Some look at the start of the New Year as a chance to wipe the slate clean and start new. Many attempt this by identifying New Year’s resolutions. January 1st is a day to try to break old habits or to start new habits to live a better life. Below is a list of the top 10 resolutions compiled by newspaper across the country.
- Spend more time with family and friends
- Exercise regularly
- Lose weight
- Enjoy life more and stress less
- Manage money better
- Take a trip
- Learn something new
- Help other
- Get organized
- Attend church
What do you think about the idea of setting New Year’s resolutions? Why do you think so many people have difficulty keeping their resolutions? Are you the kind of person that sets New Year’s Resolutions? Why or why not? If you did set any New Year’s Resolutions, would you mind sharing?

I really think that the idea of having New Year's Resolutions is not important, mostly because you should be changing throughout the year. After people's determination of their goals dies away, they lose all interest and get back to their lives. I don't feel like I need resolutions - I'm perfect...JK. I don't do resolutions because if I can't keep them, which I won't, they are pointless.
ReplyDeleteI think people set New Year's resolutions because they feel like they could be better as a person. I like the ideas of resolutions but I think that they should happen whenever you feel like you need one, not specifically on New Year's. I am the type of person who sets New Year's resolutions if I feel like I need to. If I am happy with myself, then I won't. I think that people have difficulty with keeping there resolutions because they are lazy. They can make up excuses but that is just them telling themselves that it is ok that they didn't go through with it. I did happen to set some resolutions though. I decided to spend much less time on my phone because I don't like it when people use there phone in a conversation, and I also think that people get so glued to their phones that they really need to stop.
ReplyDeleteI think resoulutions would be a good idea if people kept their resoultutions if they don't keep their resoltuions the idea of it is pointless and stupid. If people would keep their resolutions then they would have a lot more meaning. I think people cant keep their resoltutions because they are lazy, or there is to much temptation. I have on News years resolution, be more organized, I am cannot stay organized.
ReplyDeleteNew Year's resolutions are the perfect way to fix bad habits in your life, and start fresh on a new note and a new year. Sadly, very few people actually stick to their goals. Things get in the way:school, jobs, family, and just life in general. But I respect someone who creates and keeps there New Year's Resolutions, because they are truly willing to change their habits and start fresh, to become better people. I wished I was like those people. Sadly, I am always busy and never find enough time to keep up with my goals. And I always regret not having accomplished them. This year, I am planning on being more involved in school activities.
ReplyDeleteI think that setting a New Year Resolution is a great way to potentially improve yourself, and examine your flaws and things that you could do better in. However, I don't really like the word 'resolution,' because it sounds like something that is forced upon the person and something that they don't fully want to do. Instead, I like the term New Year's Goals.
ReplyDeleteI think the main reason why people have difficulty sticking with their resolution is because they aren't fully committed, and are also slightly lazy. While I'm not saying that I don't think people have busy lives, I think it is often used as an excuse to why someone can't accomplish a certain event or task. I think that focusing intently on your goal and not backing down is a way to avoid this from occurring.
While I don't set resolutions, I do set goals. However, I'm not the kind of person who keeps a list of them or anything of that nature. Instead, I keep them tucked in my head and just work on doing my best, knowing that I will accomplish them if I'm doing this. I think that it is important to set goals so that you can work to achieve more, and ultimately become a better person. I also think it is important to strictly know what you are going after so that you can accomplish it. Don't make it vague and ambiguous so that you can't get it accomplished.Because, what are you working towards if you don't have a goal?
My apologies, I forgot to add what my goals were. During this year, my main goals are to...
Delete- Maintain my current grades in school, as well as trying to improve socially.
- Get to know God more in my own personal way
- Treat others with more respect
I also plan to increase my knowledge, and continue to work hard.
I think that New Years resolutions are a great way to break old bad habits and start new ones doing more good things. I think that being able to wipe the slate clean is a great thing. Many people have trouble keeping their resolutions because they often forget why they wanted to do it in the first place. They forget the purpose and by summer it has slipped their mind. I do set New Years resolutions but I have a lot of trouble keeping them. Some pf the resolutions that I set this year- Run more, Get better at basketball, and be nice to everyone.
ReplyDeleteNew Years Resolutions are my favorite thing about a new year. They give us the opportunity to show our values and views of life.I think that the idea of setting New Year's Resolutions is fantastic! Just like that cliche New Year saying, "New Year, New Me," we are striving for ways to put our best foot forward, and bettering ourselves each year. I think some factors that contribute to giving up on our New Year's resolutions are that people tend to put their goals on the bottom of their list, instead of making it a priority. Another reason may be that some people create a non realistic goal, so they capitulate to it, and just try to do it the next year. This New Years, because I was alone in room snapchatting and texting people..I decided to write some resolutions. My goals are: to be happy and accepting, to see the best possible side of everyone, and to take chances and make mistakes(while learning from them.)
ReplyDeleteI like the idea if setting New Year's Resolutions. It may not be for everyone but I think it is a good thing to do. It gives people a fresh start and makes them start thinking of ways to make themselves better. No one's perfect, everyone has something to fix. New Year's Resolutions allow them to think about those flaws. In a way it can give you more confidence in yourself because you think of what to fix, but you also think of how to fix it. It makes you a better person and can allow you to have better confidence. However, they only make you better if you are able to KEEP your resolutions. I believe that most people have problems keeping their resolutions because they son't do it long enough to make it a habit. They don't have the willpower. That sounds harsh, but it is true. If you had the willpower then you would be able to finish what you started. Personally, I kind of set resolutions. Meaning, they are not something I think about to dearly, but I do try to think of small things to make myself better. I do it because it gives me a sense of pride. I can look back and say, "Hey, I do not do that bad habit anymore. Now I am a healthier, better me." That is the goal I want to achieve after setting a resolution. Some of my resolutions are telling the WHOLE truth and not hiding anything and I also want to eat healthier.
ReplyDeleteI really don't like New Years Resolutions. They get annoying because everyone makes one but by February they have forgotten. They only are talked about and followed in January and December. Everyone says "new year, new me" But the same thing happened every year and they end up in the same place next year. I think no one keeps their resolutions because they have better things to do than thinking about them everyday or they just forget. I don't set resolutions and I never have. People say them like they're bragging. "I'm going to eat healthy," "I'm going to do better in school," but they never follow so it is just a waste of time. Years aren't even important. They are just a category of time, not a new concept. Everyone needs to change but why just make a goal at the beginning of the year. What's wrong with trying to change in May?
ReplyDeleteNew Year's Resolutions are something to do for the new year to better yourself by stopping habits and making new good ones. I think resolutions are a good idea for other people because a new year is considered a new beginning and a chance to change. People have difficulty keeping their resolutions because some are habits that are too hard to break. Some people are also really lazy and they can say that they have resolutions but they don't act upon them. I am not the kind of person to set resolutions because I know that I won't be able to break my bad habits so quickly, and I can set a goal at anytime to break these habits.
ReplyDeleteSetting New Year’s resolutions is a great idea. It’s a time to reflect on yourself, to see what you’ve accomplished, and what you could’ve worked on over the past year. I like New Year’s because it’s usually a positive time. You start fresh and make new goals to achieve over the year. But the difficulty for maintaining these goals for all of us is just simply life. Many people have jobs, school, sports, chores at home, etc. It can be hard to maintain your goal(s) throughout the year when you have other tasks you must complete in your daily life. It can be done, but I definitely think it takes effort. I set New Year’s resolutions, but sadly I tend to forget my resolutions as the year goes by. This year I’m going to try to remember my New Year’s resolutions throughout the year, and accomplish it.
ReplyDeleteI think setting New Year's resolutions is a great idea. I think people have difficulty keeping their resolutions because they forget or can't commit to what they said they said they would do at the beginning of the year. I am a kind of person that does not set New Year's resolutions because I usually can't think of anything to commit to. But I do set goals for the future.
ReplyDeleteI think that New Years resolutions are a great thing. They help people set goals they would like to accomplish throughout the year. I think people have a hard time keeping their resolutions because it's not just a week thing, this is all year. They might forget about them, or not have time to do them, or just not want to do it at all. I am not the person who sets resolutions because I forget about them until after New Years. I would like to start doing New Years resolutions. ( If I can remember )
ReplyDeleteI personally don't like to set new years resolutions and things like that. Maybe it is because i don't really understand or maybe it is something else, I have no clue when to start and when to stop, do i start at midnight and end the next year? I think that so many people have trouble breaking habits or changing your life for the better, because maybe they set a goal that is way yo hard for them, for example smoking. If you have done that for s while and made a habit of smoking every day after work than that goal is way to hard, you need to every year take a tinny step, like not smoking that second cigar every day, to not smoking the morning cigar every Tuesday. and then work you way up to quitting. I am not the kind of person who does new year resolutions, I don't understand them and it is hard to think off a good one. And i don't have a new years goal.
ReplyDeleteI think that t for some people, News Year's resolutions are helpful, but useless to others. I think the reason that most people don't keep with their resolutions is because they are in a habit that is "too hard" to break. Personally, I'm not the kind of person to set goals because I have seen so many people fail to maintain a resolution, and I'd rather try to set a resolution but instead for just a year, all of the time.
ReplyDeleteSome people do you not like New Year's resolution. People don't bother New Year's resolution because you had a bad plan or do you not have enough motivation. I always make a New Year's resolution. I like having something to look forward to you at the end of the year. Some of my New Year's resolutions are to be healthier and exercise.
ReplyDeleteI think the main idea for New Years resolutions is to start new and fresh in the new year. I think people don't keep their resolutions is because it's tempting to not do something or to keep it. Also, it's hard to break their habit that they have had for a long time. Most people don't keep their resolution for a month. I sometimes do New Years resolutions, but I think it's a good idea. I should do them more often.
ReplyDeleteI honestly hate the idea of new year resolutions it is a horrible thing that gets people to think they can do something that they have in the back of there mind, which is also the reason so many people cant carry out the resolution. Im not the type of person that does it because I dont want to let myself down when i do i want to rip my hair out thats me just not wanting to fail at it, my #1 reason I absolutly hate them and ill forget it my the end of january. since i dont have one ill say what mine would be if i had one it was to try to be a alot nicer and work harder everyday in life, take care of myself better, in terms of physicaly and mentaly
ReplyDeleteI think the idea is good as long as you can keep your Resolution. I think the reason people don't keep their resolutions is because they have work or school to focus on. No, I don't set resolutions because I know I will never keep them, but I still try to live daily life well.
ReplyDeleteNew years resolutions are a good way to start fresh and break habits but, people don't remember them. I think that people can't keep new years resolutions because they don't stop to think a bout them after about, January 2nd. I set some new years resolutions but they are one that I have been working towards for a while. Most of the time I don't like new years resolutions because I end up like all other people and forget them.
ReplyDeleteNew Year's Resolutions are a great way to start off the new year and also to start fresh from last year. The reason why people don't keep their resolutions is because they don't start to think about the new year resolutions for this year. No I am not the person how likes to set New years resolution for myself so then I wont have to do them and also like other people I will forget to do them.
ReplyDeleteI think new year's resolutions is a great thing to do, although you should be trying to improve and fix bad habits throughout the year. I think most people lose their determination and commitment to doing new year's resolutions. They try to come off strong and then end up forgetting or committing to them. I usually set new year's resolutions but I din't find myself making any this year. When I do make new year's resolutions, I don't normally share them because then when I find myself not keeping them or something gets in the way, someone usually brings it up or mentions it.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of having new years resolutions! It is a great way to start fresh and set new goals. I'm the kind of person that doesn't forget what goal I set. I think people say they forgot because they really don't want to do it. I love setting goals for the year! Plus, it makes me feel super happy when I complete a goal I have set for the year. This year my goals are a bit more long term then they were last year. My goals are:
ReplyDelete-I want to loose a little bit of weight and stay in shape. In order to do that I have to eat healthier foods. I'm not overweight I just want to lose a few pounds so that I am happier with my body image, and I also might want to do track or cross country next year!
-Maintain good grades in school and turn in all work.
-Stay active as well as stay in shape. I should exercise more often then basketball practice.
- This goal may sound stupid but I want to become more physically flexible. That means stretching often. I really want to get my backbend and splits. No, I'm not a gymnast.
I think resolutions are goals that a lot of times are broken. I think resolutions are sometimes just set because its one of the traditions for the new year. In some cases people just set random goals and never achieve them. I think some goals aren't achieved because people set goals that are a little to hard for them to achieve. Some people pick good goals and achieve them but a lot of goals are ones that are toohard for them and doesn't motivate them enough. Personally, I don't really set goals for myself just because im not really interested in the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of New Year's resolutions, but I don't think they really work. I think so many people have difficulty sticking to their new years resolution is because they make a resolution just to say that they made one. They don't really believe in it or set their minds to it. I'm not the type of person that sets New Year's resolutions because I think you can set a goal for yourself any day of the year. It doesn't have to be on New Years, and I think New Year's resolutions aren't taken that seriously.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea to set New Year's Resolutions because it's a good way to make some goals or changes in the new year. The reason I think ppl dont keep thier resolutions is because a. their lazy or b. they think its too hard. I do set New Year's Resolutions. My New Year's Resolution is to talk to ppl face to face more instead of always on the phone (ps I took a quiz online to find out what my resolution should be). In conclusion I think that ppl SHOULD set New Year's Resolutions because there should always be some kind of goal that U should try to reach and there is always something you can change about yourself.
ReplyDeleteI think resolutions are great but most people don't really follow their goals they set. If you can set resolutions and follow through with them that's great. I think they have difficulties because they don't always have their minds set on the goals they set and then just forget about it. No, I don't set resolutions because I'm not that interested and probably will forget about it.
ReplyDeleteResolutions are a great idea, but not if you dont follow them. Its not that they dont work, its that people aren't following through with the goals. I think that people set to big of goals to accomplish that they dont follow through with them. i personal set resolutions and some of them work and some dont.
ReplyDeleteWell, I could care less about New Years resolutions, because to make better choices and goals, it only takes me a day to set one. I think New Years resolutions are just for people who are too lazy to set new, great goals every day. Plus those people don't even fulfill their goals. In think it is hard to keep these yearly goals is because people don't set good goals often enough. All you need to do to fulfill your goal is to not even think about it. (And no, after my blog I don't think you guys would expect me to have resolutions)
ReplyDeleteI think new years resolutions are great. People don't have to do it even though most should. People have trouble keeping resolutions because they are lazy or decide they don't think they have to do that certain goal. I do like to set these goals because there is always something I would like to change about my self for the better. My goals this year included: Keep up with my school work and finish the year strong.

ReplyDeleteOOPS!
DeleteI like the idea of New Year's resolutions, because it makes people notice their flaws and try to correct them. I agree with others that most people forget about them, but are you one of those people? If you set a goal, you need to remember it, like writing it down and putting it somewhere. Some people do not keep their goals because they do not know how to set a good goal. It needs to be attainable, in your control, and measurable. I usually set reward for myself :). Some people do not care to change at all, and those people are usually the ones that have the most flaws. You don't have to set New Years' resolution, just try to be a better person. The new year is just a stepping stone that people like to use. I think that most of the people who do not set New Year's resolutions don't want to because they think that they can't obtain their goals. I set new year's resolutions, but not exactly on New Year's, just sometime around then. The goals are usually the same that I set through other thing. For example, at the beginning of the year I set these goals in the assignment from Mr. Grant. I am using these for the new year too. These are:
ReplyDelete#1- What I am trying to accomplish this year in school is to review my science notes from that day at least three times a week. Science is my hardest subject, and I would like to improve in it. This will help me understand the material better, and increase my intelligence.
#2- What I am trying to accomplish this year in social studies class is to raise my hand at least once a day with a great, on topic question. This will help me gain more insight on the stuff we are learning in class.
#3- What I am trying to accomplish this year spiritually is to use Pope Francis’ five-finger prayer every week, and to not act like it is a chore to have to go to Mass every week.
In addition, I set these loose goals:
-Donate more of my money that I earn
-Support my friends and always be there for them
-apologize when I have done something wrong
-don't obsess over grades, but still be aware
#3- What I am trying to accomplish this year spiritually is to use Pope Francis’ five-finger prayer every week, and to not act like it is a chore to have to go to Mass every week.
New years resolutions have become a fad over the years( this just an observation). Its a great idea and I encourage it. But people don't always achieve these set goals. I personally find giving up stuff for Lent more effective in my life. I also use an old celtic tradition called Dream or Hope Box. on a slip of paper you put what you want to be like or something that you wish will happen in the near future. Then you must do everything in your ability to active it.
ReplyDeleteMost people have New Years Resolution. They want to keep them but usually can't. I think that New Years Resolutions can be a waste of time or a huge help, depending on the person. Some people have a hard time keeping their resolutions. I think that it is mostly because people forget and give up. A person that sets a resolution must have a strong drive to achieve it. I, as an individual, don't set resolution because I am a person that wouldn't care too much. If I were to set a resolution that I believed that I or others could benefit from.
ReplyDeleteI think that making New Years Resolutions are very healthy and good for your emotional and in some cases physical health. When people set New Years Resolutions all they are really doing is setting goals for themselves. I think that is a very good thing because it inspires people to take a shot at being a better version of themselves. Sadly, many of the people that set their resolutions don't stick to them. I think that if people could stay true to their resolutions, our world would truly be a better place. I personally don't set New Years Resolutions. I actually used to every year, but I found repeatedly that every year I broke them, so I gave up. However, I think that when we go into 2016, I'll give it a better shot and try again.
ReplyDeleteI think New Year Resolutions are a great thing to do, but I thing keeping them is a very difficult thing to do. I think it is a hard thing to do because you have to keep it for 365 days which makes it difficult. To me an easier way to keep them is to set a monthly goal instead of a whole year. I am not that kind of person that sets New Year Resolutions because I don't feel like having one and they are just to hard to keep. Also when you don't have one you don't have to worry about breaking it.
ReplyDeleteI think New Resolutions are terrible because everyone forgets to do them and then never retry's doing his or her resolutions. People are very busy and it is hard to keep a new years resolutions for a year. No because I will probably forget the very next day to do it. I did not set any New Years Resolutions.
ReplyDeleteI think setting New Year's resolutions is great. It gives you a goal to strive for throughout the year, then my the end of the year if you have completed your goal, you can celebrate your achievement. I think that people have such trouble keeping their goals because they make the goals very unrealistic. Some people try to do things all at once instead of easing in the goals. For example some people who only go to the gym once every couple of weeks might make a goal of going every day. Where they should make the goal to go at least twice every week. Yes I do set New Year's resolutions.I do this because it gives me something to work towards through the year.I did set some resolutions they include, having a solid grade in every class, getting more sleep, and strengthening my friend ships.
ReplyDeleteI think tht New Years resolution is great because you have a goal to try to accomplish through the year. I think that it is difficult becasue either peolpe easily forget and they try to hard to redo it and then never get to it. People realize that it is too long nd hard to comite to. I dont set resolutions becasue i dont really have a reason to do it. I think that i am kind of too buisy to know what kind of stuff i have to accomplish.
ReplyDeleteI think New Years Resolutions are good but not making ones that you have no intention of keeping them. Most people won't even complete them for a week. I think people should only make a few resolutions and make them ones that you will be committed to and will definitely do. I never really set New Years Resolutions every year, but I try to keep up on a few things all the time. I know what I have to keep doing in the long run.
ReplyDelete-Exercise in some way at least every day
-Keep good grades
-Make it clear to loved ones that I love them
-CHORES
-Pray everyday
I think New Years Resolutions are good. They give people a goal to look stride for. Although the Soviet Union isn't really liked Im going to bring up the 5 year plans. In five years I will be here or in this case 1 year. People have a hard time keeping their resolutions though. I think it is because of doubt. People just think they can't and if you keep telling yourself that you won't. But if you tell yourself I CAN, then you just might be able to. I don't set New Years Resolutions because I don't really think. I will just tell myself what I should and shouldn't do.
ReplyDeleteNew Year's resolutions simply give you an excuse to be a better whoever you are, unless of course a new year's resolution of yours is to kill 12 people by july, but ya know. However resolutions are difficult to keep, because poeple set unrealistic goals like writing a book, or going to the gym everyday for a year.
ReplyDeleteMyself, just like all the hopeless dreamers out there take my new year's resolutions dead seriously, and give myself at least three dyas to make them up because I feel that if you are given a chnace to become a new person once a year, every year, you should take it. My new year's resolutions are:
1. To re-learn french, it will be my third language.
2. Really say what I feel, and mean it.
3. Face my fears, and get to a place where there are no more fears left to face.
4. Finish my book. Yes, I am writing a novel.
I think New Years resolution are a scam. People can say new year new me but what actually matters is if they are true to themselves about it. I think people don't keep their resolutions because unless you are serious about keeping that as a goal, they will just put it off and get priorities straight. I have tried to set a resolution before and it didn't work. I just don't think just changing something about yourself because everyone else is doing it is wrong.
