March
has been designated as Women’s History Month.
The Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the National
Archives and Records Administration, the National Park Service and other
government agencies have partnered in paying tribute to the past and present
women who have done so much to shape and progress our world.
This year’s theme is “Women’s Education – Courage, Character
and Commitment”. As we have talked in
class, education is the key to all future success. Whether it is developing a nation, building a
community or empowering a group of people, with education anything is
possible. Without education life is not
only difficult, but obstacles can be immoveable. Education is the key to freedom from whatever
holds you back. This insight was not always
so obvious.
While
women have always made significant contributions to our country, it is not
surprising to me that as more women are entering and completing college that we
are seeing more and more women in high profile positions. This is the first generation with more women
enrolled in college than men. This is
truly incredible when you consider social bias against higher education for
women was dominant until the 1970’s. Up
through the 1970’s college majors and degrees were often limited to your
gender, whether that be through actual college requirements or societal
pressure. Today, women are afforded the same
opportunities as men.
Much of the progress can be attributed to Title IX
legislation. Title IX prohibits gender
discrimination by any institute receiving federal funds. Title IX provides equal access to education,
facilities, and scholarships to women.
In addition to academics, women’s participation in athletics has
increase by 900% in high school and 450% in collegiate activities. The impact has been incredible.
What women stand out to you as making significant
contributions to our country and why?
What do you think of Title IX and its impact? In your lifetime, what “firsts” do you think
you will see from women?
I think Michelle Obama has made a huge contribution to our country because she has helped kids that are over weight live a healthy life and to get the right amount of exercise. I think that title 9 should always be a law and that it has helped women raise their self esteem. I think I will see the first woman president.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mrs.Obama because she has cut down the percent of obese people in the U.S. The Title IX is good because it unifies all of the genders. I think that I will see a lady president
ReplyDeleteI really don't know I don't like being mean or anything but I don't like the Idea of Mrs.Obama or Mr.Obama running the country just me and the most important women to all men should be there daughter or wife. I think its good because it will give women a chance to make more differences. Being president or any thing that unpredictable.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of any recent major feats of a woman that make me stare in awe. The title 9 was a great law and should stay how it is. Gender discrimination is horrible and title 9 is a perfect way to prevent it. I think there will be a woman president in my lifetime but more importantly the gap between male and female income will be disbanded. After all woman aren't any less capable.
ReplyDeleteTwo Words : Eleanor Roosevelt. What an amazing woman. The longest serving first lady, she helped the president and her country by being out in the community serving the poor and needy. I think the Title IX was a step in the correct direction for preventing gender discrimination, even if we are a long way from it.
ReplyDeleteI FOUND THIS QUOTE- Somewhere out in this audience may even be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps, and preside over the White House as the President's spouse. I wish him well! Barbara Bush, First Lady
HERE'S TO THE LADIES! CHEERS!
I think that Mrs. Obama really helped our country. She reduced the obesity rate in the U.S. The title IX is great and helps women reach their goals and dreams. I think I will see the first woman president in my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI think of Susan B. Anthony. She was so amazing to go against what everyone said and fight for women's rights. It has made the world change in many ways. I personally believe that Title IX is an amazing step forward for women and what we stand for as a group. I believe that I will get the chance to see the first women to take office as the president. I hope that I might even be the one to take that large step for women.
ReplyDeleteAmelia Earhart made an immense contribution to our country. She was the first woman to make a nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. Amelia was a brave, daring, determined woman who wanted to prove to everyone that women can do anything that men can do. After flying as a passenger across the Atlantic, she wanted to try to fly by herself. And so she did. But she wanted to achieve something more- which was flying around the world. Five years later, she flew to Hawaii with a fellow pilot, but lost control at takeoff. So the plane had to be taken to the factory for repairs. Three months after that, she went to Miami to try to fly around the world again, but with a different navigator. She left behind important communication and navigation instruments, but for some reason that people don't know of. Maybe to make addendum room for extra fuel for the long flight. They made it to New Guinea in twenty-one days, even though Amelia was tired and ill. For the next leg of the trip, they departed New Guinea for Howland Island, a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That was the last time Amelia and her navigator communicated with a nearby Coast Guard ship. They were never heard from again. The U.S. Navy made a massive search for the pair for more than two weeks, but they were never found. Different people have reasons for why they went missing, such as they got lost and ran out of fuel, then simply died. Even though they weren't able to come back from their long journey around the world, Americans still remember Amelia Earhart as an ambitious women who had a dream like so many others to change this world, and to prove that women had just as much an opportunity to accomplish anything just as much as men did. After all her hard work and effort, she made her point clear for everyone around the world to see. I think Title IX is great because it gives women more opportunities to grow and become important people in the world, even though men tend to have more opportunities. I think we will have the first woman to walk on Mars or be the first woman president.

DeleteI think that Mrs. Obama has done a lot while she has been first lady. She has decreased the amount of obese people in our society and has helped improved the amount of healthy foods in schools for kids. Having the Title IX is great because it has taken a step in the right direction againt gender descrimination. In my life time I think that I will see the first woman president and Even the first woman to walk on Mars.
ReplyDeleteThe first women who comes to my mind when I think of someone who makes great contributions to our country is Mrs. Obama. She has helped so many obese children start consuming healthy diets and getting the right amount of exercise. She has made sure that schools offer healthier foods and portions. She has massively decreased the children obesity rate in America. The Title IX is great because it is helping women be treated with the same dignity as men. Personally, I hope it helps women get paid the same as men when they work just as hard. In my lifetime I think I will get to see the fist women president.
ReplyDeleteI think Amelia Earhart made quite a few contributions to our country. She was the first women to fly over the Atlantic Ocean by herself, and if it weren't for her, there would be very few, if any, female pilots.
ReplyDeleteTitle IX is great, because my mom said that before Title IX existed, women had to raise their own money to do things in sports like travel to a tournament while men would have nice busses, nice hotel rooms, all the good stuff was just handed to them.
I think that in my lifetime, I'll see the first female president. That would be awesome.
I think Mrs. Obama has done a lot to help drop the obese percentage and help get better food into schools. Title IX is fantastic to have because it is always helping equal the genders. I think it is cool how they help with education and other important things like jobs and being paid an equal amount.I think this generation would see our first women president.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Obama has done a great deal of contributions to our country. She has helped kids get healthier meals and bodies. She has also helped decreased the percentage of obese people in the United States. I think having the tile IX is good because it includes both genders and is not discriminating against a gender. In my life I want to see the first woman president.
ReplyDeleteThe person that comes to mind is Amelia Earhart. She was the first women to fly a plane over the Atlantic Ocean by herself, and she inspired many females to become pilots. If she didn't fly over the Atlantic, I don't think we would have any female pilots. I think the Title IX is great. It provides equal access to education and many other things for both genders. In my lifetime, I want to see the first female president.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mrs. Obama has done many great things for this country. She has helped obesity decrease and has many alternates in food and ways to get exercise. I think that the title IX is great it mixes and unifies both genders. I want to see a woman president.
ReplyDeleteI think that there are three women that stand out: Hillary Clinton, Sally Ride, and Malala Yousafzai. Hilary Clinton was not only a First Lady during which she fought for universal health care, but also an attorney, and an advocate for women’s rights. She encourages other women to involve themselves in politics, and to chase their dreams. She was President Obama’s Secretary of State, and now may be running for president. Sally Ride was the first American woman in space. She says, “There are no limits to what we can achieve.” Malala, even after being shot, still fights for the right for girls to be able to go to school. She is determined to make girls equal by giving them a right to education. Those women have done great things, and have influenced millions of people. l I think that what Title IX is doing is great. It is giving women an equal chance in life; allowing them to accomplish their goals in life. In my lifetime, I believe that I will see a woman president, and more women than men in the Senate.
ReplyDeleteI think Mother Teresa really inspired not only the U.S. but the Catholic community as a whole. She is really famous for her love and compassion for out casted people. I think it is good that Title IX has provided equal opportunities for both genders and that everybody should have those chances. I think that in our lifetime there will be a woman as the president of the United States.
ReplyDeleteI think of Mrs. Obama, Amelia Airheart and Rosa Parks. They all have done a lot in showing that women are important too. Rosa Parks for standing up and showing that black people are equal, showing so much confidence. Amelia Airheart being the first woman to fly and going to new heights. Even though she was lost in a plane crash she still is very much remembered. Mrs. Obama for helping poor families get healthier meals and kids that can't afford lunch have lunch. I think Title IX will do wonderful things by showing that men and women are equal in every way. I think I will see more woman presidents and more woman leaders. More organizations by woman bound to help others in need or struggling with abuse, poverty, or mental/physical health problems.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Obama is a huge role on me she is helping kids all around the world to eat right and stay healthy. Also she is helping kids to know that if they have a dream they can achieve it no matter what life throws at them. I think the impact that it has on the world is huge. It has given more and more women a chance to do more things and not be so limited. I want to be the first women to ever play in the NBA.
ReplyDeleteKylee, I love how you have aspirations of being the first women in the NBA. I am a person that supports women's rights and think they deserve as much as men in this community. It would be my goal to bring the credibility and national attention of the WNBA up to an equal playing field that the NBA receives. Personally I would love all athletics to become a co-ed playing field but as I see in the future that is unlikely to happen. Kylee I see so much potential in you. You might be able to bring fame to women's sports and to the sport of basketball. Then one day maby your dream and my dream can come true
DeleteMrs. Obama is doing alot of good things to this country. Also she is helping kids to know that if they have a dream they can achieve it no matter what life throws at them. I think the impact that it has on the world is huge. Women are huge and they I think need to be respected more.
ReplyDeleteSerena Williams is ranked the best tennis player in the world, and is helping kids get outside be active and have fun at tennis. It's a great way to help people and have fun at it. The IX is great it's made a huge impact for people who wanted to play sports, couldn't, and now they can. Not to mention a greater impact on education is amazing as we all know education is the basis of development in every country. Going to the, moon more extreme sports, and most of all have equal rights with men. I support all of this evolution and women getting more freedom.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of women who have changed the United States and the world, I think of the women authors, especially J.K. Rowling and Susan Collins. These women have created amazing books that can take you into a whole different world. The books they wrote let your imagination run wild and take you to places you would have never gone without these books. I think Title IX has made a huge impact to everyone's lives and should continue to go on throughout the world. I think there will soon be a woman president and more women going to the moon and exploring.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the women I think Mrs. Obama because she has done so much for or country already. The Title IX is a great idea because it makes all the women around the world notified and stand out.
ReplyDeleteThe womb that stands out to me that kind of sapped our country is Rosa Parks. Rosa stood up for herself because she knew what was right. I think that Title IX is a great thing. their needs to be equality through all of our schools. Its impact is huge. It gives women the opportunity to compete more and have fun. In my lifetime, I think that I will see the first woman president.
ReplyDeleteyou meant woman.(:
DeleteWhat evs man you dont need to judge people on spelling like you do basketball.
DeleteOut of lots of women to choose from I think Mrs. Obama is great because she has encouraged and helped kids worldwide to eat better and stay healthy. The impact that she has on the world is very big. Also the impact of IX is amazing and I really like this idea because it encourages equality and stops descrimination.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mrs.Obama with her play 60 campaign has helped a lot of Americas obese kids. The law IX is a great way for women to build their self esteem so I think it should stay. I think that I will see the First Lady president or the First Lady Vice President
ReplyDeleteI think that Rosa Parks stood out and Olympic athletes stand out to me because they had to work so hard to get to where they wanted to be and had to wait such a long time to be in the Olympics. The law IX give us such a good reason to appreciate women equally because at a time women were not treated the same way as men.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of women who have made significant contributions to our country, I think of Rosa Parks. She helped start black americans have the same rights as white people. Rosa helped make people realize that blacks were the exact same as white people and they shouldn't be treated different. Title IX is great. It has a huge impact on people who wanted to play sports but couldn't and now they can. It shows that women are just as equal as men. In my lifetime, I think there will be the first women president.
ReplyDeleteI think that a woman that has impacted this country is Mrs. Obama. She has brought the obesity rate down, and taught kids how to eat healthy. I really think that the Title 9 is a great idea. It is a great way to show that woman have the same opportunities in sports as men due. Woman try just as hard in sports as men due there for they should be treated with the same amount as luxury in sports as men due. (Nice locker rooms, nice courts) I think that I will be alive when the first woman president is elected.
ReplyDeleteI think a woman that has impacted this country is Mrs. Obama. She has helped the obesity rate down and help kids live healthier. Title IX is a great idea. Woman are usually looked down on and looked at as weak and fragile. Woman can do anything men can do, but people don't realize that. Woman have made a huge impact on everyday life because they are the people that do lots of behind the senes stuff like: cleaning, washing, cooking, and more. Woman can do more than this. People like Mrs. Obama, Amellia Airheart, Messi, and J.K Rowling influence peoples life everyday. Weather it is picking up a good book or eatings a healthy school lunch, or flying on a plane, or playing a sport.
ReplyDeleteI think that Rosa Parks has impacted our country so much. She stood up for what she believed in, and she was very brave to do that. Title IX is definitley a great idea. Like Welles said, women are usually looked down on because we "can't do what men can do' and "we aren't strong', but that is not true. Women can do whatever men can. Women really impact our society ion a great way, but people don't understand that sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of women that have impacted the world in some way, I think of athletes and authors. Most people would think that sports are more for men than women, and writing is for men also. None of that is true, and I admire anyone from Mia Hamm to J.K. Rowling. Title XI shows that women can do just as much as men can do, and shows everyone that all genders are equal. I think I will see the first women president in my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteThe woman in our country that have changed the world today is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks stood up for what was right because she knew what was right. I think Title IX was a very good idea and to get all men and woman equal in sports and in education. In my lifetime I think I will see the first ever woman president.
