Rio Olympics

Sunday was the closing ceremonies of the 2016 Rio Olympics games. While there was significant controversy leading up to the games, it is fair to say that the games brought some very memorable moments to the Olympics and the United States.

During the 16 days of competition, over 11,000 athletes from 207 Olympics committees competed in 42 different sporting disciplines with 306 medal groups up for grabs. This year was the first time athletes from the South Sudan, Kosovo as well as a Refugee team competed. The United States had 554 athletes representing our country. Of the 554 athletes, 292 or 53% were women, the most of any delegation. The women of the United States captured 27 of the 42 gold medals and 61 of the 121 total medals for the United States.

We were able to witness some remarkable performances by athletes.

Simone Biles - US Gymnast was the first person ever to capture 4 gold medals in the sport. She took gold as part of the US gymnastic team as well as individual gold medals in the overall competition, the floor exercise, and the vault. In addition she received a bronze medal for her beam performance.

Michael Phelps - Wrapping up his career as perhaps the greatest
Olympic swimmer ever. Phelps captured 5 gold medals and one silver. This brings his total to 23 gold and 28 total medals. This is the most of any athlete ever. The next closest is at 18 medals.

Kristin Armstrong - Kristin Armstrong took her third gold medal in the women's individual time trials. She captured her gold medal in Rio the day before her birthday. She received a cake from the Today show the morning after her victory. Not to mention, she is a Boise native.

Abbey D'Agostino and Nikki Hamblin - You may not know their names, but you may no their actions. D'Agostino (US) and Hamblin (New Zealand) were running in the women's 5000m race when they tripped over another runner. After returning to her feet, D'Agostino find Hamblin, helps her to her feet, and encourages her to finish the race. D'Agostino was injured in the fall, but with the encouragement of Hamblin, finished the race. The moment captured to true spirit of the Olympics and the spirit of competition. Even though they were out of the competition, they were both awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal, which has only been awarded 17 times in the history of the Olympics, for demonstrating the true spirit of the Olympics.

These are only a few moments of greatness. I could have easily referenced a number of others including Katie Ledecky, Usain Bolt, Brazil's men's soccer team and countless others. The Olympics can bring out the best in all of us.

Did you watch the Olympics? Why or why not? What was your favorite moment? This year they added rugby sevens and golf to the games. What sports would you like to see added for the 2020 Tokyo Games?

  1. Yes I watched the Games because it was fun to watch and I enjoyed cheering for the USA at home. My favorite moment was watching Lilly King swim breaststroke and win first place. She did the 100m breaststroke in 1:04.93. I would like to see bowling and kickball added to the 2020 Tokyo Games. Kickball is something that many people enjoy doing and is very fun to watch so I think it would be a great addition. There is many people that go to competitions for bowling and I think they would enjoy competing in the Olympics.

  2. Yes I watched the Olympic games. I watched the games because these Olympics only come around every four years, and it is a time that our World comes together and I think that it is important that everyone participates in that. My favorite moment was watching Katie Ledecky win the 800meter freestyle by eleven seconds and beat the world record by a whole body length. This summer my siblings and I did a mini Olympics and we added many sports such as bowling, hula hooping, jump rope, and foursquare. My siblings and I had a ton of fun, the one thing we didn't do that I think should be added is tether ball.

  3. I watched the Olympics this year and I really enjoyed them. I mostly only watched the Olympic gymnastics. I watched the other sports too but only because my family wanted to watch them. My favorite moment of the Games this year was when the French gymnast did a vault and broke his shin. I think that they should add rock climbing, tumbling, and baseball should be added in 2020.

  4. Yes, I did watch the Olympics this year. I felt like they were a really good year of Olympics. I watched them because I have found the swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball very entertaining. My favorite moment was Simone Biles' floor routine. She is amazing. The sports I would like to see added is synchronized swimming. It sounds boring but is very fun to watch. They actually have synchronized swimming but it is not televised. I believe that it should be. I am very excited to watch the 2020 Tokyo games.

  5. I did watch the Olympics this year because swimming is not on T.V. very often, so I love to watch all of my favorite swimmers compete and also see track, gymnastics, volleyball, and many other sports. My favorite moment was seeing Yursa Mardini swim. She competed as a part of the Refugee Team. Yursa Mardini decided to leave Syria, where she used to live. She went by boat with about 18 others, and part way through the journey their boat broke down. She actually volunteered to pull the boat in the water for about 4 hours. I think what she did shows lots of bravery and dedication. It was truly amazing to watch her compete. I think it would be cool if Double Dutch/jump roping could be added. I think that would be super fun to watch, some of the routines they do are really cool. Tokyo 2020 is going to be great!! I can't wait to watch!!

In the 2020 Olympic Games I would like to see surfing added to the Olympics. The only issue I could see with that is that the Olympics would have to be somewhere on the ocean.

  11. Yes, I did watch the Olympics. Why? Because my parents had it on. I'm not allowed to change the channel. The Olympics were sometimes boring and sometimes interesting. My favorite moment was the interview with Laurie Hernandez. She loves emoji's and her favorite one is the pee-a-boo monkey. I also loved when the U.S.A. people win gold! I think they should add men's gymnastics, dance, cheer, and surfing. Those would be really fun to watch, and interesting things to see.

  15. Yes, I watched the Olympics this year. I love watching the Olympics every 2 years. I like watching all the country's compete against each other in track and field and the high dive. I feel its the most exciting event to watch next to swimming. The women gymnastic teams killed it this year, breaking records left and right. I loved watching Usain Bolt destroy everyone in the mens 4x100, mens x100, and many more races. He is truly the fastest man on earth. If I could add a game to the 2020 Olympics it would be is capture the flag. This would show many ability including speed, strategic ability's, and stealth.

  19. Yes, I watched the Summer Olympics. Watching it was super fun and my favorite sports were track and swimming. I loved watching the track races seeing some of the fastest people in the world competing for gold. Mohamed Farah winning the 500m was super fun to watch. My favorite moment was that race when Mohamed Farah was in the pack of the pack all most the whole time then when he went to get to the front He tripped and almost lost all hope, but then he came and sprinted and won the gold medal I hope to be like him some day in a hockey game when all hope is lost we make a comeback and win a gold. I would love to see like Gage capture the flag. When I play capture the flag you need speed and to mess with the other teams mind so your team mates can go and get the flag it would be super fun to watch.

She had a bloody nose because she was so dehydrated and she got off her bike and sunk to the ground and cried. She was so excited when she found out she won. She showed real American grit and determination in that race. Next Olympics I think they should add Polo. It is fun to watch and it requires lots of balance to stay on the horse.

Plus I am not really into watching biking or gymnastics and other stuff the Olympics show. Yet I did see the women water polo crush another country which was my favorite part. Yet I would also like to see American Football and Tug of War added to the games even though American Football is a long shot.

My favorite moment was when Usain Bolt won the 100m dash because it so cool to see him do so will and to see how fast he runs. I want to Tug a War added to the Olympics but its really silly and is not a "true" sport.

  44. Yes I did watch the Olympics. I love them so much. My family doesn't always agree on teams so the Olympics are fun because everyone is rooting for the same people. The Americans. My favorite moment was when Simone Biles won gold in the team all around, vault and floor. This is such an accomplishment for a 19 year old girl in her very first Olympics. I think that they should add hunting to the Olympics because it is actually a sport and is very difficult.
