Syria

The problems in Syria are not getting any better.  After two years and 100,000 lives, the sides are further apart than ever before.  While the international community has resisted the urge to get involved, the government regime headed by President Bashar Assad may have crossed the line forcing the United States and other countries to engage in some military activity.

On August 21, 2013 the government regime elected to use chemical weapons on Syrian civilians, including children.  The use of these weapons has been outlawed by the international community.  President Obama has plainly stated if the Assad backed military uses chemical weapons, the United States will respond.

On September 10th President Obama addressed the nation.  He spoke to the people of the United States about the evidence indicating the use of chemical weapons and his desire to conduct a targeted military strike against the Syrian military.  As per his address, he considers it a matter of national security.  If the United States does not respond with decisive military action, it will leave the door open to other governments and organizations to use chemical weapons.  He stated that he will not commit any ground forces or long term air strikes.  Others are not entirely convinced.

Many members of Congress are concerned about United States involvement in the Syrian civil war.  They
are concerned about the effectiveness of any military action as well as the potential of engaging our military personnel in a long-term, difficult to win scenario.

To complicate the issue even further, there are the Russians.  The Russians are backing the government led Assad regime and have warned the United States about potential retaliation for military actions taken against Syrian military.  The Russians are trying to deter the use of force and are negotiating with President Assad to turn over chemical weapons to the international community.

Have you watched, read or heard anything about the situation in Syria?  What do you think the United States should do?  Please provide reasons for your opinion.

  1. Last year in Mrs. Gamboa's social studies class, we watched CNN Student News and they had a lot about the violence in Syria. They showed the war, deaths, and political figures in the war. I think that if the Syrian government uses chemical weapons, the U.S. should respond with force. We already banned the use of them and we gave them a warning, so they shouldn't. If we let them do whatever they want, then we will lose our grip on peace and stability.

  2. I have heard some things about Syria on the news, but not everything. I agree that the United States should get involved if the Syrian government continues to use chemical weapons on their innocent people, including children, because we shouldn't stand by and watch this unnecessary action go on. The United States of America will stand up for what we believe is right, and if innocent people are being harmed in the world, then we will go and fight for them.

  3. I have heard very little about Syria and the problrms going on, but I beleive that if we dont get involved we dont bring the United States into this tragedy.

  4. I have heard very little about the crisis in Syria. The only thing that I have heard/watch is the President's speech towards what is going on. It's hard to believe that Syria is gassing children and generally people. The thing I find crazy is that we already banned the use of chemical weapons and right after we do that they go and use chemical weapons... ! I do think that the U.S. should get involved because once Syria kills all the people there who will they then target. Also if we let them continue the use of these weapons they will think they can do whatever they want.

  6. I know practically nothing besides that syria is in a civil war and that alot of people are dying and no one is really trying to fix it. I think that we should get involved but not turn into a full fledged war.

  7. Yes I have heard and read things about Syria. On CNN news last year I heard quite a bit, and also I have read about it in the magazines that Mrs. Gamboa would have us read as a class. I think that the United States should get evolved because many people are dying and if we do not get involved people will think that they can do what they want and that would be very bad. I do not think that the united states should go into a full war though because that could also turn into something we do not want to be in plus it also hearts the people of the United States.

  8. I have heard of Syria many times on CNN and in magazines and I am hearing the name more and more often. I think when they started using chemical weapons on CHILDREN and INNOCENT PEOPLE is when it became an international matter. I think our Congress did right by not getting fully involved but is trying to solve the matter by talking things out.

  9. I have heard a lot about Syria, and the use of chemical weapons there. I watch the news a lot and there is an update basically every night. I don't think we should get involved with this. I know it's bad that they are gassing people and children, but once we go for them, aren't we doing the same thing? It would kind of be hypocritical...

    1. I agree but we would be breaking it up not putting fuel on the fire... right...?

  10. I have a lot about Syria from CNN and from scholastic news that we get in Reading from Mrs. Gamboa. It is very horrible how they are using chemical weapons on innocent people and children. I think the United States should get involved because innocent people are dying. If we don't take matters into our own hands things could get a lot worse in Syria. I'm saying to go full on war against Syria but we should try to help and talk things out.

  11. I have heard about the situation in Syria more than once, and that they are killing basically everyone in their path. I think that the United States should offer advice to Syria but not add anymore harm. Because we basically put a target on our backs and say come and get us.

  12. I have heard and watched about the situation in Syria and know that the Syrians need our prayers to find the right path that God wants them to go on. We pray for the country and the people of Syria in school during special intentions and all of us have been thinking of the country many times during our day. At this state in Syria, I think the United States should get involved because the government in Syria are hurting and gassing their own people, including little children. I think that we should try to figure out a solution to all the problems going on and we should assess how we are going to try and fix them.

  13. I have heard some parts of the crisis in Syria. I find it very hard to understand why the dictators in Syria want to use chemical weapons towards human beings. It is very wrong to be gassing children. I think the United States should do something about these problems. We shouldn't allow anyone, even someone out of our own country, to treat people this way. It doesn't feel right to allow these horrible things to happen and do nothing about it. I hope that the United States does get involved with this issue and help the innocent children and adults in Syria.
If we don't do anything about it, the government in Syria will think they can do what ever they want. We cannot let that happen.

  14. Yes I haved heard things about Syria. Last year we watched CNN Student News and they would always talk about it. I have also read about Syria in magazine articles from Scholastic News. I'm shocked that the Syrian government would kill young children by using chemical weapons. Yes, I do think that the United States should get involved because if we don't, things could get worse by possibly killing off Syrian people who have done nothing wrong. Also, if we don't get involved, Syria could start using these weapons against us or other countries.

  15. I have heard just a tinny bit about Syria But I heard just enough to know whats going on. I think the United states should just sit and watch because if we do declare ware than more cavil-ans will die.

  16. On the radio when I am coming home from school, I sometimes hear about Syria. Sometimes during dinner we talk about it. I think that the United States should do something about this. We have an obligation to help people that cannot defend themselves. They are killing innocent people with chemical weapons. If we don’t do something what will happen? Will thousands of Syrians continue to lose their lives? If we do something maybe we could save some lives? If we do go and help we could start a war. If that happened then more people would lose their lives. We need to find a way to go there and stop the violence without starting a war.

  17. All I've heard about Syria is that there is a war going on. I think that the United States should help, but just with medications, food, water, and other thing that the Syrian people need, but not get involved in the war in terms of weapons. We already have another country threatening chemical war; we don't need anyone with nuclear weapons threatening us.

  18. I haven't been too involved with whats going on in Syria, but i understand that the country is being torn by civil war. Syrian rebels are trying to overthrow the government and the government has been technically killing their own people in defense. I think that the U.S. should act by doing all they can to help the civilians who are being. If we don't men, women, and children will continue too die by the hundreds everyday. Syria's government could also start a chemical weapon war between us, itself, and other countries.

  19. I have kind of kept up with the Syrian situation; but not really. I do know that they are in a horrible civil war. I think that they U.S should send troops. If they don't million of people will die. They need our help and I think we should send troops.

  20. I have heard people talking a lot about Syria, and I can't believe that the President Obama wants to go to war. I believe the U.S. should not go to war and help a country that is actually our enemy and has great ties with our number one enemy Russia. Why should we bring in our massively powerful weapons and give them to our enemy, Syria. This civil war should unfortunately be amongst themselves only.

  21. I have a lot about Syria from CNN and fox and local sations. Obama only wants to go to war if needed . I believe the U.S. should not go to war and help a country that is actually our enemy and has great ties with our number one enemy Russia. This civil war should unfortunately be amongst themselves only. Many of my classmates got it wrong by a long shot, Obama does not want war. He will only do it if necessary. At this state in Syria, I think the United States should get involved because the government in Syria are hurting and gassing their own people, including little children. I think that we should try to figure out a solution to all the problems going on and we should assess how we are going to try and fix them do not think that the united states should go into a full war though because that could also turn into something we do not want to be in plus it also hearts the people of the United States. We need to help not war and that is what Obama (Better than Bush would do) will do.

  22. I havent heard too much about Syria. I know that it is incredibly dangerous and their leader is terrorizing them. The Usa should for now stay out of it because it is so heated right now that going in to help could make things worse. The government could feel too pressured and become more violent. Also it could start another war. I think we only should get involved if they get us involved. EXP: Pearl Harbor

  23. I haven't heard a lot about Syria, but I have heard that it is extremely dangerous and their leader is terrorizing them. I think the USA should stay out of Syria's problems and deal with our own. If Syria wants to include us that's great, but we should get involved if we have a choice. I don't think we should get involved because it could cause arguments or even a war.

  24. I have only heard about the Syria attacks from you in class, not really outside of class. I think the US should let Syria try and figure out their problem, but then send in military if they can't figure it out. Some reasons I think this is because if they try by themselves it will unite them as a country if it works. Also, because the US shouldn't become enemies with Syria.

  25. I have heard of the attacks in Syria. I haven't heard much about it outside of school but when we talk about it in class that's when I hear about it the most. I think the US should do something to try to help them. The US should try to send military out there to help them but also Syria needs to try to overcome this. We can help them in some ways but also we need to let them figure it our also. We dot to become enemy's with them or cause anything to happen.

  26. I haven't heard that much of the situation in Syria. I only know that there is a mass amount of violence going on and the United State is debating whether to get involved or not. If the Syrian government is doing bad things, we should he involved. If not, we need to stay out of it. Trying to stop it will mean that there may be no more war in Syria, but if we stay out if it, we won't be caught in the middle.

  27. I have heard a little bit about the situation in Syria here and there but i haven't heard a lot. However, i do know that Syria is definitely not a very good place to be in right now and the Syrian people are not in a very good position. i Also know that Syria is using chemical weapons on people in their own country. I think that the U.S does and also doesn't need to get involved. i really want Syria to get a piece of our mind and for the U.S to make them stop doing their evil things. I also, however, dont want the U.S to get involved because i dont want the U.S to get caught right in the middle of all the violence.

  28. I Have heard about what is going on in Syria but not very much. I know that there is a lot of violence in Syria and that there has been lots of people killed. I think that the US shouldn't get to involved but should try to help. I think if we get too involved it could cause other problems and that is not what they need or us.i hate that so many people are getting hurt and killed in Syria.

  29. I have heard about all of the fighting in Syria with the chemical weapons to riots on the streets all of them are terribly sad and not good news. The U.S.A honestly should stay out we are already in debt all ready, and giving Syria f22s and tanks and weapons is not going to make anything better but we just have to realize that maybe helping out to much is not a good thing and I know the U.S.A. wants allies but the people of Syria will just hate us more for it. Sorry for getting it in late.

  30. Other than this blog i haven't heard much except for them using chemical weapons. I try to educate myself on things but I don't go on the internet everyday and look up whats going on. I'm not sure what the United States should do. It all depends on what Obama's resolution plan may be. If it is fighting I think it will only make things worse, and we don't need another 2 year war. If Obama tries to reason i think things might work out but i really don,t know. I think we should try and reason with them and if that gets us no where try and evacuate or move people away from Syria. Sorry for the late day

  31. I have heard a few things here and there about the crisis in Syria. I believe that they should do something about this because it is not fair that people are being shunned for wanting freedom. I believe that this will be solved but not in a peaceful way. Plus America is a helping country so they won't just sit back and watch Syria be destroyed.

  32. I have heard a little about the crisis in Syria. I think that the US should give some time and talk it out come up with an agreement without more violence. If we bomb them I personally think matters will just get worse. I think we are a big threat from Syria's eye and there military wants us out of it.

  34. Yes I have been following up on the recent events and what the USA is doing to try and stop it. I started watching it because my mom had the TV on in the morning and one of the topics was bombing Syria. I was concerned and wanted to know more on what was happening. I think we should try and reason with the Syrian government and help to get this stopped. I think it is an outrage that so many people are being killed everyday its crazy.
