The United States is taking recent threats by the Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea seriously.
The DPRK, or North Korea, has communicated it is a state of war with
South Korea and the United States. Kim
Jong Un, the 30 year old leader of North Korea, is threatening to attack United
States bases in Korea and in other places in the Pacific.
Kim Jong Un is using the recent military exercises conducted
by the United States and South Korea as a catalyst to rally his nation behind
the idea of being the victim of the aggressions of their neighbors and
America. The propaganda deployed by the
North Korean government is shocking but effective with the people of North
Korea.
The threats from North Korean’s head of state is nothing
new. Kim Jong Un’s father and
grandfather have been saber rattling about the United States and South Korea
since the armistice was reached in the 1953, ending the fighting of the Korean
War. While the threats are nothing new,
the variables have changed. Kim Jong Un
is young and unpredictable. His
inexperience in world affairs concerns leaders in our state department and Pentagon. In addition, North Korea, while still lacking
the necessary technology to launch an attack on the United States, their nuclear
and warfare technology is far more advanced than it was a year ago.
While the United States and South Korea are preparing for
potential attacks, they are trying to figure out what North Korea wants and how
they can put an end to the rhetoric. The
recent statements from Kim Jong Un can be for a number of reasons including:
1.
An
attempt to coerce the South Koreans and the United States to provide additional
aid the North Korea
2.
Demonstrating North Korea’s resentment and anger
towards the United Nations about recent sanctions against North Korea due to
their unauthorized nuclear weapon testing
3.
An attempt to distract the North Korean people
from their current economic struggles and give them some national issue to
rally behind
4.
A desire to show strength to his people and over
compensate for his lack of age and experience
The most tragic part of the story is the plight of the people
of North Korea. Since the government
controls access to information, the people do not understand the realities of
the world outside of the DPRK. They
truly believe everything they hear from the government and the lies about the
United States. These are people who are
starving. They lack the basic needs of
survival. Instead of the government
investing in their people, they continue to invest in warfare technology.

Reed- I think that the threats from North Korea are ridicules. Even if they did what they are going to do to us we would just got over there and squash them depending on how big of what they did to us. The United States should respond like we are right now, just stay calm and be the great nation that we are. If North Korea attacks South Korea or or base in Asia i think that we should give them a taste of there own medicine. If they hurt the sleeping giant then we will wake up and we will not be happy.
ReplyDeleteThomas- The threats are a little bit over the top since they don't have a lot of weapons to back up their threats. The United States should probably try to work things out with them so that we don't get into another war. If North Korea starts to attack our allies or our bases, we should definitely defend ourselves because it would be wrong to leave our own people or even our allies to die.
ReplyDeleteNikita- I think they are unreasonable and illogical. It's not like America has ever done anything extremely rash to North Korea. I think we shouldn't start a war, but if they attack us, then we should be prepared and attack back if we have to, but we also shouldn't do anything rash because, being the already crazy leader he is, Kim Jong Un might try to have us attack them and frame it as so so he can have a war. If North Korea attacks South Korea or our base, we should do the same thing, but still first make sure that we are not being baited and that we don't give them any reason to attack them.
ReplyDeleteGrace- I think the threats are kind of scary. However, if they were to bomb us, it wouldn't be a smart decision because we would do way worse to them. I think the United States should show them who they're messing with. Not necessarily by bombing them, but maybe try to warn them. If they were to attack us or South Korea, we should fight back. I don't like fighting, but it seems in this situation to maybe be the only effective option. Then again, we fought in the Korean War which solved nothing, if not made it worse. Maybe if somehow the North Koreans learned what's really happening then they would overthrow Kim Jong Un. I don't know how that would happen though.
ReplyDeleteKeelie: I don't know what to think about the threats. It makes me laugh, but I know it's somewhat serious. The US should respond carefully, but be assertive. I think the US needs to take action if that happens. We can't let NORTH KOREA think they can do that or have that much power. America needs to keep an eye on North Korea.
ReplyDeleteWes-I think that it is right now quite strange since there is at the moment not a completely confirmedreason why this is happening. I mean, there needs to be a reason involved or else there will be no real cause for anyone to get involved. I think the U.S. should first see where this goes and if anything happens then they should defend and make sure there are no more attacks.
ReplyDeleteAdriana: I think that the threats we are getting from North Korea are kinda nerve-racking. what if they were to bomb us?? well actually that wouldn't be a very smart decision on their part because what ever they do to us we can do 10 times worse to them. if North Korea were to ever bomb us or South Korea I think we should take action, but instead of fighting right away I think that we should maybe try threatening them then if they back off we can just go back to normal. we will still have to keep a close eye on though. if they don't back off then I think we should try fighting back even though I don't really approve fighting, but I think we would have to do what is necessary to make North Korea stop.
ReplyDeleteLily- I think the threats that North Korea is giving us is scary. If they do bomb us then it will be very devastating, but we also do have SO much more power then North Korea has. It would not be very smart of them to bomb us because, like what everyone else is saying we can do it 10 times worse back to them. If North Korea did make the wrong decision to bomb us then we need to get into control and get things straight. We need to respond in a smart way and not just go off and start attacking North Korea. We should try to threat them and wait and see what happens. If that doesn't work then we really do need to take control and start fighting back, even though fighting is not the right way to do it. There is no reason to let North Korea take the U.S down. We do need to stand up for what is right.
ReplyDeleteLuke- I think that their government even getting the slightest impression that we would bomb them is just ridiculous. I believe we need to respond tto this in the most nonviolent way because if we make one agressive move, the bombs will drop. We need to negotiate with them and possibly write a peace treaty to sort things out. I dont believe that we should take act if they attack South Korea, but if they attack one of our military bases, North Korea is getting us involved because they just made it our problem. I don't know what the USA would do, but it would definitly be something that would set them straight for a while.

ReplyDeleteRyan- Even though I know that North Korea can't send bombs over to America they could send them to South Korea. If that happens we could be in all out nuclear war. I think we should react slowly, we wouldn't want to provoke them to soon.
Sydney- I think the threats from North Korea is very unreasonable. It's pretty certain that they won't bomb America, or it will ruin the whole entire world. I think that the United States should not bombard them with war, I think they should take time and think about what they are going to do. If North Korea attacks South Korea or a United States base is Asia, we might get a little more violent, which is never the answer. We defiantly need to take time.

The united states should stay out of things until things escalated. If North Korea makes any move to use nuclear war against anyone, we should "bring the pain". I think we should try and stop things before they get to this level.
ReplyDeleteIsabel- I think the threats on North Korea are fake because they are just trying to get our attention, I think Kim Jong Un is also just holding his hand out for money and threatening us so he can have the goods he wants. I think that if the United States is attacked by North Korea, we should fight back. Perhaps we can fight in other ways to try and let his people find out what's going on in the rest of the world.

I highly doubt that they will actually attack South Korea or the U.S. If they did, they would be completely crushed by our military and many others. I think that the U.S. should only get involved if we or one of our allies is directly attacked by North Korea.
ReplyDeleteBailie- I think the threats from North Korea are dangerous because it’s not smart for a country who is not our ally to threaten a nuclear attack against us. I also think that the United States should put pressure on China to get the problem solved, but not too much pressure since China is already trying. Again in my opinion, if North Korea attacks South Korea or a United States base in Asia then America should take that as an act of war. Then America would have to act swiftly and failure would not be an option. That would also involve something China does not want; a fully equipped and ultra-modern American army on its borders.
ReplyDeleteNatalie- I think that North Koreas's threats are not dangerous to the United States at the moment, but our bases there and close by would be in danger. It is very scary to think that a country halfway across the world from us will soon be able to wipe out a massive amount of Americans. It must be especially frightening to South Koreans, as they are North Koreas's neighbors. I think we (United States, China, South Korea, United Nations) should keep trying to coerce North Korea to stop testing unauthorized nuclear weapons. If they attack us or South Korea... well... I really wouldn't know how to deal with that. If we start a war with them, then they will launch more nuclear weapons, and we might be forced to launch nuclear missiles, and it would be chaos. It's kind of a unsolvable problem!

I think the United States should respond in a nonviolent way by letting them know that bombing us isn’t a very smart decision. If North Korea goes through with their threats and bombs South Korea or us I think the United States should get involved. I don’t like war but if they are going to bomb us then I think the army should do what they have to in order to protect our county. In my opinion North Korea doesn’t know whom they are dealing with.
ReplyDeleteTodd-The threats from North Korea are very scary and we really need to try to stop this fighting now or who knows what will happen. If they did decide to bomb us we would only turn around and bomb them twice as bad. This would be no help to anyone. So many people would be affected who are innocent! If they bomb our base in Asia or South Korea, we should really be on guard and take treat it like the US could be next. We need to take immediate precautions, and fast because this really could end up to be the beginning if World War three.

I think we should respond by stopping there little game of battle ship and put an end to this stupidity. If they even try to attack i think that we should just end their country plain and simple.

The fact that they are telling our country threats is even more stupid because we have lots of powerful things in The USA and I wouldn't be sending out threats if I were them. I think that our country should respond to their actions by saying "if you even touched our country then yuo would be in some deep trouble. If they were to attack our counrty then we should go over their and show them how ending a country is really done ( no offensive to all of the inisint people over their though.
ReplyDeleteLiam~ I think that North Korea is bluffing and is trying to get America scared. True, they actually have nuclear weapons but they cant really do anything. I think that we should assertively say to North Korea that is they cause any harm to the US that we will have no choice but to retaliate and make sure that North Korea never threats us again. We would also be forced to retaliate if North Korea attacks South Korea, or the American Base in Asia.
ReplyDeleteTomas- I feel a little bit scared knowing that at any moment a nuclear bomb will fall on our house and blow my head to peices. I think when King Jun Un is trying to make better Nuclear Weopons and not thinking so much about his people. Maybe soon the people of North Korea will rebel against the government. I think that if the people rebel, the US and maybe South Korea can help them. IF north korea attacks anyone, the United States should team up with south Korea, Japan even, and even China to take out the North Korean government and take out King Jun Un. another way we could stop it is to simply assassinate King Jun Un. He is the one wanting the weopons right?
ReplyDeleteRylie:I think the threats from North Korea are crazy. I mean its not like they are going to do anything and if they did The U.S. would probably have a handle on it. The United States should respond not very violently, but still sternly. If N.K. were to attack another base in Asia, the US should responded quite quickly to make them knock it off. If we don't respond or act severely enough, N.K. would probably just keep doing it and getting stronger each time.
ReplyDeleteNathaniel- I have no idea why North Korea is even considering attacking anyone. These threats are pointless, and it’s turning the entire world against them. The U.S. should wait a little bit more until we are sure they are sending nuclear weapons. If it comes down to that, the U.S. should immediately send a group of people (a Seal Team) to kill him (Kim Jung Un). If North Korea tries to attack South Korea, the U.S. should try and help South Korea the best we can. Once the first weapon is used though, nuclear warfare will ensue. And then, the end will begin...

It's actually very sad because the innocent people there are being ruled over a power-hungry, crazy, young dictator without even knowing it. I really hope because of these threats the United States will start to really organizes and get support with other countries to help bring down this tyrant. Same goes for the United Nations. Hey, the same thing happened with Russia! If they do attack, we need to shut them down once and for all!
ReplyDeleteRaquel- I always ask why we all can not get along with each other. I feel like all of us still need some learning to do and find a way to settle things. It is very sad and crazy the way North Korea is responding. I think we should just hence that war is not going to solve anything so let's just settle this as good people and discuss our situation. I think the only response for an attack is what we don't want to do but are kind of forced to do so if such happens.
ReplyDeleteLiza- I don't think it's very good of North Korea to threaten the United States that way. They should know better then to threaten a different counties people. I think the U.S. should respond with a mediator. I know that sounds childish but if we were to call in important people from North Korea and important people from the U.S, and both sides were willing to work out their differences, I think this might be resolved in a more peaceful way. If the North Koreans do decide to launch an attack, and I'm not saying we should declare war or anything, we need to keep our heads and answer in a way that won't launch a war but in a way that will give them the message of "Hey, you can't blow up our site and then just be cool with that!" My only hope in this event is that somehow we can resolve this peacefully.

I know how everyone says their going to bomb countries with nuclear weapons and never do, but it sounds like he may actually do it. I don't think they should threaten the United States like that. I don't think we should respond with we will blow you up first or bring it on. I think we should be like is it really worth it and should we actually start a nuclear war. I think if that attack one of our bases or South Korea's base then it has gone too far. I don't want to say it but if they attack one of our bases then I guess we have to do what we have to do and I'm pretty sure that will end up in war.
ReplyDeletePetie-The threats from NK are absolutely overkill, and they don't have the resources to do the threatened amount. They can barely even feed their own people, let alone build a strong enough nuclear bomb to go to America. I personally think that Kim Jong Un is the one that is ill now, and is sick due to the amount of power given to him. I think he is just trying to scare us forcing us to send our troops closer, and blow them up. Wouldn't he even just blow up more of North Korea anyway? He is just a meniscal, young, and inexperienced leader. The United States should try to strengthen up their army in North Korea, giving them nothing but their country to fire at, only themselves. We should try less defenses in South Korea, creating less of a threat to South Korea. The U.S. could also just blow North Korea out of the ground, but that would be just as stupid of a decision of the U.S. I think that no matter which way you take it it would be kind of hard for us to completely get rid of the threat that is North Korea. I wonder if they even know about the jokes we are making about them, or how we could squash them like a bug? If North Korea were to attack any allie then we should just flat out stop the chaos by moving a bunch of troops in, helping out our ally, and by (if worst comes to worst) start a war. It could lead to a complete wipeout of North Korea, just like Hiroshima. I bet that if Kim were to eat a snickers he would not be hungry, and turn into Psy.

I think that the US should respond because the US basin is being attacked and that is part of the US government.
