Malala Yousafzai

Malala Yousafzai is the youngest winner ever of the Noble Peace Prize

Malala is a young woman who decided to speak out in her native country of Pakistan.  She wanted the world to know education is important .  She wanted to the world to know women in her country are being denied their basic right to education by fanatical groups.  Her outspokenness and commitment to pursuing her education inspired many and resulted in assassination attempt by the Taliban.

In 2012, at age 14, the Taliban issued a bounty on her life.  Aboard a bus with her friends, a man entered the bus with a Colt 45 and shot Malala in the head.  Miraculously she survived.  She has been through multiple surgeries to repair the damage, but suffered no major brain damage.  She was healthy enough to return to school in 2013.

This is a short interview between Diane Sawyer and Malala:

She has not allowed the acts of violence against her and her message deter her.  She continues to speak out about the power of education and the rights of women to secure those rights.  In 2013 her autobiography, I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, was published.  She has been asked to speak in front of the United Nations and, most recently, was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

Malala is a strong, committed young women.  What are your thoughts on her story?  Why is education so important?  Why do you think there are groups of people in the world trying to deny children and education?  What are your thoughts about your education?

  1. I think that Malala's story is incredibly inspiring. She stood up for what she believed in and is continuing to inspire people all the time. I had heard about Malala previously, but going into depth on this topic has just showed me more about her and made me support her more. The fact that she was willing to die for what she believed in at such a young age is amazing to me. Honestly, I don't think that I would be able to do anything like that. Education is extremely important for people, especially children, because it helps them much later on in life. If you are older and just starting to learn things that you should have learned in elementary school-I just don't think that's right. I think that the taliban and other groups of people don't want children to have an education because it makes them more powerful. If the people all had a good education, they would probably find more strength to possibly rebel against the terrorists. I never really thought about this too much, but after learning about Malala's story, I am so grateful that I am able to get an education that will help me my entire life. Malala is inspiring, and I'm glad that she had the courage to stand up for what she believed in, because I think that a lot of people (me included), now realize even more how lucky we are to live in the United States and to have an education.

  2. I think that she is an amazing role model and really believes in herself. Se really deserves this award. Without education you are ignorant and you are vulnerable. Education is also the basis of a good nation, as Mr. Grant has said. Without education, the Taliban can turn ignorant people into their 'subjects' and the people wouldn't know otherwise. Education is a key part in anything, because without knowing, you can't make a change.

  3. I think that she is a great person. She believes in herself and stands up for what is right even if it puts her at risk. I believe that the award was well given. Education lets us expand. We need education to invent and stand up against the Taliban. Without education, the Taliban would become a dictatorship over the uneducated. I think that education is very important because we need to get a good job and make sure bad parts of history doesn't repeat itself.

  4. I think Malalas story is an amazing story about a brave person that wants a say in what is right and wrong. She took a big risk and it payed off. Education is so important because thats what runs every nation and country. It helpes us know right from wrong, it helps us with strategy, it helps us keep our country running and stable. I think that people are trying to deny childrens education because they don't want them to become smart and able to know that what they are doing and they don't want people to be able to know what they are reading and saying to eachother and what might happen. I think education can be a great thing that kids should have to learn and shouldn't have it denyed from them. Education can be a bad thing though there are somethings that children shouldn't know. In the long run there is dmore good education them bad and education will help mwe and you for the rest of life and beyond.

  5. I think malala's story is inspiring because she stood up for women's rights for education in Pakistan I think that groups would try and to deny education is because the Taliban doesn't want the girls in Pakistan to learn at a school. I think Malala is very brave because she stood up for women's rights to be educated in Pakistan.

  6. I think Malala's story is inspiring. Most kids in America don't like going to school. They would rather stay home. But here is a teen risking her life for education. She would rather die young with education than live to be old with none. She is standing up for women's rights at the cost of her life. Education is important because it makes people stronger. They won't live in fear. If there is no education no one can do anything. Everything is limited. There is no chance of anyone overthrowing the government. The Taliban probably thinks that boys are better than girls so they limit girls education. Education makes a person stronger.

  7. Malala's story is one of bravery, determination, and sacrifice. Malala was only 11 years old when she started speaking out, the same age as most of us. Yet from such young and humble beginnings, she has a better understanding about the importance of education that probably any of us will ever have. And the thing was, she never stopped. She kept fighting, even though the threat of being shot still hung above her like a thick, deadly fog. And yet, Malala never hesitated, not even blinked. She just did what she knew was right: fighting because women deserve as much education as men. And her story will continue to inspire me. Now, I have never been in a situation where I was discriminated from something because of my gender, but I would be horrified if I was. No one has any right to tell you that you are not good enough, no matter what race, gender, or ethnicity you are. We are all people, and we all deserve the chance to live freely. Education is especially important, because it is like a passport to a better life. No matter where you began, a proper education can always change your life for the better. It can get you a good career, which leads to a paying job, so that you and your family can live in peace, not having to worry about money. I firmly believe that education can change your life, no matter who you are. No one should be deprived of that opportunity. That's why I feel so blessed to be going to an amazing school like St. Joe's. I think that groups like the Taliban are trying to keep certain people from going to school because they are worried that with the proper education, the people will be smart enough to uprise against them. How many people in the Taliban do you think actually went to school? Probably not that many. The more educated people in the world, the less likely terrorist groups have of surviving.

  8. The story shows of a strong, brave, heroic woman known as Malaga. She was raised by a teacher driving her to believe strongly in a great education. When faced within terrorist threatening to kill any girls going to school, she took a bullet to the head. Even after she was shot she is still fighting for her rights which is wonderful and I admire her. Education is important because it defines us and it gives us a future. Without education we would be lost and we would be limited to a very tiny amount of things to do. Terrorist groups try to take away education because education leads to awareness and knowledge, which lead to intelligent people, which can lead to power, which leads to a huge threat to the people leading. They are normally terrorists. I love my education and I believe that it drives me to be the best I can be because the more I learn the better my future will be.

  9. It is a good story because she is brave and courageous to sand up against her government for women to have an education and equal rights. Education is so important because it helps us know. It gives us knowledge. It shows that we are intelligent. In some countries they believe that only the strong survive. So children are weak and they might see that education is a sign of weakness. My education is great. Everyday I learn something new everyday. I am very fortunate to have a education and go to St. Josephs school.

  10. This story is unlike all others. Malala's story is one of the most brave stories I have heard since the Navy Seals defeated Osama Vinladen. Malala was willing to risk her life to promote education, through the toughest times, including when she was shot. Her story is special because not only because she is like 16, but she had the courage to stand up against the Taliban. Education is crutial in anyone's life if they want to go to college, get a job, and even have good friends. Education is what keeps our world peaceful, although we always have some big conflicts here or there. I honor my education, and pray I will always have a perfect one like the education I get daily at St. Joseph's School.

  11. I think that Malala is a brave girl who is very strong and determined. Her story is one that will stick in history forever just like Nelson Mandela or Anne Frank. Education is very important because the more we know, the better informed we will be when we make decisions. The groups of people who want to take away education want to make sure that people don’t have the knowledge or ability to question their authority and to keep those people from having opportunities and power. My thoughts about my education are that I am very lucky to go to a place where I learn new things every day.

  12. I think that she was a brave person, because she was able to win a noble peace prize. Education is important because without it we would not know much of anything. I think that people deny kids education because they are afraid of being overthrown. I think that education is a great thing because you can learn what you want to learn about.

  13. I think Malala is a very brave person. She will stand up for what's right and doesn't care what happens. She is strong and very courageous. Education is important because everyone has a right to learn and if you are not educated you can't go to college and get a good job. I think there are groups of people in the world trying to deny children and education because the don't think they have the right to learn They don't think they need it. I think my education is important because outside of school it carries over to things I do everyday. Without my education I wouldn't be where I am today.

  14. Malala's story is awe inspiring. She stood up to the Taliban even after receiving death threats and was aware that her safety was in jeopardy. She was very determined and still is. She even published a book so everyone would be aware of this problem going on in the world. Education is incredibly important because it teaches people of all ages how to think dependently and interdependently, which helps us make decisions. It helps us with the promise of opportunity to make our life better. Education defines us to the point of how we learn, think, and act. I think people like the Taliban don't want people educated because it gives them courage, self-assurance, and makes them more powerful. Someone the Taliban might consider a "threat." After hearing Malala's story in full detail, it makes me appreciate what I have and never take it for granted. It is weird to think that many people don't get that. It is incredible to think that even though Malala was almost deprived of learning, she is still managing to teach us all.

  15. She is a real role model. She refuses to give up in the fight for women's education in Pakistan. She is a living reason to never give up. Without education, you probably won't be able to get a good job to support your family.I think people in other countries don't want women to get education because they believe women should only cook, clean, and do housework, which is totally wrong. Our education is great. We have teachers who deeply care about our well-being and education and a school that really cares about the students it has.

  16. Most of the girls in Pakistan that aren't getting an education, probably feel that they should, Malala was one of the ardent ones, who did something about it. Education is important because it helps us realize the importance of life, by teaching us how to form opinions. Also, in a situation were jobs are low, having an education is very crucial. Most students in the U.S. dread going to school, because of the lack of sleep and amount of work, but I think we all need to take a step back and realize how truly fortunate we are. The reason I think that certain people try to prevent girls, or children from being educated is because they are afraid. They are afraid of losing their power to educated people who know what they're talking about, rather than gaining power with violence. I am very pleased and proud with my education. But, if you really want to learn and become successful, you must be fervent and want to learn.

  17. I think that this lady's story is very interesting. I think that it's very awe-inspiring that even though she lived in a very bad environment, she was able to stand-up for what she believed in and remained strong even when she was nearly killed.

Education is so important because it allows our country to progress throughout continuing history. If people weren't educated, then our society would retrogress and we would lose our humanity overtime. Education ensures that we have a society that will continue to advance upon values and technology.

I think that there are groups in the world who are trying to deny people education because they want to remain in power and don't want people to think that what they're doing is wrong. If you don't give people education, they will become ignorant and very easy to rule over. This makes people like puppets, and those who have education will be able to control those who don't.

I'm very grateful for my education because I know that I have many more privileges then those in other parts of the world, and even more then in other parts of the U.S. I'm also looking forward to one day making a difference in the community because of the values and work ethic upon I have been raised. It's all very exciting!

  18. Malala's story is truly inspiring. She stands up for what she believes in about education for girls. Education is so important because it helps grow and learn as a person. I love being able to have an education because it helps me understand the world better. I loved Malala's quote, "I think words, books, and pens are more powerful than guns. I think that is true because she took a bullet to her head and she survived. God made one of his miracles for her to survive because God knew she was doing a good deed for the world. you shouldn't take education for granted because having an education is an amazing opportunity.

  19. I think her story is incredible, its not easy standing up for what you believe. Education is important because it gives people power. The power of being able to think. I think the reason people want to deny them the right to learn is quite simple. Its the same reason the slaves in the south weren't educated, the more you know, the more power you have.

  20. I think that above all things, Malala's story is important. It is important for women to see a girl being one of the best examples of peace the world has seen. It is very bizarre to see someone be peaceful when other people have tried to kill them. Even though she is a girl her story is inspiring to me to be kind in whatever I'm doing and whoever I'm interacting with. Many people in this day and age know nothing about peace and set out to cause as much chaos as possible. Had some of them known of Malala's story it may change their lives. I think the only reason why people try to deny children's education is because they aren't educated themselves and think that education is useless. Maybe they were raised in a family who didn't value education. Some leaders of countries or organizations think that their followers or citizens will become too smart and overrun the country. I value my education and admit that sometimes I take it for granted. Even though at times school is hard I understand I have to persevere in order to do well in the long run. There are people in this country who don't have any education and therefore they don't have success in their lifetime and in some cases either do their kids. Without education our world would be chaotic and in ruins.

  21. Malala's story is one of those stories this is very inspiring. A very young woman who is standing up for what she believes in and doing it for any cost is, I think, absolutly amazing. She has so much bravery and courage and makes me want to do good like she is. Education is so important because without it we cannot live a happy life. Down to simple things even like reading street signs or a letter from a lovedd one cannot be done without education. Beyond that though, if you want a sucessful future, you must be educated. I think there are groups of people who want to deny people's right toeducation because they want to be in power and if other people learn how to be in power by bwing educated, they will not be able to.

  22. I think Malala's story is amazing. It shows how anyone can make a difference. She is strong enough that even if she gets shot, hated, or outlawed she will still stand tall. Malala had a lot of support from her family. She could have started to stand up and than been shunned, but her family helped her and let her fly(metaphorically). Education is very important. Education is everything. If people weren't educated and didn't learn, we would still be living like cavemen. I think there are groups of people in the world trying to deny children education because they are scared that one day, if those children learn, the children will become smarter and society will be different. People are just scared of change. I think everyone deserves a good education and we need to reach out to those who rant as privileged as us and teach them.

  23. I think that Malala's story is cool. It shows that if you try you will succeed. Education is important because without it we would have nothing. The reason that people try to deny education is because they want people to live in fear. I like my Education here at st. Joes.

  24. I believe that Malala's story is very inspiring and it teaches you to reach for your beliefs and that education is very important.Anyone and everyone is capable of changing the world. People try to deny education because it makes people form their opinions and become well intelligent and intelligence is a huge threat and so are opinions.Education is a real privilege and being able to have the money to do it.

  25. I think that Malala's story is really inspiring. She stood up for what is right, and wouldn't back down. She was so young and brave when she got shot. I do think that she made some mistakes, like not wearing a mask. She was so courageous not to be wearing one, but even though she was standing up for what is right, sometimes you have to think about your own safety. She was so close to being killed, it is a miracle that she survived. I think that, as it is with every other terrorist attack, that even if she did die, it would have made everyone even more aware and strong. I think that whoever has the education has the power, and some people are so power hungry that they deny others that opportunity. They are scared of what would happen. I think that we are very lucky to have the education that we do have, and that we should use that power to help others that don't have it, people like Malala.

  26. Malala's story has always taught me to never to take education for granted and that persistence pays off in the long run. Education is important because it defines us and gives us power in our world. They deny them education so that they live in fear and do not have a voice in what they are doing to them. My education here at St.Joes is great and I couldn't ask for anything better

  27. My thoughts on Malala Yousafzai story is that she is a very courageous woman. Today in Reading we had to write about what we thought courage was and I think that it is when you aren't afraid to stand up for what you believe in. Malala is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs, she thought that girls had a right to go to school, so she went to school and made her decision public. Education is important to many people for many reasons, but for me it is the fact that I get learn about my culture and others. For me education is something that I shouldn't take for granted, but I still do. to most in the USA, they think that school i a reason for them to not get enough sleep and so then their parents don't have to take care of them. For Malala education is something that is a privilege and something worth fighting for! In some parts of the world trying to deny children learning, because then the children will have knowledge and may realize that their way of living is wrong. I think that education is important, because it teaches us right from wrong, helps us understand our own culture, and gives us a chance to know how to socialize with others.

  28. I think Malalas life story is great because it shows us that education is worth fighting for. Education is important because without it we don't know enough to live a good life. I think some people deny education because they don't want those kids to grow up and be strong and smart. I think my education is great. I couldn't ask for a better one.

  29. I think her story is a fantastic story that will inspire a lot of people. Education is so important because you wouldn't be very smart if you haven't been educated and also you wouldn't get a good job. Some people just have bad personalities. They think that only certain people should be educated. St. Joe's provides a wonderful education and I have learned a lot.

  30. Her story is well deserved. Education is so important becasue it gies you the brains but also gies you the social skills to live. The only reasons people are denying it is becasue they want the power to be within themselves. Honestly, i love school. so i guess that means i love education.

  31. I think Malala is one of the bravest people I have ever seen and heard of. Education is important to all people of all ages. It gives you freedom of what job and career you would like to have in the near future. Malala is inspiring because her voice wouldn't be silenced. I am grateful for my education and that I don't have to fight for it.

  32. I think that Malala is an amazing person. She is courageous, intelligent, and independent. Her story is amazing, inspiring, and breath taking. When you are educated you are also aware of what happens. When you are aware and intelligent it is easier to take advantage of you and block every thing out. I feel like education is very important. As I stated before, when you are educated, it is harder to take advantage of you.

  33. I think Malala story is amazing. She is very inspiring to girls, brave, and had a lot of courage to do that. Education is important because our generation and other generations need to learn and make new renovations. Improve in anything we may need like technology. People are trying to deny education because they don't want us to learn and they want to takeover. My thoughts on education is that it's great and when we get to think and come up with new things.

  34. I think her story is very powerful and inspirational. It is great that someone is brave enough to stand up for whats right. Education is important because not only does it give you your basic skills but it teaches you right from wrong and social skills which come in handy later. There are groups trying to stop education because they dont want people to become educated and overpower them. I love my education.

  35. I think her story is rly inspiring to not only woman but also men. I think education is important because u can have a better understanding of the world and how u live it. I think the real reason of why groups of people in the world are trying to deny children of education is because if they don't get smart they won't question their choices and how they do things, they want to deny child education because they want to rule over the dumb and take over, making them think that wat they r doing is right. I think education is a value,..... I just wish there wasn't so many...

  36. i think that Malalas story was very inspiering. She tells us the good but also the bad. She teaches the girls and te boys to stick up for one-another and to believe in what you believ in not what others tell you to believe in. She has said many inspirational ideas to us and I thank her. To malala education is important to everyone. Education is what we live off of and how we can live an live successfuly. Education is important to everyone even if you think that it is stupid. I think that thier are poeple out thier to stop children from education because they are jealous and they feel left out because they can't do wht other, younger people are doing. They feel like they don't have anything to keep them with love so they decide to kill other poeple for thier needs and satifaction. My thoughts on education are that that is how we can grow up and fir in society. We think that going to school is the worst thing in our lives and really people it is not so bad. The teachers take thier tie and effort into spening time but also laughter. Teahcers and us should always be thankful for what we have and how we use what we have becasue you NEVER know what is going to come up in our lives. We should ALL be thankfull for education.

  37. I think Malalas story is very inspiring. She teaches the world that people should be aloud to be educated. She sticks up for the people who are not aloud to be educated anyway she can. I think education is so important because it helps the country grow. By that I mean The future of the country should be educated so that they can know what to do whem a crisis occurs or how to handle problems that require a lot of thinking. The country will go down the drain if the people arent being educated.i think the groups only deprive the people of learning just so that they can have power over everyone. i think my education is a lot better than some other peoples and i am luccky to have the education i do now.

  38. My thoughts on Malala's story really interested me. It shows that one person can make a difference in the world with what they strongly believe in. Education is so important because it helps you through your life by keeping you safe with dangerous stuff, so kids my age don't get the education they need and end up choosing bad choices. I think there are groups of people in the world trying to deny children an education because they are scared or they want to be in power. After reading this article I feel like I'm so lucky to be educated because there are other kids that would literally give up a limb to be educated. I am so happy to in a school where I learn something new each day.
