Earth Day 2015

April 22 marks the 35th Earth Day in the United States.  The idea for a day dedicated to the environment originated 7 years earlier by Senator Gaylord Nelson.  He was concerned over the lack to awareness and regulations of the pollutants being released into our world.

Now more than 35 years later, Earth Day and its organizers have increased public awareness of pollutants, identified and promoted “green” acts, have leveraged our schools and communities to enhance the knowledge and dedication of our youth to the cause, and countless other accomplishments.

The Earth Day websites (http://act.earthday.org/) is tracking personal pledged to commit “green” acts.  The pledges include recycling grocery bags, unplugging appliances, recycling paper and plastic, and buying more local food.  While each of these acts may seem futile on their own, the impact of the collected groups across the globe will have a significant impact on our environment, especially over an extended period of time.  To date the website has over 1 billion personal pledges.

What do you think of Earth Day?  What are some additional ways we can support Earth Day at school and in our community?  What are things you do at home?  Are there any additional activities you would be willing to commit to at home to support “green” living?

  1. I think Earth Day is a great way to spread awareness about the ongoing problems in our environment today. The holiday celebrates how far we have come in making our world a little "greener," as well as finds new ways in which we can do even more for our earth. To help support Earth Day, I believe that schools should make it a bigger part of their curriculum. They could have class discussions about ways we can improve our environment, and maybe even pledge to do small things to make our lives a little "greener." In our community, we could host annual services, such as planting trees or disposing of litter. At home, we can do simple things like recycle more often, buy reusable grocery bags, and use less water. I would personally commit to doing these things, because even though they seem small, they can have a big impact on the environment. This is our world, and its time we took better care of it, for generations to come.

  2. I think Earth Day is a perfect way to spread awareness on environmental problems. It is also a nice way to "give back to the Earth" meaning we are the ones that made it so disgusting so by devoting a day to the Earth annually it is a nice way to make up for the damage we have done to the Earth. I think that a way to support Earth day in school would be to Devote our homeroom class to learning more up how Earth day came to be and the importance of it. At home you can do little things like not take a shower that morning or turn off the faucet when your brushing your teeth, or stay off the electronics for one day so you don't use up electricity when you have to charge your device. In the community you can do something like plant a tree or two or thirty! little things like that can make a huge difference in the long run.

  3. I honestly dont like Earth Day. Its kind of an excuse for something to celebrate. We shouldnt have only one day devoted to helping the Earth. We should help the Earth everyday by doing the little things like turning the lights off and using less water. We dont have to do something big to help the Earth. If we all do the little things like not waste food and carpool then we can all make a difference. At home I try not to waste food, use less water, and turn the lights off. Those are the main things for me. I wouldnt mind planting a garden at home to grow plants to eat.

  4. I like the idea of Earth day. It shows us how much we need to work to keep the Earth clean. Then again, we should always be thinking about keeping Earth clean, so on that aspect I am not so sure about the holiday. It is a good way to give back to the environment. In the community, we can ride bikes more often and not use cars, we can pay attention to what is recyclable and not recyclable, and we can pick up after ourselves. The fact that Earth is polluted is mostly the fault of humanity's laziness. At home, you can make sure to turn the lights off, you can lower the air conditioner when you leave, you can shorted showers, and you can unplug things you aren't using. At home, I would defiantly do these things because they take up so little time and make such a huge difference!

  5. I think Earth day is a great way to spread awareness about pollution and other substances harmful to our earth. I like that we can help our planet become a better environment to live in but I don't think that Earth day really has a lasting effect. It is more of "Oh it's Earth day!" and then everything is done and a lot of people don't do something to better our earth. Some ways we can help our earth become a better environment is by having more programs that are easier to get to. One example is cleaning by the river. At home we plant plants and trees and try recycle and reuse as much as possible. I think that at our house we could recycle more.

  6. I think that Earth Day is great, but I think that half the people in the people in the country only pay attention to earth day on Earth Day. It is great that Earth Day raises awareness but we need to be aware all year. I think that our school is doing a great job with recycling and that is one of the best things to do to help the environment. I will help the environment by wasting less water and throwing away less food. I can also see if my family wants to start composting and reducing the energy that we use.

  7. I believe that Earth day is a great way to raise awareness and draws our attention to it... for only one day. The name of a nationally celebrated day draws our attention and then we move on. I think a great way of spreading awareness is if we were to expand upon Earth Day instead of glancing at it as April 22. To support Earth Day, I believe that schools should involve it more in the lifestyle of their teachings and ingrain it into the students as a value. Having trash cans filled with paper and other recyclable items doesn't help either. Reduce, reuse, recycle really has a huge impact on improving and working towards a healthy community. I know that at home we do simple things such as turning off the lights when we leave a room or using reusable grocery bags when we go shopping. The little things that everyone commits to doing accrues over time and allows for a healthy lifestyle and a large environmental impact. I would be willing to start wasting less water and food during meals and I think that starting a garden would be a great thing to do.

  8. Earth Day seems a bit pointless to me because it outlines ideas that should already be a part of everyday life. But, it still is a time to be reminded and to form new habits. Positive habits are like a chain reaction - it ll starts with YOU. If I go over to a friend's house and they has a special recycling system, chances are that my family may start implementing a similar plan. At my home, we do recycle plastic, paper, and cans, but we throw out glass. Maybe, my family should begin a collection bucket for glass and take it to the recycling center. It seems like like a lot of work, but it really does make a difference.

  9. I like earth day is a good idea because it opens peoples eyes a little wider. Then again, people should already be practicing these things, and we shouldn't have to make a special day in order to raise awareness for our planet. We are the Stewards of the Earth. A way to help is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. We recycle glass, plastic, and paper. We also reuse old plastic tubs like cottage cheese tubs. We wash them out and then we use it to scoop our dogs dog food. I think it would be awesome to car pool and lessen the cost of gas prices and reduce pollution. Get a hybrid car, I know our family can't get a hybrid car because our family couldn't fit in one but still it would be cool. also I would like to pick up trash on streets or trails once or twice a month.

  10. i think that earth day is a great opportunity to be "green". I do think that instead of making it one day of the year, we should be making it everyday, like are we just going to commit to being nice t the earth that we should be nice to the earth all the time, instead we are just commiting to helping mothernature out for one day, then after that day what are we doing... useing plastic useing way too much water, and waisting the naural gass. We need to stop doing the least and put as much effort we can in everyting, not just earth day. As i just said some additional ways to help the earth is to tend to it more often. not use plastic bags, use more sturdy bags over ad over again, use less water, the california drought needs some:) things like that. At school and in our community would to be picking up trash, and if it was nasty probably throght it away, but if it was unused than use it for something elce.i owuld be up to taking less tme in the shower. growing my own crops. drinking less water and in general use less water. pick up trash on the side of the road. become more eco-frendly, like for example you could swap your fossil fules for french-fry oil. and let you car run off of that, or just use a bike. use solar pannals. and i know that i have left the light on once or twice, so you could make shure that att the lights are off.

  11. Earth Day is a great idea. What I like about this day is that we focus on making positive changes to our environment one step at a time. We are constantly trying to figure out ways to make our planet more “green.” One of the largest ways students can support the environment at school is to make sure to recycle our papers. Ways we can support the environment in our community is to ride our bikes or take the bus. We can also use reusable bags instead plastic bags. At home, we can turn down the the heat at night, making sure to turn off the lights before you leave the the house, and limit water consumption while doing the dishes or showering. Additional things I could do is to grow a garden because I know my family and I have done that in the past. Also, I can recycle more often. These changes might be simple and small, but they will have a huge impact later on our planet.

  12. Earth Day would be a great holiday if the world actually acknowledged it. Earth Day doesn't mean go sit on the couch and drink soda while watching Discovery Channel or Animal Planet. We all know April 22 is Earth Day, but do we actually do anything to help the earth on this day? Right now, trucks are destroying the Amazon Rain forest, but Greenpeace and WWF aren't taking enough action because our ignorant American culture is stopping it. Sure, you can recycle your stuff, but how much will it help the world if only a few people pitch in? I'm no anti-earth day guy, but how much are we really helping the Earth on earth day if oil is being drilled, fuels being used, cars driving by, lumberjacks and trucks at work destroying our oxygen releasers? So I tell you, is Earth day impacting the Earth that much at all? The only thing that is stopping us is our laziness and our ignorant minds about the environment that only one planet in jillions of galaxies that has been supporting life for eons that we are letting go to waste. Do I care about Earth Day? The answer is no, not unless we actually take action. We can help communities and schools be picking up and recycling trash, but after this one of 365 days, we will just go back and keep wasting our precious, one out of bazillion planets that actually supports life, and just let this one die out if we do not use conservation.

  13. I believe that Earth Day is a good day to get people back in the spirit of regularly practicing habits that promote the earth's health. During earth day, people make an effort to be "green" and do his or her part to practice beneficial habits. However, I think people need to put forth a conscious effort everyday to keep the earth we live on clean.

We can support Earth Day at home and in our schools by recycling often, make others aware of the detrimental effect we're having on our planet, going to the streets and picking up trash, and even supporting an organization that strives to protect other organisms and their environments! At home, I typically try to recycle as often as possible, and pick up trash when I find it on the ground.

I would be willing to learn more about ways we can help our ecosystems to thrive, and also try to learn about additional means by which I, personally, can see to the betterment of our environment as a whole. Promoting a "green" society is very important, and I'll try to do my duty of acting on just that!

  14. I think Earth Day is a great holiday and a great idea. I also think that people around the planet should be helping our environment every day. People should be thinking "green" all the time. People shouldn't drive everywhere when they can be taking a bus. People shouldn't litter when they could be recycling. We should support Earth Day at school by recycling our papers and not throwing them in the trash. We should support Earth Day in our community by riding bikes or walking instead of driving everywhere. At home we should turn out lights when we don't need them, take quick showers, etc. I would be willing to recycle more often and ride my bike more rather than have my grandpa drive me where I need to go. We should make our environment better now so our planet will healthier in the future.

  15. I think earth day is a great holiday because it has to raise awareness for our country. Some things that we could do at school is to help clean up trash and other stuff in our community. Some things that you can do at home are taking a short bath, don't waste your food, and don's waste water. We can walk instead of using our cars so then we won't have pollution.

  16. Earth Day is a respectable and well-needed holiday. I think it was created for the common good of the environment and it's people, and the only way to maintain a good environment, is to keep it green and be aware, and that is the purpose of Earth Day. Our school has a great recycling program, so maybe we should start to encourage other schools to do the same, and make a little competition out of it to help it even more. At home, we recycle and limit uses of things like water or energy. I would be willing to go out of my way to do a little extra and make a difference.

  17. A lot of people are saying that earth day is pointless, that we should help our world everyday, and I agree with them. But, for me earth day is about learning. As I have gotten older, earth day has become less and less celebrated, but I remember doing all sorts of things for earth day when I was little. Education is the best thing that you can have on your side, and that is what I think earth day is about. It is about learning what you can do to help the world, and reminding you that the world DOES have its limits. I think that earth day could be supported in our school more. I mean, I didn't even know that it was earth day until I saw the question of the day in Mr. Yanci's room! I try to take shorter showers (big fail on that one), recycle often, and basic things like turning off lights. I could probably be more careful about what I recycle, and the water that I use.

  18. I think that Earth Day is very unappreciated sometimes. With all the talk about "global warming" it does seem pretty stupid. But Earth Day is not just about a bunch of people passing out flyers on street corners about how to be green. It is about make sure that our planet is around for future generations. One of the best things we can do is remember to turn off lights around the house because that saves a lot of electricity made from the burning of coal. Also take shorter showers so water heaters don't work as long and so that everyone one in a drought can still have enough water too.

  19. I think Earth Day is one of the reasons that most people try to be environmentally friendly. It's a good reminder that we need to reduce, reuse, and recycle because our Earth is precious to us. One of the things that got me excited about Earth Day is getting those little rubber Earth balls on this day and getting to play with them outside at recess. My family doesn't really do anything for Earth Day;sometimes no one even mentions it. A way to get more people on board with protecting our Earth is to get them outside and see why the earth is cool. Like just opening a window in the house to see the world and get fresh air. Or having class outside when the weather is amazing right now. Seriously. We need to have class outside. Can you put in a good word, Mr.Grant?

  20. I think Earth day is a good time to raise awareness to everyone about our earth but dont pay attention to iit that much. I have more important things to do than celebrate the earth. I am grateful for the beautiful earth but earth day is not a big deal for me. I domt really do much for earth day but I guess I could stop taking long showers and recycle more. For my family, earth day isn't a big deal but we do talk about ways to keep our earth clean. mostly examples like don't waste water and recycle as much as you can. I guess I can start living more green by recycling a lot, stop wasting water, and turn out the lights in rooms I'm not in. And I agree with lucas. We should have class outside one of these days.

  21. I think that Earth day is kind of good, but like Taylor said, it seems like just another holiday to celebrate. Yes, it's important to think about our earth and take care of it, but shouldn't we be doing that everyday? Some ways we can support Earth Day in our classrooms and at home are by being more efficient. Like taking shorter showers, turning off the lights when you're not using them, and not leaving the water running while you're brushing your teeth. The things that I listed above are the things that I do. One thing that I want to do to be more green is installing solar panels. I know that it costs a lot to instal them and care for them, but if people started doing that, the world would cut down on pollutants.

  22. I think Earth Day is good but we shouldn't just have one day devoted to going 'green.' We should just make everyday earth day instead of just doing it once every year.Ways that we can support Earth day at school is to not leave the fosset running in the bathroom, taking shorter showers, and turning off the lights when your not using them is a few ways that you can be green every day. I would try to make a garden in my backyard so we can have fresh veggies every day.

  23. Earth Day is a holiday. It is recognized but not much action occurs. Every year on Earth Day kindergartners will learn about how we need to not waste our resources and stuff like that. The they go home and take a bath, using almost forty gallons of water. It is great that we learn about this every year but every year we talk about the same thing and nothing happens. We need to take action.

At home I do my best to take a five-minute shower, using around seventeen gallons of water. I also try to clear my plate and not wasted food and water. I definitely could do more.

To "live green" I won't EVER smoke, and will convince others to try and car-pool, to take shorter showers, and to not waste your resources. I could also try to get my family to use solar energy.

  24. Earth Day is an okay idea, but like Todd and Taylor we should be taking care of our Earth everyday. Just doing little things makes a difference. You don't have to go out in your yard, with a sign telling people not to leave their water on. we need to take care of our Earth, don't get me wrong. I love this place, but I do not agree with extreme ideas. For example, in about third grade, my teacher told us that we shouldn't use matches because it was bad for the trees. That seems a little drastic to me. And I don't want the government using Earth Day to forward socialist ideas. Like when the government puts a limit in how long you can have your lights on, or how long my shower can be. That is using the excuse of taking care of the Earth to forward political stuff for political party gain. But I encourage taking care of the Earth 100%, I just don't need nor want the government stepping in on this because we become blind and will loose our freedom if wee let ourselves be sold that way. Wow I'm off topic.
Anyways at home i will recycle things and plant more trees in my yard. And personally I will use a car with good gas milage and things along those lines.

  25. Earth day is a special occasion, a holiday, a party for all the tree huggers, but most of all Earth Day is underestimated completely. By me, most people, and probably you. Personally, I remmber it as nothing more than Cece Fitz's Birthday, and I think that says something about the signifigance of the actual meaning to me, though I fully respect and LOVE our environment.
Some ways we can work toward the place where Earth Day is very relevant, are that we can recycle, reuse, and reduce. By recycling we can reuse, and by reusing we will be reducing. Simple as that, or complicated as that, depends on how you look at it. Other ways I would do this at home are simply taking shorter showers, not wasting my food, and recyling plastic bottles, cardboard, and anything i can. I think grren living can men anything from riding your bike to school, to eating healthy, so really the options are endless.

  26. I think that Earth Day is a day to think about our earth and how we can protect it for our future generations. Some ways that we could support earth day in our school and our communities are: less water, this could be when we wash our hands, take showers, or even wash our teeth. We could also recycle. In my house personally, we recycle, turn the lights off when we are not using them, and conserve water. At our house, we live by the Boise River, so any water that we use to water our lawn comes from the river and recycles itself. I would be willing to do a "Green Day" This is basically a day that you help plant trees and other plants such as flowers and bushes.

    1. I think that having a day devoted to the Earth is very important because it reminds the world that we need to take care of it. However, I don't consider it a big deal, and I don't know anyone who does. To be totally honest, I didn't even know that Earth Day had passed before seeing this blog post. Of course it is important for all environmentalists and conservationists, but to most of the world, it's just like any other day. I think that the world definitely needs to start paying more attention to the Earth. But I mean that in everyday life, not only Earth day. There are many little things that keep our planet green. Recycling plastic and paper is something that my family does in our everyday lives to help. I knew someone who composted all their scraps of food to earthworms to make dirt or something of that sort. So yes, I do think that Earth Day is important, but not nearly as important as keeping the Earth clean everyday.

  28. I think Earth Day is a good Idea because it reminds us that our earth is important and it is a big deal to lots of people. I don't really care about it much even though I recycle. We can support earth day by recycling and reusing things both at school and at home. Activities that I would be willing to do at home are that I would ride my bike more often, take a shorter shower, and recycle everything I can.

  29. I think earth day is a great way to spread awareness of what we are doing to our earth. We are destroying it and we need to change the way that we do things. Some ways that we could try to save the earth in our community is recycle. We can reuse so many things if we just recycled. It would also stop landfills from being created. Some things I can do at home are cleaning off my dinner plate instead of wasting so much food. One thing that I think is kind of stupid is that there is only 1 day. Earth day should be 365 days long.

  30. I think that earth day trys provides awarness for how well we take care of our earth. I don't think many people celebrate it or know when it really is. This year I didn't even know it was earth day until someone told me at school. I don't really think it provides that much awarness but the holiday is there to provide awarness. We can support it by recycling and by trying to use less pollutants. I think our school does a pretty good job at recycling but we can still do better. At home you can also try to recycle and also try to produce less garbage because garbage pollutes our environment and if everyone produced just a little bit less it would help save our planet. Another thing you could try at home is to put natural things back into the soil with a compost pile where you can put your egg shells, news paper, and wood which makes it so you don't have to put it in the trash. I will try to reuse things to help the earth such as not using plastic water bottles and using refillable water bottles.

  31. I like the idea of Earth day. I think it's a cool day to have to show how great our earth is. WE can support earth day by cleaning up in our community and at school and I agree with Lucas on having class outside or something like that. Things you do at home are cleaning up outside your house. Maybe to take an oath to not litter and treat earth with respect.

  32. I think the idea of Earth Day is important but not effective. I mean c'mon did anybody really stop and think about doing little things to help out the earth, that they don't already do. If you did than good for you but I definitely didn't. Some ways in school we can support earth day is by acknowledging it. We also can maybe have a day where we just recycle, or unplug the chrome books. At home we can try and not use as much electricity. Honestly not really I could take shorter showers but I like to have a good 30 minutes of quiet time. :)

We can help by just cleaning up trash if you see it on the ground or just stop littering. You could take shorter showers, recycle and reuse more, and not use as much electricity. Also, try to not use our car as much as we do. You could carpool with someone else, or even ride your bike.

  34. OK so Earth day is a pointless day that people are for one day like O recycle that and pick up that trash. Its like that one day and that all. Its sorta stupid like think that way everyday or not at all. I dont really do anyhthing I just go through it like any other day at home I recycle plastic etc but thats every day I dont just recycle one day and I think that the problom. I know I do my part I dont litter on the streets and that so Earth day is pointless and un meaning ful to me personally.

  36. I think Earth Day is a great day to make aware world issues about our environment. Biking to school is a good way to not pollute our atmosphere, carpooling is also good way to save gas. I recycle and take 5 minute showers. My parents use LED light bulb. Yes I will be planting a garden and reusing water for dishes.

  37. Earth day is pretty pointless. It makes people go,"Oh gee it's Earth Day, so let's pick up trash and recycle.'' Then the next day it's back to normal. In my life I recycle plastic, paper, and glass. That's my everyday life, not,"crud it's Earth Day, time to recycle."

Some things I could improve on to help the environment are:
-Take shorter showers(not stand there and sing...)
-Use less paper(I use wayyyyyy too much)
    - Use less electricity(towel dry my hair instead of blow dry...etc.)
There are so many more things that I could do better for the environment, but these were, what I thought, the most important.

  38. I think Earth Day is a great way to get involved with saving the environment. To support Earth Day, we can make posters about conservation and place them around the school and the city. At home, I turn off the lights when I'm not using them, recycle paper and plastic, throw away what needs to be thrown away, as well as turn off water when not in use. Other ways to promote green living would be to carpool with others, ride my bike to close places, not waste food and compost the remains.

  39. I think having a day devoted to the earth is really great. I mean the earth is what sustains human life, without the earth we would all be hopeless. To support earth day at school we could do a school wide school pick up. Also we can make sure if we see trash around on the street to pick it up. At home I recycle and take shorter showers. Also turn off the lights when they aren't in use.
