Summer 2014

Welcome back to school.  I can only imagine many of you feel as through the summer went by way too quickly and are stunned to think we are back in school for another 9 months.  While it may have seemed to go by at the speed of light, this has been an incredible summer for world news.  Here are some highlights:

The Ongoing Issues in Ukraine
Not a week can go by without another incident concerning the ongoing border dispute between the Russians and the Ukraine.  This dispute has not only resulted in the constant threat of military actions, but on July 17th 283 passengers tragically lost their lives when flight MH17 was shot out of the sky.  The United States and European countries have issued numerous sanctions against Russia, but with little effect to date.

The World Cup

Brazil hosted the world’s largest sporting event.  The FIFA World Cup was held between June 12th and July 13th.  The attendance and viewers from all over the world was phenomenal.  In the end the men from Germany defeated the Argentineans to host the cup for the fourth time in the history of the tournament.

Trouble in Israel

Beginning July 8th, the Israeli military and the Hamas have been engaged in an ongoing conflict.  The conflict
continues to escalate and the casualties continue to rise as neither side is able to find a reasonable resolution.  One of the great tragedies of the conflict is the loss of the lives of civilians caught in the middle of this war zone.  The Egyptian government has been working diligently with both sides to enact ceasefires to provide civilian aid, but with limited success.  The latest ceasefire is set to expire at midnight August 18, 2014.

Iraqi ISIS

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been working to create a militant Islamic state at the expense of religious minority groups in the region.  ISIS has been working to rid the area of Sunni Muslims and Yazidi.  The acts committed against these minority groups have prompted the United States to attempt to provide humanitarian aid.

Racial Tension in Missouri

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, MO.  Michael
Brown was unarmed, but according to reports Brown assaulted the officer.  The candlelight vigil held the next evening turned into a riot claiming 30 injuries.  As more information and action is taken, the community continues to struggle with the relationship between law enforcement and the people they are to protect.

These are just a sample of the many news stories from the summer of 2014.  In your opinion what was the biggest news story from the summer and why?  You can choose from one of the items above or whatever other news stories captured your attention.  What types of news stories are you more likely to pay attention to?  What about these stories interests you?

  1. I think for the past couple weeks or so the biggest news story has been the racial tension in Missouri because it's a repeat offense or repeat situation where it gets a lot of attention but keeps happening. I pay more attention to the tragic news because it's some of the only news that the reporters deem "newsworthy". Not many happy news stories hit the tv.

  2. Sport stories like the World Cup interest me because I like sports. The reason I chose this is because it happens only every four years, and more people watch it than the Super Bowl. However, I am not a fan of soccer. I am happy for Germany that they won the World Cup. I wanted Argentina to win because they are a good team. Welcome back everyone.

  4. I think that the biggest story of the summer was Ukraine and Russia fighting over borders. I think this is a big story because if the Europeans try to help Ukraine, they risk loosing Russia as their energy supplier. I think that if Russia really wanted to take over more area from Ukraine, they would because they have a big army. I pay more attention to sport stories stories because I like to play sports. I am interested in these stories because they are world wide.

  5. I honestly think the ongoing issues with Russia invading Ukraine was the biggest issue of summer 2014. Though I enjoy watching the World Cup, Countries who are in trouble come before countries playing soccer. I understand the trouble in Missouri, and it is #2 on my list because all men and women are created equal, but one state is a small chunk of Ukraine.

  6. A news story that caught my attention was the World Cup. I like international stories the best. The reason that the world cup caught my attention was because it was action packed; Germany beat Brazil 7-1 in the semis!

  7. For me, the biggest news story this summer has been the tension between the Russians and Ukraine. It's horrible to thinks that so many people have lost their lives over this dispute. I also payed a lot of attention to Robin Williams' death. He was so funny, and he brought a lot of laughter into many peoples lives, yet he couldn't bring it into his own. I usually pay attention to stories that are a little more happy, because war and death just makes me sad. But, there doesn't seem to be any very happy stories lately! Happier stories, like soldier coming home, or dogs rescued from canals, tend to interest me more because they make you feel happy for those people, and it brightens up your day.

  8. One of the news story's I payed attention to was the World Cup and Robbin Williams death. Soccer is my favorite sport so of course I watched to World Cup and Robbin Williams was in some of my favorite movies. I was surprised at how he died. I like to watch the news and scan threw the news paper especially when I see something interesting.

  9. In my personal opinion, I think that Robin William's death was the most 'appealing', I don't mean that in a good way. He was such a known figure in the United States, and the story unfolding on what was going on in his life. I found it more intriguing because it was in the United States, and it was a figure that I knew. Most of the time, when the actors/actresses on TV's death is announced, they acted in the 30's or 40's, and since I wasn't born in that era, I'm not familiar with them. But when someone that you actually know dies, then it becomes more shocking; especially since he's not really old. Though, I don't think that was the most 'shocking' or 'devastating' event, while it was still very horrible. I think that the ISIS story was probably the most unnerving for me, and they need to be stopped immediately.

I'm most attracted to the stories that I can relate with, and that happen within this country. Some of the concepts or events in other countries seem foreign, and even alien. But when something happens in your own country, it has a larger impact on you. Additionally, problems that I truly have an 'opinion' or have somehow participated in an event related to the incident.

  10. I personally thought that the most appealing story was the Racial Tension in Missouri. I thought that the Racial Tension in Missouri was the most interesting because 18 year old Michael Brown was unarmed, but yet he was shot and killed by the police officer Darren Wilson. The day of the killing Michael had robbed a convenience store. Darren claims that he was stopping Brown from walking in the middle of the street, and that he had no idea about the robbery Michael had just made. Then when Wilson went to search for weapons, that he was violently confronted. On the other and an eye-witness said that when Michael had his hands in the air when Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown twice. I am more interested in true, dramatic, and reality stories. Drama, true, and reality stories appeal to me because they are what is actually happening in the world, showing you that the world is not perfect!

  11. I think the biggest news was the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in May. Since he was from Sun Valley my mom was very interested in this story and so was I. I also was sad about the death of Robin Williams. It is so sad that someone would take their own life even if they were going to die soon.

  12. In my opinion I thought that the best news story was the Racial Tensions story. But my favorite news stories are the ones about mystery, drama, and crime because that kind of stuff catches my attention. They catch my attention because I find them interesting, whereas I find stories about war and politics etc. boring.

  13. This summer I payed most attention to to the World Cup. I found this most interesting because I like how all of the countries got together to compete. I also kept watch on the scores and who was still in. Other than this I payed attention to stories that involved people who have gone missing because they really make me want to keep watching.

  14. I think the biggest story of the summer was the racial tensions in Ferguson, Missouri because it is interesting to hear stories from bystanders and police officers. By hearing multiple sides of the story, we know somewhere in between lies the truth, which is usually hard to determine. I also find stories about what is going on in other countries very interesting. By watching stories about other countries I always learn something interesting about the place.

  15. I personally thought that the disputes between the Russians and the Ukrainians. I am so confused why the leaders would go to such strong military action over some seemingly small dispute over the boarder. If I where a leader of one of these countries I wouldn't in danger some of the inhabitants of my country. I know that life is very different in other countries, but I just don't understand how some people can be so careless with life. I like news stories that are international. They make me feel like I'm not in the dark and well informed.
