Breast Cancer Awareness

Since 1985, October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month.   It is an entire month dedicated to increasing awareness and educating the public of the causes and treatments of breast cancer.  While the organization continues the mission to educate year round, they take one month of the year to pour extra effort into the campaign.

If you pay close attention, you can find pink ribbons throughout the community.    My daughter picked up a car sticker from Dutch Bros with the caption of “Fight Like a Girl” to raise breast cancer awareness. If you watch football on Sundays, the NFL has joined the campaigned.  You will see different teams with some sort of pink accent, whether it be gloves, shoes, or towels.

Cancer is when cells in the body become abnormal and begin to divide without control or order.  Breast cancer is when this process occurs in the breast tissue of both women and men.  Cells dividing without order can cause excess tissue which forms a mass called a tumor.  While most tumors are not cancerous, many are.  The invasion of these malignant tumors can cause additional damage to other tissue and organs.

In 2009, there was an approximate 192,370 cases of breast cancer diagnosed.  That number includes 1,910 men.  In the same year there were 40,610 deaths including 440 men.  There are approximately 2.5 million survivors.  It is the second most common type of cancer in women (skin cancer is first) and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths to women (lung cancer is first).  With such a wide spread disease, it is difficult to find anyone who has not been effected or experienced breast cancer in some way, either with a relative, spouse or friend.

Measuring the total impact of the campaign to support breast cancer awareness may be difficult.  But it is true that there has been a significant decrease is the number of incidents (2% decline) and death (2% decline) in the last ten to fifteen years.

What do you think about having a month dedicated to breast cancer awareness?  What companies or organizations have you seen supporting the campaign? Are there other diseases which could benefit from starting similar campaigns?  If so, what disease and why?

  1. I think that Brest Cancer Awareness has gotten out of control. The football players are wearing pink and it is the awareness month. I have nothing against raising awareness for this cancer, but people know about it and have put funds into it. Now It is time for the NFL and Nike to move their money to a new cause and raise more awareness. Like I said this awareness is great, but Breast Cancer isn't the only cancer or issue out there. For example, Chuck Pagano had leukemia, and there are other reasons to raise awareness.

  2. I think that Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great idea. I know, just about everyone in the US knows about the disease, but it is still a good idea. We get so wrapped up in our own lives and problems, we forget to think about how many people's lives are ruined by cancer. And it is all around us (My neighbor was recently diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer). We need to take time and think about what we can do to help these people who really need our help. Not only do they need money for the surgery and treatment, but also to provide for their family, who they can no longer support due to the long recovery. With the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are able to spread the word of what this disease does, and show our support. Even wearing a splash of pink shows you care. I have seen action everywhere, but mostly on sports shows, where people rock the pink shoes, or claim they will donate money the next time they score a touchdown. But I have also seen the support locally. My parents recently went to an auction, and several groups of kids were there, preforming tricks in hopes to earn money for kids who had cancer. No, it's not necessarily breast cancer, but they are still trying to help. And now, other diseases are starting to benefit from these kinds of campaigns. ALS just had a huge income of money and support from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised thousands of dollars for research. And other diseases are coming out, like leukemia and other, less common cancers. For me, this is fantastic. We get a chance to make a big difference in these people's lives, by showing we care and donating our money or time.

  3. I think that raising awareness is great. Everyone knows about breast cancer and a lot of money is being donated to it. I think that a month for breast cancer might be too much because people might loose interest after three weeks. I would maybe just have two weeks for it. I have seen Nike, NFL, PGA tour, and Walmart support breast cancer. I think that Ebola could benefit from all the advertising because it is a deadly disease, it is a terrible disease, and unless I am wrong, there is no cure yet.

  4. I think that having a month dedicated to breast cancer is a great thing. I know someone who has passed away from breast cancer and I know that their family think it is a great idea. I have seen the NFL support the campaign and even the NCAA. There are definitely other disease that could benefit from this type of campaign. I think many different cancers including Leukemia and Colon Cancer and many more. There is also disease like ALS which kind of has its own thing, but it could still benefit from these types of campaigns.

  5. I think that this monthnis a bad idea because there are so many other things that this month could be used for. I do know that many sports teams wear all pink for their game to show awarenes and that major compinies make adds to show that they are donating money and that other people should so they rack ing a ton of money when this is totaly out of control. The other dissease's are ALS because we just woke up to the fact that tons of people are dying of it. Another dissease is any type of cancerbecause I feel like all he other ones are being looked over and aren't as important. They focus to much on one thing instead of the big picture.

  6. I think that breast cancer awareness month is a bad idea, personally. There are so may other life threatening disease out there. Why just focus on breast cancer. Why not skin cancer or pancreatic cancer? Why does breast cancer get a month when other disease need to be recognized too? Other disease deserve a month too. The NFL has been supporting this and so has Nike. People need to start thinking about the big picture instead of a tiny detail.

  7. I think having a month about breast cancer awareness is a good idea. I think it makes people become aware and makes them try to find out more. They might also want to help. I have seen the NFL and some college teams supporting this. I think it is very good that they are doing this because people pay attention to these things. I think some other diseases that could benefit from this like Ebola and Malaria because people aren't paying much attention to these diseases and they are coming very close to hurting us.

  8. I think that having a month for breast cancer is awesome because we get the chance to remember what had happened to the people with breast cancer. I is around my neighborhood because my mom has a friend that had a daughter die of breast cancer. So we are giving money to that family. Pancreatic cancer because my great uncle died from pancreatic cancer. I think that we should also give money to them because they deserve the same too.

  9. I think its amazing that we are raising awareness I love that everyone is supporting it. I like that the NFL Players are wearing pink stuff because everyone watches football they wear it because they want everyone to know about. I lve that they did that but we should also have a month for all diseases.

  10. It's cool to have an entire month for Breath Cancer Awareness because it shows that it is a really important issue if they give a whole month for it. The Susan G. Koman foundation is a big foundation that my family has donated to them a couple times. Since there is a whole month for it, people have paid more attention to it, similar to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that raised awareness for the disease.

  11. It is awesome to dedicate a month to Breast cancer.I see the NFL with pink ribbons. The Flu could use the NFL and have the Players get Flu shots and because people fallow what pro athletes and actors do lots of people would get a flu shot and everyone is HAPPY because there would be no more fly for that year, as long as people wash there hands.

  12. I think that breast cancer awareness is good because of how much support the campaign has picked up, but it is tome for something new. I know that I have seen pink ribbons of football helmets and on the walls of stores but the little pink ribbon , in my mind, is starting to lose it's meaning. I think that there are other diseases that could use some attention. Things like ALS got some popularity but i know that will soon kind of go away. Therefore we should give it a boost just like we did with breast cancer.

  13. I think that breast cancer awareness month is a great idea. Not only does it raise awareness for breast cancer, but because the pink ribbons are everywhere, it could stimulate awareness for cancer in general. I've seen pink ribbons everywhere. In stores, NFL, and Nike. There are so many other diseases that could use our help. In fact, I bet that there is hundreds of diseases that take lives that some of us have never even heard of. ALS was recognized by the ice bucket challenge. When everyone started doing it, it started raising awareness until almost everyone knew about it. I think there are so many other diseases that need to be recognize. We have only twelve months. And we have thousands of diseases that need to be recognized. Breast cancer, while the research and income is thriving, is only a small detail out of the big picture.

  14. I think that Dedicating a whole month , I think it is special and a good way to honor the people who have died and who have been fighting to end it. I have seen the pink ribbon everywhere; the NFL, and many others, including fences when you are driving to a different town. I cant think of any organisations that could use this processes.

  15. I think that breast cancer awareness month is a good and bad idea. Think about it this way. Breast cancer has so many funds going towards it, and so many people have it, that it is good to have a month to recognize a daily occurrence in our lives. I like how everyone is so enthusiastic about helping this great cause. At the same time however, there are so many other diseases that need attention. The ALS ice bucket challenge was great, because it raised so much money, was fun, and only lasted like two/three months. It came and went, and so have other fundraisers. Having a whole month set out every year is a little much. While having a month for one disease doesn't eliminate our care for other diseases, it raises it up above the others. It is basically like saying "Breast cancer has its own month because it it more important". Everyone should be valued just the same, and we need to spread out our attention to include other diseases.

  16. I think that it is special because a lot of women get breast cancer and some do not survive because it is so severe. For the ones who survived it, they feel honor when they have a whole month dedicated to them. The Boise Police Department supports breast cancer awareness, so does the NFL and even food chain restaurants. All forms of cancer should have a whole month dedicated to them. They each need recognition and support.

  17. I think it is great that they have a month for breast cancer awareness. I think other diseases should start something like this. Like ALS. It wasn't a certain month, but the ice bucket challenge raised so much money. If other diseases like other types of cancer, heart disease, ALS etc., there would be a lot of money raised for those causes too.

  18. I think that having breast cancer awareness month is a good idea, however I do not find it fair that other, possibly deadly, diseases do not get the same attention to raise awareness. I have not witnessed any specific companies supporting this campaign I have however seen many signs around town and on the highway spreading the campaigns and fund raisers based on breast cancer. Many diseases can benefit from campaigns and fund raisers to raise awareness. I personally have a relative whom has died from a very rare form of cancer and although it is rare whoever gets it doesn't have too much of a chance of surviving it. What I am trying to say is we should blazon awareness of all kinds of diseases because if we do this we can be saving that many more lives.

  19. I think breast cancer awareness month is ok. But what about all the other cancers that exist? If it were up to me, it wouldn't be just breast cancer awareness month, but cancer awareness month. Taking a month for just one part of a deadly disease is rude to those who have survived all of the other cancers, and haven't got to feel special for doing it. So I think that we should just have a cancer awareness month. Some companies I have seen are Delta Airlines, Dick's Sporting Goods, J.C. Penny, and a lot more. A disease that everyone is mentioning is ALS, which would be good for this type of campaign, because ALS needs a lot more research for diagnoses, vaccines, and maybe even cures.

  20. I love breast cancer awareness month! I'e seen all the sporting companies such as nike, under armor and adiadas. I think ebola deseres a month of awareness beacuase of the effetc it has done of many people in a short amount of tikme.

  21. I like breast cancer awarness month. i have seen the football teams wear pink for games because so they can have awarness to find a cure. I think that ALS should have their own month do dedicate because so many people has gotten ALS and that is why I think that AlS should have their own month.

  22. I think that having a month dedicated to Breast Cancer is a great idea but I think that they should have other months dedicated to different cancers as well. The major organization that I know supporting the campaign is, like you said, the NFL. I know this sounds kind of cheesy but I think that Ebola could benefit from starting a similar campaign. Not only would it start awareness but it could help fund doctors for curing Ebola in Africa.

  23. I think that having a month dedicated to breast cancer is a good Idea because my grandmother just overcame it and I know that the donations have helped her. I also think that the other cancers disserve a month too. I hope that they find a cure to breast cancer soon so that other cancer can have a month. Some organizations I have seen supporting the campaign are the NFL and some sporting companies. I think that Ebola could benefit from it because people would learn to understand how devastating it really is.

  24. I think that it is great to have a month dedicated to Breast Cancer because it makes the fact well known, and I am guessing that plenty of people donate to help during October. I have seen many organizations and companies one of the main ones that I have seen is BCA- Breast Cancer Awareness they have available donating sites and have people share their stories on the websites. I think that many diseases could be helped by having their own month, but Breast Cancer affects so many people and that is why it is a month.

  25. Breast Cancer Awareness month is great, because it raises awareness and money for the disease. I personally appreciate it because my mom had breast cancer. (She was one of the 192,370 people diagnosed in 2009 and one of the 2.5 million survivors.) Delta airlines painted a plane pink in 2010 to raise awareness and money. Loft had a limited edition clothing line and accessory line to raise money. And Panera made Pink Ribbon Bagels that have raised over $1.3 million. I think a month or week devoted to skin cancer or any other disease would be nice, just to raise awareness and money for the disease as well.

  26. Breast cancer awareness month is a great way to raise awareness about the disease. i have seen a lot of football teams, high school students, and people on the streets wearing all pink, to symbolize breast cancer awareness.

  27. I think that Breast Cancer Awareness month is incredible because I see simple things supporting it that are out in the community every day. Anything helps raise awareness, such as pink balloons outside of a store, or breast cancer bumber stickers on cars. This is all helping to raise awareness which helps the research efforts for the disease so much. I think that most of the donations to Breast Cancer support happen in October because of all of the efforts to raise awareness. I think that some other harmful and impactful cancers or diseases should get a month as well. However, there are over 100 different types of cancer so we can't have every cancer get a month. I think that we should have a Leukemia awareness month because it is so devastating for all of the families whose children get the disease. The symbol for leukemia is a lot like the symbol for Breast Cancer-it is a ribbon making the same sign, the only difference is that it is orance instead of pink. I think that having a leukemia month would really help the research efforts and help a lot of children and their families.

  28. I think it is an okay idea, but i like the idea of just a cancer awareness month. There are so many deadly illnesses out there and cancer is just one of them. No matter how much awareness there is, new sicknesses will evolve. Polio is no big deal now but i like the idea of CANCER awareness month.

  29. I think that having a month dedicated to breast cancer awareness is a good idea because not many people no about the affect threats this horrible disease has on people worldwide; It is especially detrimental if you live in a 3rd world countries and are unable to get the kind of treatment that you need. I have seen many companies participating in this. Many stores have a lot of pink stuff up near the check out area such as wristbands and socks. Also a lot of stores have been giving special discounts on pink gear in order to help you participate in this awareness month. I think that other disease like ALS and diseases that are under funded and people don't know much about could benefit from this disease.

  30. I love breast cancer awareness month. We need to raise money to fight this horrible disease and a whole month brings in tons of profit. I have seen nike addias, and under armor support this month. I think A.L.S should be a month because a lot of people are also affected by that disease. I don't know any other benefit from a month then to bring awareness.

  31. I think having a month dedicated to breast cancer is great publicity for the cancer, but if we do one we should probably have other diseases and cancers too.I have seen Nike, NFL, and Walmart supporting breast cancer awareness month..Yes. ALS because we need not only to focus on one cancer or disease but all or at least most of the major cancers or diseases

  32. I think having a month devoted to breast cancer is great because it makes more awareness and the stuff people buy raise money. I also like the uniforms gloves and towels the make they are pretty cool. Some companies I have seen make products for this are Nike, Adidas,Under Armor,Reebok and many others too. I think there should be one for ALS because it is another terrible disease that people have. Even though not as many people have it it is a harder and more frustrating disease that I think should get some more attention.

  33. I think having a whole month dedicated to breast cancer is a great idea because it can raise awareness and helps doctors research a cure. Similar to ALS people can donate or do the ice bucket challenge. The thing with breast cancer month is that there is not a challenge to do to persuade people to donate. I think ALS should get and awareness month because more and more people have been diagnosed with it, and still no cure. Ebola is similar but can spread like a wild fire. I think Ebola should get a month as well because it can get more people to donate so that the doctors can find a cure. There are so many other incurable diseases other than breast cancer that could use a cure. As I'm doing this my dad is watching Sunday night football(shocker) so I observed the teams for any accent of pink that I could find. I saw pink shoes, gloves, arm bands, towels, ribbons on their helmets, and the cheerleaders pom-poms were pink. I thought it was cool to see how many pink accents I could find. It is amazing to se how many people donate and take part in this month.

  34. I think that having a month detected to breast cancer awareness is a great idea. Not only does it raise awareness, but it also helps people become more sensitive. Nike, the NFL and other sports industries have been supporting those causes. When people say, " diseases what have awareness" people usually only think about the major ones. I think that so many small, but important diseases should have the same treatment. Such as mental illness, I am not talking about the common ones. I mean the mental illnesses that influence the way you act or feel. Before the Ice Bucket Challenge almost no one knew about ALS.

  35. I think that its good to spreed awareness for breast cancer. I saw a restaurant that painted their horse statues pink to spreed awareness, also on Twitter people ask u to do this or that to spreed awareness. But I think that every disease should have some sort of awareness because maybe their disease isnt that well know so they wont get treatment because not a lot of people know about it and donate to find a cure, so I think that every disease should have some sort of awareness because no matter how big or small everyone with a disease needs a treatment/cure unless their disease already has a cure/treatment.

  36. I think that having a month dedicated to Breast Cancer awareness is great! It provides a reminder for the doctors who are working on a cure to keep going - despite not receiving a solution to the problem. Also, it reminds people that the problem still exists, and that we need to keep fighting for a cure. As said in your post, I've seen various football groups supporting this cause; as well as Nike and a group of fitness organizations. Additionally, some smaller businesses around town have been advocating awareness for breast cancer. I think that there are other diseases that could benefit from having a campaign, but I think that the ones that get chosen affect many people, and are very devastating. I believe auto-immune disease awareness month would be a great thing to advocate for. While I don't know if there is a 'cure' for this; I think that we need to further look into how to prevent these. I received and have an auto-immune called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis which has greatly impacted me for 6 years, and led to many hospital visits and check-ups, which I must have monthly. I think that raising awareness for these types of diseases would greatly benefit the people who have them.

  37. I think havin a moth for breast cancer awareness is great because people don't realize how many people suffer from it. I have only noticed the NFL joining the campaign. I thing ALS should be a part of this because not very many people have it so people don't think it is important.

  38. I think a month dedicated to breast cancer is great. It helps raise awareness and reminds that cancer is still her. At times it can get a little out of hand because football players will be wearing pink and pink a little to much. I think that Ebola could get a month because it also growing and I think more or people should be aware of it.
