define you but your actions" and "there are no original ideas but only original people."
ReplyDeleteMy most influential person in my life would be a number of people because I can't choose just one. My person would have to be my teachers. And once again, I can't choose just one, so I say all of them. Every single teacher I've ever had. Why? Well probably because they teach us stuff, and they make it fun if you look at it in a certain way. I've learned things in Math and Social Studies that I'll never forget. And I've seen things in Science I'll never forget, ha ha. One of my favorite quotes, and one that I'll remember is, "Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice makes permanent."
ReplyDeleteMy most influential person in my life would probably be Mr. Grant because you as a teacher have taught me so much about Social Studies. One of the crucial things that you have taught me is SLANT because some of the teachers weren't the biggest fan of me until I started to do SLANT! One of my favorite quotes is "I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in life. And that's why I succeed. -Michael Jordan.
ReplyDeleteThe most influential teacher/person is my dad. He used to be a teacher but now he is not but he still is a teacher in my life. He has helped shape me in my everyday life. I love him so much. He has taught me a lot. He has taught me how to be nice and helpful daily. One of my favorite quote from him that he says everyday before I go to school is "Be nice to your friends and listen to your teachers." It's not famous to the world but it is famous in our home.
ReplyDeleteThe teachers in my life that have influenced me are my school teachers, my soccer and basketball coaches, and my parents. They have all influenced me on how to act around others. Weather it's on the soccer field, basketball court, at school, and throughout my life. I have gathered how to control my temper some of my coaches have overreacted about unfair calls. Since they did overreact they were kicked out of the game. The most influential quote i heard was from one of my basketball coaches they said, " Get comfortable being uncomfortable" This told me to always be ready for the worst and never settle for one thing. Always stride to the biggest of your ability and never stop until you get what you want. Without my teachers in my life I wouldn't be the person I am today.
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that have influenced me the most would be all of my middle school teachers and my swim team coach. All of them have taught me to strive for success, but my swim team coach has been the most influential. Every day he has a new quote for us and he always teaches me to try my hardest. The best quote that he has told me is that,"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that have influenced me the most are the all of the middle school teachers. They have all taught me necessary skills to operate in the real world. The life lesson that I have gained from a teacher would be to always try your best and and if you fail keep trying. Another life lesson is one that Mr. Grant taught us at the very beginning of middle school, he taught us SLANT. " Failing to plan is planning to fail." This one I really like, I have always sort procrastinated but when I heard that it has helped me to plan better.
ReplyDeleteAll of my middle school teachers have influenced me a lot. Mrs.McClure has had a lot of influence on me because she has shown me that you can't "not care". If you do your work and pay attention in class you will be able to succeed. Science has been the most challenging class for me so I have had to work hard. I have learned from Mrs. McClure that life will not always be easy. My favorite thing that I've heard Mrs. McClure say is, "Just do your work and I'll get you were you need to be."
ReplyDeleteThe teachers in my life that have influenced me is my Parents and all my softball coaches. My parents have influenced me that whatever comes your way you can get throw it as long as you believe you can do it. Then my coaches have influenced me by showing me that if you want it then you have to go get it that it will not be given to you. I have learned for a life lesson that you have to work for what you want and nothing is going to be handed to you. The wisest quote that influences me is that as long as you give it all you got or even 110% then you gave it all your heart then that is a true win and you are a true champion.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me the most is my fourth grade teacher, Ms. Walter. Ms. Walter influenced me by helping me become organized... at least more organized than I was. In second and especially third grade I had a really hard time staying neat and tidy. My desk looked like a tornado had been living in it. In fourth grade I was taught how to be organized. Becoming organized has especially helped me in middle school and will be super helpful for high school, college and even a job. " Sometimes doing your best is not enough." this means that sometimes you tried your best but you could have done more to make that "best" bar a little higher.
ReplyDeleteI love teachers day it is a great opportunity to get to thank all of our teachers and I like that they have been so patient with us through the year even if we forget something big or have not a care in the world for something that is key Thank You Mr. Grant
ReplyDeleteThe teacher that has influenced me the most by far is Mr Grant. He has tought me so many ways to study, cooperate, and lots more. From him I have learned S.L.A.N.T. and how learning can be interesting. He has made my least favorite subject of all time my favorite. He informes us about everything but makes the class interactive by talking to everyone and and being funny. I know the first day of 6th grade and walking into his classroom was probobly one of the scarest things ever and you have to watch out to not be wacked by a meter stick but he is one of the best teachers I know to this day. Thank you so much for being such an awesome teacher!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe teachers that have influenced me the most are Mrs.Russell and Mr.Grant. They have influenced me by pushing me and making learning interesting and I can now make learning interesting in all of my classes and not just those specifically. A life lesson they have taught me is not to procrastinate. A quote that I heard that I like is "Failing to plan is planning to fail"-Mr. Grant. And that quote helps me not to procrastinate
ReplyDeleteI have had so many teachers that have had an amazing amount of influence on me. One in particular has taught me to always try my best and to believe in my self and to never give up.
