New Year's Resolutions

Each year people all over the world start the new year by making themselves promises.  They promise to lose weight, get to the gym more often, stop yelling, be kinder, learn something new, or a host of other things.  The new year represents a new beginning and to many there is no better time to allow yourself a chance to start over.

I came across a blog post from the Rappler (link below) which has gone through the actions and words from Pope Francis and developed a list of 10 resolutions.  They are:

Don’t gossip
Finish your meals
Make time for others
Choose the ‘more humble’ purchases
Meet the poor ‘in the flesh’
Stop judging others
Befriend those who disagree
Make commitments, such as marriage
Make it a habit to ‘ask the Lord’
Be happy

The link below will bring you to the article which explains in greater detail.

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?  If so, do you mind sharing?  What do you think of the idea of having New Year’s resolutions?  After looking at the list and reading the article about Pope Francis what are your ideas about the resolutions from the Pope’s quotes?

  1. I do have a few New Year's Resolutions. One of them is to not judge others. Sometimes I judge others by their appearance on the outside, but I don't know what they are on the inside. I wouldn't want people to judge me, so I am going to try to work on not judging people. Another one of my New Year's Resolutions is to stop before someone's feeling get hurt. Often when I play with my siblings I tease them too much and they walk away looking sad. After looking at the list and reading the article about Pope Francis, I think that he is completely right about those ten things that we shouldn't do. I think those things sum up what the world needs to work on to improve their relationship with Jesus. That is what I think about New Year's Resolutions.

  2. I don't really have an official New Year's Resolution. If I wanted to set a goal for the new year, then I guess it would be to make time for others. I feel like I'm usually not able to have a lot of sleepovers or to be able to hang out on the weekends with my friends because I either have other plans, or too much homework. I understand that homework always comes first, but I need to work on being able to do both my homework and spend time with family and friends. Having New Year's resolutions is a good time for people to take the time to set a goal and act on it. It's a good idea to help motivate people and keep them healthy. I think the resolutions from the Pope's quotes are very thoughtful and inspiring. They remind me of what Jesus would say, and the pictures remind me of what Jesus would do.

  3. Some of my new year resolutions are respecting other with sincerity and not falling into peer presser and letting it effect my personality. Also to not create as many political arguments without the correct knowledge. I think it's a good idea for people to set goals because if your just staying static in your opinions or actions other people are going to surpass you and you won't be able to move forward. I absolutely love Pope Francis's thoughts on this topic it just shows how he views the world and try to act on it or find times or things where every one can improve.

  4. Well I don't really have a new years resolution, I have a bunch of little ones, but no big ones. I do think it is a good idea to set goals but for some reason this year I have not really made one. Pope Francis's thoughts were so much different then how I see it. He thinks of everything about others and Christ and then his stuff. It inspired me to be a better person in that way. To put God and and others before what I want.

  6. I do have some New Year's Resolutions. My major one is to try my hardest to not gossip. Sometimes I just feel I need to let my feelings fall out and after I say something, I realize I never should have said it. I realize that I wouldn't want someone saying mean things about me. I do not want anyone's feelings hurt because of me. Another one of my goals is to not be late to places. I am always late and I want to change my reputation for that. I also want to put others in front of myself. Sometimes I think of my good before others. I know that is not what Jesus asked for me to do, so I want to change that . I need to treat others the way I would want to be treated. This year, I am going keep the Golden Rule in my head before I say anything I would regret. I think setting goals for the new year is a good idea. Because of the new year, it is a perfect time to start over with new goals. When I looked at the link about Pope Francis's top ten things we should do, I instantly agreed with him. I think everyone should follow those things. I believe that it is exactly what Jesus would want us to do.

  7. I do have a couple of New Years resolutions this year. A lot of little ones but the biggest one is to get better grades. I think that Pope Francis is so right about all the things that we should do. He is so right that we should do those things because it will pull our relationship with Jesus and God together more. It will also help us to be more like Jesus.

  8. My biggest New Year's resolution is to not be afraid to try new things. I usually prefer to do things that I am accustomed to, but I don't really gain new experiences. I think that the tradition of making New Year's resolutions is great. Sometimes, though, it doesn't go anywhere and people either forget or slack off. I believe that Pope Francis's list of resolutions can make the world close close to perfect. I am going to try to add those to my list of resolutions.

  9. I have one New Year's resolution: to spend more time with my brother. Honestly, I don't care about resolutions that much. Barely anyone keeps them, in my opinion and from what I know. I do like what Pope Francis said, though. They are very good resolutions. I try to keep my resolutions, but I always end up either forgetting, or just being plain lazy about doing them. :-)

  10. My 2 main resolutions are these: 1) walk my dog and be outside more 2) STOP PROCRASTINATING! I'm getting better at the second one. I think New Years gives everyone the feeling of a clean slate and thoughts of self-improvement. I hope I will keep my resolutions in mind this year, I usually forget them by March. I think Pope Francis has a new, humble, interesting, and amazing take on these annual goals. My favorite on his list is the one about the poor. This statement reminds me of Jesus. It is why I enjoy helping so much at Friendship Feast and caroling at the Sanctuary and making sandwiches for Corpus Christi House, because I know I'm actually doing something to help. I think Pope Francis will inspire many new and humbling changes to our Church and I can't wait to see what he does next

  11. Yes. I do have a few New Year’s resolutions. One of them is that I will try to be more organized, and not procrastinate as much. I will try to be more understanding, and not get upset over little things. I will also try to exercise and eat healthier when I am not involved in sports. I like the idea of a New Year’s resolution, because it gets people motivated, at least for a little bit, to change their habits or actions. It is hard to follow through with New Year’s resolutions, because of school, sports, and other activities. Then we forget about our goals, and continue to do the things we wanted to change. I really like Pope Francis’s resolutions, because they cover everything that we strive for. He really understands what needs to be changed to make our world a better place.

  12. Yes, I do have a New Year's resolution. This year I want to be a nicer person to others. I do like the idea of New Year's resolutions because it helps you have a new beginning. I think that if other people read Pope Francis's quotes they will be better people.

  13. No I don't have any New Year's resolutions. I think that New Year's resolutions are good but it takes a lot of effort to stick to them like if you were to work out all the time then you only do it once a week. I think that Pope Francis has very reasonable resolutions this year. I think this because I know he will stick to them and accomplish a lot of them. I think that if other people were to see his resolutions other people would use them and make them theirs. And would try as hard as they could to do those things this year.

  14. I don't have any new years resolutions, but if I did have one it would be to watch out for others. I think that new years resolutions are weird because people say they are going to do something to change them and usually they do not follow them anyways. The Pope is someone that will stick with his resolutions. I think that the Pope is one of the only people that could stick with those resolutions. They are hard to stick because sometimes you want to be mean because you are angry.

  15. I do have a few New Year's resolutions. One of the main ones is not to gossip about other people. It is a natural for me to do that, based on appearances or past relationships with people and how they act. That also ties in with not judging people, and that is another one of my resolutions. I like the idea of New Year resolutions. It gives people the chance to change their attitude or other things. I think the resolutions from the Pope's quotes are great. Doing those things the Pope wants you to do can change your life. It will make you closer to Jesus.

  16. I do have some resolutions which are: be nice to my brother and sister, work hard at the time, be a leader in volleyball and basketball, pray more, and run a lot. I think new years resolutions is a great idea because its like having a whole new start and having a chance to change. I think the popes resolutions are great because they teach us to have faith in the lord and to be nice.

  17. I have one main new years resolution and that is to work harder than hard on my schoolwork and get all the things that need to be done… Done. I like the idea of New Year's revolution because it sets some main goals for the year and makes you work extra hard to succeed them, and also staying focused on it. I think that the Pope's resolutions are great and remind us to think and do in God's name.

  18. I have two main new years resolution and that is to work harder on my schoolwork, and to get out and off the TV. I think new years resolutions is a great idea because its like having a whole new start and having a chance to change. I think the popes resolutions are great because they teach us to have faith in the lord and to be nice.

  19. I really only have one New Years resolution and that is to be more organized. I think the idea is good but nobody really follows through with them. His resolutions seem to focus more on other people's well beings other than his. He has things like "Make time for others" showing that he cares a lot about.

  20. I have little New Years resolutions but my bigger one is to be more productive with my school work and get better grades. Pope Francis is very right. I think these New Year Resolutions will help people become closer to God and people will start to become closer. Also so people become more like Christ and follow what great things he did for us and the world.

  21. I wish to read more this year and be able to have a new book each month. Having a New Year's resolution is great because you kind of set the bar for yourself and try and do something you might not have done yet. I think Pope Francis is trying to show us that we need to love Jesus better and have a more advanced relationship with him. Pope Francis is a great person to listen to when it comes to getting to know Jesus because he is a messenger from Jesus.

  22. I want to become a better baseball player then I already am. I think having a resolution is a good thing and that we all should have one and try to accomplish it and go the extra mile. I think that the popes resolution is to not be greedy and to help other like Jesus himself.

  23. Yes i do have a volleyball new years resolution. I resolution is to be more confidant in myself, be a leader both on and off the court, be kinder to my younger brother and work hard at everything i do. I think having a new years resolution really helps you set your goal for the year and helps you strive to accomplish something. After looking at the list and reading the article about Pope Francis, I think that he is right about the ten things that we shouldn't do. I think those specific things sum up what the world needs to work on to improve their relationship with Jesus.

  24. This year I didn't set a New Years Resolution. But if I did it would be to practice more dance outside of my studio, and I will do that, so yes I guess I do have a New Years Resoluton. Having a New Years Resolution helps you reach/accomplish a goal. After looking at the list and reading about Pope Francis's article, he is defiantly right about those ten things we shouldn't do. I think the ten things will help strengthen our relationship with Jesus and others.

  25. I do have some new years resolutions, two of them are 1. I want to put others before myself.(Others needs before mine)2. I want to play the guitar for 20 minutes every day. I like the idea of having new years resolutions. I think they push us to go outside the box. I think he is a very humble man, I also really like his Resolutions because they are all for the benefits of other people.

  26. My New Year's resolution is to work harder in my school work, because I know that I can do a lot better. I think New Year's Resolutions are designed to help people reach goals that they have wanted to. He's right on with everything that he said. It's obvious that he wants everyone to become more like the Son of God.

  27. My New Years resolutions is to get more sleep (which I don't get enough of), be nicer to my mom, and get my homework done earlier. I think that having a New Years resolution is good because it sets goals that you want to achieve. After reading the the article and looking at the list I think that he is right on everything we shouldn't do. I think that that adds up everything we need to do and get closer to God.

  28. i haven't really thought about my New Years resolutions, but i think they are good ways to set goals for yourself. The problem is, it takes a lot of effort to stick to them throughout the whole year (to be honest, by February of 2013, I had already forgotten what my New Years resolutions were.) After reading the article, I think Pope Francis's resolutions are well thought out and kind of mash all these things you should and should not do into ten resolutions. Hopefully while i stay home sick again today, I can think about my goals for this year and maybe make a few resolutions.

  29. i have a couple private new years resolutions.in the past years i haven't stuck to my resolutions but Im really trying this year. He is right on everything he said. I think that his revolutions will help get closer to god for me.

  30. My New Years resolution is to treat my siblings better. I've noticed that lately i've been pretty harsh towards them. I think i should improve that. I think New Years resolutions are great. they help us become the best versions of ourselves. Pope Francis's resolution ideas are really good. Those are the major things that the majority of society struggles with.

  31. My new years resolution is to not procrastinate and to be kinder to my family. I think these are things that I can work on throughout the year. I think new years resolutions are good because you can set goals for yourself and try to reach them. I really liked Pope Francis's resolutions they put everything we shouldn't do together and it helps us become closer to god and be better people.

  32. No never had or thought about it at all.I think it could be helpful because you could see it as a goal. Stay positive don't let yourself down and believe in God that includes going to Church and praying.

    ReplyDelete
  33. No, I don't have a New Year's resolution. I don't think they are effective, and sometimes are just bizarre an unreachable goals, like going from Bs and Cs on report cards to straight As. If the goal is reachable, then you can go for it. But personally, I don't like the idea of New Year's resolutions. Why should you change just because of a new year? You can always make a goal in the middle of the year. Pope Francis's resolutions are so you can be a better person, and they aren't selfish either. Most people would want to lose weight, but if you change so you can be a better person, that isn't just helping you.
