Teacher's Day - Confucius

September 28 is a Confucian Holiday celebrating the birth of Confucius. It is also celebrated as Teachers' Day. While many confuse Confucius ism with a religion, it is actually more of a philosophy. Confucius was not a priest or a deity, he was a teacher.

Confucius was born around 551 BC in the small state of Lu. He was born into an aristocratic family, although there is debate as to whether he had any money or not. During his life he served many influential people and his teachings became not only fundamental to Confucian philosophy, but to the general Chinese philosophy.

The 6th century BC China was a bad time politically and socially in China. Leaders had lost their way.  There was a greater emphasis on the people serving the leader instead of being there to support the people and grow a strong community.   Ethics and integrity meant little to the leaders of the time. Confucius was disgusted by this development. At the time, he was a widely unknown teacher. He attempted to revive society by re-introducing the great moral teachings of the past.

At the cornerstone of his teachings was the belief that ethical considerations should be the guiding principle of government. He did not accept the idea of a strict legal system. He believed the primary task of a ruler was to promote the welfare and happiness of the people. The ruler should be a role model, his behavior should be better than everyone else. The leader’s strong ethical behaviors would influence the people's behaviors. Customs and voluntary adherence would be the best way to achieve and maintain an orderly society. Furthermore, he believed leadership should be given to the educated, not the noble.

Confucius never wrote many of the quotations we see today. After his death, many of his disciples gathered and compiled his teachings. Here are a few quotations:

"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves."

"Forget injuries, never forget kindness."

"He who will not economize will have to agonize."

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."

"Respect yourself and others will respect you."

Throughout history, we have seen many teachers influence the world. Jesus, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Buddha, and Confucius have significantly changed the world and redefined the way many of us view right from wrong.

Who are the teachers in your life that have influenced you the most? What qualities do they have that make them an effective and influential teacher? If possible, please provide a couple of your favorite sayings learned from your teachers.

  8. The most influential teacher I know is either Mr. Grant or Mrs. Baccay because Mrs. Baccay tried to prepare us with a lot of homework and Mr. Grant has really good stories and cares more about what we learn. Mr. Grant says "I could give you all F's if I want" and Mrs. Baccay says "This is how much homework you will have in middle school".

  9. The teaches in my life have definitely got to be my grandparents. They have taught me so many things including how to make a fishing fly and how to play chess. In order to be a teacher you have to be an open minded person.

  10. The teachers in my life that have influenced me the most were probably my preschool teachers, and my first grade teacher. My Preschool teachers helped me learn how to be kind to others, and my basics, like the ABC's. My first grade teacher really encouraged me to do my best, and taught me how to read really well. My favorite quote from one of my teachers is,"We call ourselves scholars, because it is funner." It was really funny because she hardly had bad grammar.

  13. The teacher who has influenced me most so far in my life was my old art teacher, Mr. Jay. He always saw the good qualities in me and gave me really good advice on how to improve. At one point, he told me personally that my work was one of the best he had ever seen in his class (and I was only in 3rd grade!). Because of him I was encouraged to continue to strive to get better and better at art. Mr. Jay was very informal, and he was always giving us new techniques to use in our work. He also likes to help us one on one, and get to know us better as individuals. Mr. Jay has really given me courage that I have tons of untapped potential. Sadly, I haven't seen him since third grade, so I cannot quote him.

  14. Some of the teachers that have influenced me most are those who encourage you to always do better, and to try to make learning fun. Apart of this is positive reinforcement, but also handling a situation in the best possible way for optimal results! Some examples of this are: My current teachers, parents, swim coaches, and other family members - even friends!

I don't know any specific sayings, but I know that more then a few times my parents have said, "We're your support team!" Which means a lot to me!

  15. The teachers that have influenced me the most are my parents. They have taught me so much in life including: how to be kind, how to follow the golden rule always, how to be honest and many more things. They are the ones who have raised me to be the person I am today. One of the biggest things they have taught me is how to face defeat and reality. Meaning when I make a mistake they do not say that's is perfectly fine you will do better next time they say get up work harder and do your best. This really helps me because it has made me tough and now I know how to be able to achieve my goals and be successful in life without giving up because I made a mistake. One of my favorite quotes my parents say is, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog." or, "If you think you can, you can and if you think you can't you won't." and last but not least, "Do or do not, there is not try."

My parents help me with anything I need. My teachers at school do a lot of work just so we can get a good education. Teachers at school teach us so much like: math, science, social studies, english, and so much more. My grandparents have been a huge help in my life. They tell me how to be myself, they also have been teaching me Basque. My mom always tells me,"a family that plays together, stays together."

  17. I'd say the teachers in life are my four grandparents. They've told me not to dwell on the past and look toward the future. I've had a lot of family issues but don't think about them anymore. I just leave the past behind and live life now. They've helped me a lot the past couple years. I've lived with both sets and am living with one right now! They've been a great help and have talked me through it. I think I'll be much better off in life with their advice.

  18. In my life I have had some pretty good teachers. The first one was my GT teacher Mrs. Durkson who was a really good teacher. She helped me with tons of good skills like problem solving and working backwards in a problem. She also was one of the teachers I have had that helped me develop my writing skills. My favorite quote from her is "If there is not detail why do it at all". Then in fourth grade my teacher Mr. Dario taught me things like the circuit in a light bulb to how to do a good science fair project. He also told lot of great stories so my favorite quote is "Oh that reminds me of this one time when..." and then he would tell some crazy story. Each of these teachers I really admire and they both taught me a lot.

  19. I have had some great teachers threw out my life so far. One of my favorite teachers probably taught me more about social things, like how to get along with others, than academic things. Some of my teachers are my family, my dad teaches me a lot every day about stuff I do not get and how to be a better person. The best things about teachers is that they never stop teaching you, even if you aren't the smartest or the best listener.

  20. I think that the teacher that have helped me the most is one of my best friends, Sammi. Some people might argue and say that one of your friends can't really be a teacher. I say that they can teach you more than you could have ever learned from someone else. Sammi has been a teacher to me mostly because we've gone through things together. We know what its like to feel like you have no one to turn to, and when we felt that way, we were able to turn to each other. Adults are also really great teachers, but I chose Sammi because I feel like she understands me. We've known each other since kindergarten so she knows the real me and knows exactly what to say and do when I am upset. Through her I learned that you should love everything about yourself and not care what others think. She is funny, caring, compassionate, and creative. There's been times where we went to buy icees at 6:00AM in our pajamas and through that I just learned even more that it doesn't matter what other people think, and your real friends are the people that you can be yourself around. My favroite quote from her is,"Animal cookies are my favorite animal..."

  21. Some of the most influential people in my life have been my coaches. My coaches taught me that even when it hurts, you have to keep going. This applies to much more than just sports though. In life when you are going through hard times, you have to just get through it and then, eventually good will come to you. These people have not only helped me become a good player, but also a good person. There are many qualities that factor into being a good teacher. One of the biggest challenges though is that you have to be willing to give all of your effort to help it may be.

  22. The people in my life that have influencesd me greatly are all of my peers and my parents. My peers have influenced my because I have seen how to treat others respectfully and disrespectivly knowing to treat others respectfully. My parents because they have influenced me right from wrong how to behave, to dress, to eat, to take care of live obects, etc. My peers have never really said any slogans or sayings, except to only on that I remember is "The struggle is real" by Todd Oliver. My parents on the other hand always have a slogan to say and my favorite one is "Two wrongs don't make a right" by who knows. although I have alot of other influencial people in my life, but these are my main influncial people to me.

  23. My most influential teachers in my life are my parents because whenever I make a mistake instead of getting mad at me they teach me how to correct it and what to do the next time. I think that instead of getting mad at me actually helps me learn from my mistake because I find it easier to listen to some one if they're not yelling at me. One thing my dad always says to me is to keep an open mind because you never know whats going to come out of the scenario. It's a lot easier to learn some thing if you're actually keeping an open mind.

  26. In 3rd grade I had a reading teacher who inspired me to read a higher level of reading. Her qualities that I appreciated were that she let us experience things and create them she also had a kind streak that was obvious to everyone. I remember thing that she said that has stuck with me for a long time, good readers always re-read. It isn't super inspirational but it has meaning to it that only her students understand. I would also say my parents are influential towards me. Every teacher has an effect on me as well

  27. The teachers that have influenced me the most would be my brothers and parents. My brothers have set a good example and have taken me under their wing on the path to greatness. I am the youngest of three boys. I have learned from the very few mistakes they have made and followed what they did right. Although I fight with them I still like to learn from them. My parents help me just like Todd said. They have patients to raise me and not get mad. They help me fix my mistakes. I know they will always no matter what. My brother always say never give up no matter what. My parents say try till you get it.

  28. The most influential people I have in my life have to be either my coaches or my parents. My parents are always there for me no matter what I need. They help me with just about everything whether its homework, life skills,or emotional stuff they are always there for me. They teach me so many things that I am grateful I know today. Another big teacher I have in my life is my coaches. They teach me skills to help me achieve in what I do. They also teach me discipline. Another big thing they teach me is how to stay fit in life and never become lazy in what I do. One saying I will always remember is from one of my basketball coach."Play hard, smart, and together."

  29. The teachers that have influeced me the most (sorry mr.Grant) is mrs.Governale. She gets really deep into her conversation and it makes me go deep into the conversation. I think that she describes things very easily fot me to understand and she understands what it is like to be stressful and busy. She is a good teacher because she has an influence voice. She has very respectful characteristics and she is always in a good mood. She knows more about being a student than we do so thats why she always tells us to be thankful for what we have. She always says look ahead instead of looking a=back and regreting what you have already done, because you can't change it so you better learn from it. This are SOME of the reasons mrs.Governale is why she is the best influentiall teacher.

  30. My sister is very inspirational and a great teacher. She has helped me accept who I am and always gives me good advice. Not to mention, she also gets along with everyone, because when she meets people, she always comes with an open heart. Another influential teacher is Mrs. G., like what Becca mentioned above she is always ready for you and knows what position you're in. She is very welcoming and in a great mood. Mrs. G also has a different and inspiration prayer before every class, which is kind of her signature 'quote.'

  35. There are many people in my life that have influenced me. Some of the people that have made an impact are my parents, grandparents, siblings, coaches, teachers, and friends. They have taught me to accept and learn from failure. I have the highest respect for them. Some of the memorable quotes that have had an impact on my life are "you learn and grow more from tough times than good" -Coach Oliver. "Win with class, lose with class" - Coach Lizama. "Baguettes! Baguettes for everyone!" -Caden Dolby.

  36. There are many people in my life who have influenced me and made me the way I am. This long list includes: parents, siblings, teachers at school, friends, grandparents, and even pets. They teach me to love and learn. They are the base for all my beliefs and values. My mom always says to me and all my siblings: "You, are a rock star"

  37. As we are still young, we all have a lot of people who we call influential, and a good role-model. The influential people in my life all put a piece into my personalities and qualities. For instance, I play tennis. My Mom played on Boise High's tennis team, and got to the state finals many times. She has influenced me to play tennis, and I have gotten good since my mom motivates me for doing it. I also like to play golf, because of my dad. He always influences me to get better. My grandparents always motivate my, and influence me by taking me fly fishing, so I can do better at that too. Teachers are a big chunk of pieces though. For some reason they influence me to try harder, giving us tips every day on how to have a successful life. Most of all, God and Jesus influence my faith. By helping me everyday, and showing me the light, They show me how to be a good person, and how to respect my God. They teach me the right thing, and wait for me to one day come to heaven. Overall, I have many role models, and as I get older, I find more pieces to put in my puzzel of attitudes, personalities, and feelings.

  38. To me my parents are my best teachers. They taught me my basic fundamentals such as getting along with others, speech, and social skills. To be a great teacher you must be kind, but not strict, and compassionate. You must also be willing to sacrifice somethings and be fine about it. Teachers show us the way to a great life, and to a great education. Some great sayings I have learned are: Treat others as you want to be treated, and you get what you get and don't throw a fit.

The qualities my parents have game me are treating people good espicially people that are older than me, helping me go the right path in life, and always help me when i may need help. "If you want it you will always do your best"

  40. Mrs.Marcus is one teacher that's important to me. In kindergarten, I was a little confused in the first few weeks of my first year of school. She helped me through it, always telling me where to go and tips to remember things and places in the school. My parents are also pretty big, I guess. Mr. Yanci is always telling us funny stories and stuff. Mr.Russel has candy and Khan prizes that she gives out. And Mr.Grant has a meter stick.

  41. The teachers that really influenced me the most are my parents because since my first day of school until now my parents have taught me so much about my life and they try to show good deeds and inspiring quotes or videos to my brothers and I to show what life is going to bring you.
