March 2nd marks the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s
birthday. While it may seem trivial to
celebrate an author of children’s books, it is hard to imagine what life would
be like without the influence of The Cat
in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham.
Now that you are older I can imagine you may have lost an
appreciation for the genius of Dr. Seuss and his work. But as you watch the number of first graders
and kindergarteners walking around looking like Thing 1 and Thing 2, it is
difficult to deny the cultural and educational impact his work has had on
society.
A couple of years ago, in addition to celebrating his
birthday, a movie based on one of his books, “The Lorax” was released. While it seems like a simple, enjoyable
children’s story, it is also a political and social statement by Dr. Seuss
concerning the over industrialization of our world and the fear of losing our
natural resources. Dr. Seuss often used
his stories to not only entertain and engage children in reading, but provide
insight into the world for the parents reading the books. One of the most gifted books at high school
graduation is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
It’s not so subtle message about how to live your life, through the good
times and the bad is extremely relevant to people entering into new phases of
their lives.

I did read Dr.Suess when i was kid but i was really young because once i started reading I read more advanced book instead of Dr.Suess.Green eggs and ham is my favorite because when we read that in class in kindergarten we had green eggs and ham for lunch. I don"t think i learned any life lessons from Dr.Suess Maybe i learned to have a creative imagination. It really shows what kind of school we are and that we appreciate Dr. Seuss.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was read the Green Eggs and Ham book multiple times when I was little and I loved it! I loved it because it was so silly and the rhymes were really hard to read. The life lessons that I learned from that book was that never quit at doing anything just like Sam I Am did not when the grumpy guy would not try the eggs and ham to save his life. I think that it is great to recognize an amazing artist such as Dr. Sues.

ReplyDeleteI used read many Dr. Seuss books when I was little. My favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham because I loved to read so many words that rhymed with each other. I learned about issues in the world like over industrialization and losing our natural resources, diversity in all people of the world, and the fun of being a kid. I think it's fun to see the little kids celebrating his birthday with hats that they make or when they draw black whiskers on their cheeks. They all look so excited and that they're having fun.
ReplyDeleteI always read Dr.Seuss because he is arguable the best author in the world. I love al of his stories. My favorite is cat in the hat. I learned that you should never be down and try to make others happy and make sure they have a good day. I think it is good that the younger kids get to celebrate Dr. Suess's birthday. It motivates little kids to read.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did all the time my dad loved to read them to me all the time. I always enjoy reading "And To Think That's What I Saw On Mulberry Street." I thought it was hilarious that a boy was making up these crazy things about what he saw to tell to his dad. I learned that you shouldn't lie you should always tell the truth. I think how it's funny when they make their Dr. Seuss' hat from Cat In The Hat. I love seeing how happy it makes people to read these funny and teachable lessons and enjoy learning about it because its so cool.
ReplyDeleteYes, Ioved reading Dr. Seuss when I was a little kid and I still love reading his books. My favorite book by Dr. Seuss was Green Eggs and Ham. I liked this book because it had lots of ryming words. The life lesson I learned was live while your young because you will never get that moment again.I think it's good that the little kids celebrate his birthday because he is a very good writer for little kids and he made my childhood more fun.
ReplyDeleteYes I did. My favorite Dr. Suess book is the Lorax because it was a funny and I thought that all the little animals in the book were so cute. I learned that we need to stay strong in tough situations, live life to the fullest, always laugh and have fun, and to keep of environment healthy and living. I think it's a good idea for the little kids because it helps them to appreciate him more and have fun reading all the stories.
ReplyDeleteYes, I loved reading Dr. Suess books, and my favorite one was Cat in the Hat. I loved that book because I loved the cat and how funny he was, and I watched the movie a lot, too. I think that the lessons in his books are to laugh, have fun, and be creative. I think it is great that the kids celebrate his birthday because it really helps them to live a kid life while they are kids.
ReplyDeleteYes Dr. Seuss books were my favorite! My favorite is the Oh,the Places You'll Go!. This is my favorite because I thought it was funny when I was a child. I learned that you can do anything and go anywhere and that you'll find the right places in life. I think that it is very cool that little kids now get enjoy the awesome books of Dr. Seuss.
ReplyDeleteYes, my favorite book by Dr. Seuss was Green Eggs and Ham. I think I liked it because at my old school, we got green eggs and green ham for lunch on Dr. Seuss Day. I didn't really learn any life lessons from them, and I was probably only reading them for fun. I think that it's cool to have a Dr. Seuss day, even though most young kids don't understand the life lesson in his books.
ReplyDeleteThe Foot Book and Green Eggs and Ham were my absolute favorites! But I loved the Cat in the Hat also (probably because it was one of my very first books.) I know that I learned something from those books. Dr. Seuss has a special place in my memory collection. Memories include: my dad laughing and teaching us silly things as he read to my sister and me as we cuddle under the covers giggling, sometimes reading to him, and asking questions about characters. If you had to ask my sister, her favorite would probably have been the Buttered Bread Battle because we would have to take turns reading the pages as one person after another had their tongue twisted into knots. THANK YOU DOCTOR SEUSS!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite dr. Suess book was always Hop on Pop. It taught me that even thought my dad let me hop on him, he disliked it. I will always remember that at the ending of the book it said " Ask me tommorow but not today". I still don't fully understand what it means but I have lived my life by it all these years. I think it is great that the younger kids celebrate his birthday with crafts and other fun activities and read his books. If you were able to grow up reading his books your childhood was definetly awesome.

ReplyDeleteI loved all of the Dr. Seuss books, but my favorite was probably Horton Hears A Who. It sort of taught me that even though a person may be different, wether in height, skin color, or anything, they are still a person. It is a very true statement that "A person's a person, no matter how small." I love it when young kids celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday and walk around with plates of green eggs and ham and wear the Cat in the Hat's hat. Dr. Seuss was and incredible man, who wrote incredible books. He was amazing. Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!
ReplyDeleteI did read Dr. Seuss books when I was a kid. My favorite was probably One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. I especially liked this book because of all the rhymes and how each word in the book sounded like another word. Some life lessons that I learned were that no matter what age you are, you can still have fun and do some dare-devil things. Also, that even if you don't like the situation you're in right now, it will eventually get better. I love to see the younger kids with the Dr. Seuss hats on and hear them reciting lines to his books. I like how they realize how good of a writer Dr. Seuss is by acting like characters in his books for a day or two. Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!!
ReplyDeleteGreen Eggs and Ham and The Lorax were my absolute favorite. I know that I learned something from those books. Dr. Seuss has a special place in my memory. The life lesson I learned was to just live to the fullest because you may never have that moment again. ReplyDeleteYes, my parents used to read them to me all the time. My favorite one would probably have to be Go, Dog, Go. I think the reason that book sticks out is because the characters are dogs. Also in the book there is a part that says “do you like my hat,” and after my parents would read the book to me, they would always ask me if I liked their hat. I don’t think when I was little that I was thinking about life lessons in the story; but going back they teach you to be nice, and respectful to each other. I enjoyed reading them because they are just funny. I like that the younger kids are celebrating his birthday. He was a great author with funny, good stories that should always be remembered.
ReplyDeleteYes I loved Dr. Seuss when I was a kid I loved the T.V. shows the books and the movies. My favorite book is Cat in the hat because of thing one and thing two. They remind of My brothers and I except that there are four things not two. It told me loud and clear you only live one so live life like their is no tomorrow. I think instead of a day it should be a week.
ReplyDeleteYes… Dr. Seuss was my favorite author ever when I was a kid. I liked the book Green eggs and ham because I was kind of a picky eater and didn't like to eat much as a kid, but as soon as I read that book, some of my thoughts about food definitely changed. I think it is great that younger kids get to celebrate his birthday because it may help them find books of all kind written by Dr. Seuss. (AKA, the best children author in my opinion).
ReplyDeleteI loved reading Dr. Seuss as a kid and still enjoy picking one up and reading it. My favorite was The Cat in the Hat. I really didn't learn that many life lessons reading these books mostly cause I loved the illustrations so much. I think its a great idea to teach kids about Dr. Seuss and celebrate his birthday, because after all, he is one of the best children's authors of all time.
ReplyDeleteI was read Dr. Seuss books when I was younger. My favorite book is Horton Hears a Who and The Butter Battle Book. I really like all the characters in these stories and they are really entertaining. I leaned from reading The Butter Battle Book that it does't matter if people have a different opinion than you, everyone is different. From Horton Hears a Who, I learned that you should listen to the smallest people or the outcasts. They can change the world and they do have a voice. I think its great that the kids celebrate his birthday. He wrote many good books for children and they have good life lessons.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved the Dr. Seuss books! My favorite book was probably Horton Hears a Who and Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? I loved all the rhymes and crazy plots. When I was younger, they were so easy to read which made me very proud of myself when I would finish a book. Horton Hears A Who taught me to give everyone a chance to talk. I learned that it was important to listen to even the smallest people because they were also important. Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You(?) didn't really teach me anything, it just loved the funny rhymes and jokes. I think it is great that kids celebrate his birthday. Almost everyone's early childhood consisted of some books from Dr. Seuss.
ReplyDeleteI love Dr. Seuss books! I think my favorite was Green Eggs and Ham because it taught me that if you try something that you think you will hate, you may come to learn that you love it. It also taught me to push myself out of my comfort zone. I also loved the Dr. Seuss books because of the illustrations. I remember tuning my mom out when she was reading one to me and just looking at the illustrations and thinking about what it would be like living in that world. I think that celebrating Dr. Seuss's is a key part in actually having a childhood. I'm sure lots of people remember when they were little and coming home with one of those cat-in-the-cat hats on. I know I remember celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday and I'm pretty sure I will for the rest of my life.
ReplyDeleteI did read his books. I liked Horton Hatches the Egg. I learned that everyone is equal and that everyone should be treated with respect. I also learned that if you work towards something, you will accomplish it. I think it is great that the younger kids celebrate his birthday, because it is a good way to remember him, and the many things he did for the world.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little kid I read the Dr. Suss my favorite one was Fox in Soxs because I loved all of the creativity in that book especially. I didn't exactly learn anything from the books except for one the lorax and how when things get urbanized wild life and nature goes away. I love children book authors but to be honest there are thousands of them and there is no doubt that Dr. Seuss was an amazing author it's just weird (in my opinion) to celebrate such a small thing but it does show the kids who made the book which is good.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid i really liked Dr. Seuss books. My favorite one was probably The Belly Book because it was just so entertaining to see all of the different types of bellies. It showed me that everybody is different and that people can look however they want and still be a good person on the inside. I think it is a good thing that the little kids are celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday by dressing up as characters in his books. It honors him in a special way and it is really funny to watch kids dress up as Thing One and Two, and The Cat in the Hat!
ReplyDeleteYes, when I was little my parents would read me Dr. Seuss and I loved them. My favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham. That was my favorite book because I loved all of the color and how it had pictures of food. A life lesson is that you can be anything you want to be, but always be yourself. I think that it is great to have the little kids at our school celebrate him because it is fun and a good life lesson to learn.
ReplyDeleteI read Dr. Seuss all the time when I was little. My favorite book was the Foot book because I could read it really fast. I learned which was my left and which was my right. I think it is awesome that they are celebrating his birthday and that they should keep celebrating it.
ReplyDeletemy favorite book by dr. seuss was the cat and the hat or horton hears a who. i love his books because I could read them and feel very accomplished afterword. it also made me love reading. his books teach people to be their selfs and always use their imagination. it is important to celebrate dr. seuss day because it helps kids love reading
ReplyDeleteYes, I did read Dr. Seuss when I was little. My favorite was "Horton Hears a Who" because my favorite animal was an elephant when I was little and I liked how he went on an adventure. Life lessons I learned was enjoy being a little kid and its okay to have a wild imagination. I think its a great idea that the little kids are celebrating Dr. Seuss day because he was an amazing author and still is.
ReplyDeleteI read a little amount of Dr. Seuss when I was a kid. I'd say that Horton Hears a Who is my favorite because I've also seen the movie. I don't know much life lessons I learned from his books because I was too little to remember. I don't care if we are celebrating his birthday or not. I don't have anything against him.

ReplyDeleteI remember that I used to read Dr. Seuss a ton when I was little. Horton Hears a Who is probably my favorite because it seems like a classic that everyone has either read or seen, and I just love it in general. My other favorite is Green Eggs And Ham. It is clever and one of Dr. Seuss's best books. I've learned that having an imagination is okay and to be yourself. I think it is great little kids are celebrating his birthday because it was an author who wrote books I grew up with, and remembering your childhood and having others celebrate a piece of it is amazing.
ReplyDeleteYes, I loved reading Dr. Seuss books, and my favorite one was Cat in the Hat. I loved that book because I loved the cat and how funny he was with his silly words and his weird animals that he used, and I watched so many of his movies a lot, too. I think that the lessons in his books are to learn in a creative way, have fun, and be unique. I think it is great that the kids celebrate his birthday because it really helps them to live a kid life while they are still young enough to believe in him.
