Your Name

How important is your name?  Where did it come from?  What does it say about you?  Would it be hard to believe your life course may be set by your family surname or by the first decision made for you when you were born?  Research has shown based on your name, you may be predisposed to choose a certain profession.

Our names are held sacred.  Being a person with an alternative spelling for my first name, I am hyper-sensitive to people pronouncing and spelling it correctly.  Additionally, I am overcome with embarrassment if I mispronounce or misspell anyone’s name.  It is something we own and something we are proud of.  It is the first thing we are given and it stays with us wherever we go.

Your name can have a significant impact on those you meet even before you open your mouth.  Most often unfairly, you are judged by your name.  Researchers have polled employers on their impressions of potential candidates based solely on their name.  The name “John” for instance, creates the impression of someone who is wholesome and dependable.

In addition to creating an immediate impression, your name may also indicate your future career choice.  A Wall Street Journal article from June 21, 2011 cites a controversial study conducted by State University of New York in Buffalo which claims people are more likely to choose a profession with names that are similar the their own.  While this may seem preposterous, it is hard to argue with:

Dr. Douglas Hart – cardiologist
Sue Yoo – lawyer
Cory Greathouse – realtor
Patricia Boguslawski – lawyer
Dr. Payne – orthodontist

Even if your name does not have to do with your profession, it may provide you advantages in other ways.  Simply ask Mr. Will Wynn, winner of the Austin, TX mayoral campaign from 2003 through 2009 if you would like additional evidence.

Where did you get your name?   Based on your name, what would be your ideal profession?  Regardless of name, what do you want to do professionally in the future?

  2. I don't think my name came from anywhere, my sister just thought of it when I was born. Based on my name, I would probably be a otolaryngologist(nose doctor). I want to be a doctor in an interesting field when I grow up, but I'm not sure which one yet.

  3. My name came from my dad looking at a hockey helmet and the brand was Cooper. Well, Cooper means barrel maker so I guess that that would be my ideal job. But I would rather be in a real estate type of interesting field like that.

  7. My mom and dad had always wanted a son even before my sisters were born. Every time my mom was pregnant my dad would say here comes Isaiah and it turned out to be a girl three times. When my mom was pregnant the fourth time they said if it isn't a boy then they would stop having kids. My name means salvation of the Lord. So I guess my ideal job would be a youth ministry leader. I want to be anything that involves tough physical labor when I grow up.

There is no profession linked with my name. I want to play basketball professionally when I grow up. My ultimate goal is to declare for the 2021 NBA draft.

  11. My mom and dad liked the name Nicholas, so that is why they named me Nicholas. It did not really come from anything special. St. Nicholas, is the patron saint of many things, including sailors. there for I may be a sailor when I grow up. When I grow up even though I know there is absolutely no way I could do it, I want to play in the NBA.

  12. I got my name from my parents. I was either going to be a "Grace" or a "Zoe" and when I was born my parents thought that I didn't look like a "Grace" so they named me "Zoe", which means "Life" in Greek. Based on my name, my ideal profession would be a zoologist or a job that has something to do with animals. I want to be a physician or a physician's assistant, and if I'm not that, then something to do in the medical field.

  13. I got my name from my parents. They liked the name 'Grace', so I was named that. I was born first, so maybe that had something to do with it. 'Grace' means the love and mercy God gave us. Based on my name, my ideal profession would probably be a nun or a teacher. Regardless of my name, I want to be a surgeon (or anything in the medical field) or a marine biologist in the future.

  14. I got my name from my parents. They both loved the name Emily and thought it was very original… It was converted from the Latin name Amelia meaning "striving or rival," to Emily. That must mean that my name means "to be striving or rival." Based on that information, my ideal job must be a job requiring the worker to be striving. I guess that would mean I would become a teacher or a military woman. Regardless of my name, I would want to be a doctor who delivers babies (or someone in the medical field) or a famous photographer who takes pictures of the ocean and its life (or someone famous for something).

  15. I as well as most most people got my name from my parents. Before I was born my parents decided to name e either "Abigail" or "Story". My dad the the name Story was fun and original. They then got to thinking and thought about how crazy my life would have been, mostly because of all the kids making jokes like, "Hey Story! Wanna read a story?" The name Abigail means "Father's Joy or Father Rejoices". Based on my name my profession would be a a missionary or nun... When I grow up, (even though it most likely wont happen) I want to be an Olympic Volleyball player both indoor and beach.

  22. I got my name from my mom's grandma (my great-grandma) because my mom aspired to her. Cecilia comes from the Latin word caecus which means blind (which is weird because I am!) And Cecilia also means music- derived from Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Catherine -my middle name- means... ready for it? ... PURE! So I would probably be an ophthalmologist, music teacher, saint, nun, or teacher. As for my actual dream job- I want to be a unicorn! If that doesn't work out I have NO IDEA what I will be when I grow up. Zilch, Zero, None

  31. My parents named me "Lauren" just because they liked the name. "Lauren" is considered a biblical name so I guess I would probably be a nun or at teacher. But I really wanna go into politics when I'm older. Before I do that though, I wanna serve as a pilot for helicopters in the army. Besides presidents usually serve before they go into presidency. :) That's my dream: to be president one day...

  33. My parents were going to name me Piper (an aircraft company) or Pearl (Pearl Harbor) because those are both associated with airplanes and my dad is a pilot. They named me Riley because at the time, there weren't many girls named Riley-so they wanted something special and new. They made my middle name Lauren because of the same reason-they wanted something fresh and new that was not in my family. I don't really know what jobs would be associated with the name Riley, but I want to get my pilot's license before the age of 18-that's my goal. After my piloting career is over, I would love to be a photographer or an oceanographer. I have always liked taking pictures and the ocean.

  34. My parents named me Isabella after the Queen of Spain. My middle name is Rose. My parents wanted my middle name to be associated with my family and to be named after someone in the family so they named me Rose (that was my Grandmas name). I don't know what jobs would be associated with my name. I have always loved dancing and performing on the stage with approximately 5,000 people watching me, but I am not sure that's something I want to do for a living. I would love to be a doctor or a nurse , but I really don't like the sight of blood. I have always loved the feeling of helping someone and I think If I could same someone's life that would be one of the coolest thing ever!!!!!!
