Super Bowl Commercials

Chances are if you did not watch the Super Bowl you have heard about the commercials.  Super Bowl commercials have taken on a life of their own.  They have become bigger than the game itself for many people.  I must admit, even I, who turns the channel every time a commercial airs, was anxious to watch the new batch of advertisements to Super Bowl XLVII.

Advertising during the Super Bowl is a gamble.  You have to hope that the cost of the ad will pay off with the increase in business.  History has shown the commercials work, but even then there are only a few companies that can afford to spend $3.8 million on one 30 second advertisement.  But companies like Budweiser, Doritos, and  Go Daddy.com seem to ante up each year.

While the commercials and the budgets have gotten bigger, many are beginning to question whether the advertisements still meet the family entertainment the Super Bowl tries to promote.   As the years have progressed the ads have become closer to PG-13 to R rated than PG.

I have attached a link to the commercials below.  Go down about half way down the page and you can view all of them.

The commercial at the top was my favorite, followed by the Budweiser commercial with the Clydesdale.

Which commercial was your favorite and why?  What is your reaction to the cost of a 30 second commercial?  Do you think it is worth it?  What do you think about the content of some of the commercials?  Have the commercials become to risqué?

  1. Nikita- My favorite commercial was one of the car ones where the boy is going to prom and his dad hands him the keys to the car, and the car is super cool, obviously the new car they're trying to sell. Anyway, this kid goes to prom and goes up to a girl and kisses her, but this girl is the prom king's girlfriend, and the prom king goes and punches him in the eye. The cost of the commercials in outrageous, and if the commercial doesn't help sales, you pretty much just wasted 3 million dollars for 30 seconds of TV. I think it is worth it most of the time though. Some of the commercials have gotten a little inappropriate, and there were worse ones than the ones they showed in the Super Bowl. A whole bunch of inappropriate commercials were rejected and didn't even show. So obviously I think some have become to risque.

  2. Bailie- My favorite commercial was the Coca-cola one that should all the good people can do and telling the viewers to look at the world a little different. I think that the cost is ridiculous for only 30 seconds. But everyone who is watching the Superbowl gets to watch your commercial so if it helps sales it sort of evens out. I also think some of the content in certain commercials were provocative. Like the Calvin Klein or the go daddy commercials. I mean some ladies might like the Calvin Klein one, but it was too much. The Go Daddy one was just disgusting also. So ya some have become too risque.

  3. Petie-I may have to say that my favorite one was the Go Daddy commercial. Just kidding. I am scarred from that. MY favorite was probably the Volkswagen on where the guys are all don't worry man, It's all good man. They basically sent out good vibes, thanks to their car. Even though it raised eyebrows, I thought it was pretty dang good.I don't think it was worth it. You get a good laugh out of people, but not much more. I wouldn't invest 3.8 million dollars for 30 seconds. As I said up there, the content of some is absolutely scarring, like no more childhood scarring. It is unbelievable that someone would have the guts to put that on national television. I think that some of the commercials are to risqué, but others are good. It is unbelievable.

  4. Grace- I was disappointed with the commercials this year. I didn't think any of them were that funny, and some of them were just disturbed. I did like the one for Sketchers though. I liked how he chased down the cheetah and tied it in a knot. I know the commercials cost a lot. I was surprised about how many of the commercials were for TV shows instead of products. I do not think it is worth it. That is a lot of money to have to pay off. Like I said, some of them were disturbed. The Go Daddy commercial didn't even make any sense. That was just gross. Nobody should have to witness that. My mom read that they took something like 40 takes for that commercial and the geek said it was like a piece of heaven. At least play music so you don't have to listen to that! That commercial was too risque.

  5. Thomas B.- I did not actually watch the Super Bowl. Not even a little bit. But I have seen some commercials from the past, and I am sure the commercials from this year were as disturbing and funny. I am shocked people spend so much money for just 30 seconds of advertising, but they must get some profits or they wouldn't be doing it. Some of the previous ones were pretty funny and some are a little weird. But from what I hear, there some disturbing, gross, and definitely too risqué.

  6. Natalie- My favorite was the Dorito commercial. I loved that the idea was so original! $3.8 million is crazy in my opinion, but if companies actually make money on them, then that's pretty amazing. If it was me, I wouldn't, unless I was guaranteed a profit. The content is definitely getting R rated now though, and I don't watch the Super Bowl commercials anymore. Some of them are really pretty gross!

    1. Meh, it depends on your view of gross, but the go daddy one was pretty morbid.

  7. I liked the Doritos commercials. Because it was funny and shows that all goats can be a killer when it comes to Doritos. It is crazy that its cost 3.8 million dollars to just have 30 second’s on TV. Yes, if you have a good commercial. They were extremely funny and some of the best one I have seen. The go daddy was a little risqué, and really gross.

  8. My favorite was the Coca Cola one, and 3.8 Million is absurd, because here is the logic: 2 hours of blood and violence does not affect us, but 30 seconds of a product is supposed to make us swarm to wal-mart or a car dealership. Tell me how that works. To me, i LOVE offensive content, like 4chan, but to think that some christian soldier raised kid is sitting in front of the T.V. and doesn't know a thing of the real world, and sees these two people just going at it making out, is probably going to mess the kid up. I know this because i have some friends who are 14 and 18, they act like they are 12 and 14 instead of their actual age, it is terrible, the parents won't even let them see a G rated movie unless they saw it first, a G rated movie! I frankly feel sorry for them when they get to college, because it is brutal, especially frat houses. -Sean

  9. Tomas-My two favorite commercials were the one about the farmer and the budweiser one. I likethem both becuase the farmer one makes a good thing out of a farmer. i like the budweiser one becuase it was really sweet with the horse. i was very surprised with the cost of a really small commercial. Unless the company is really rich, like BAIN, then im sure they can afford it. But i thing that the commercials should be appropiate and clever. Which was definetly NOT the GoDaddy commercial. I didnt see all the super bowl commercials so I dont know if im accurate about this but i think that there was only one Risque commercial. I think that you can come up with the commercial that i am thinking about.

  10. Luke- My favorite commercial was probably the Volkswagon commercial because of how original it was. When it came on, everyone in the living room laughed. I think the price is pretty ridiculous but believable, because of the tens of millions of people who watch the Superbowl. I do not think it is worth it because I highly doubt that the company who pays for the commercial will get 3.8 million dollars back plus earning more. From what I have heard, these commercials are leaning on the line when it comes to inappropriate content. I have not seen the Go daddy comercial that was played on the super bowl, but because of what I have seen from the recent ones, I'm gonna guess it was pretty bad. These advirtisements need to be toned down. They have innapropriate content and should not be seen by young viewers.

  11. Justin- My favorite commercial was the Taco Bell one because of the old people. I wasn't suprised by the cost because there will be a lot of people watching. I think that it would be worth it because there would be so many people watching. I think the Go Daddy one was pretty nasty and I was eating when it came on so that made it worse.

  12. John-My favorite commercial was the oreo commercial because all of the people argued wether they liked the cookie or cream part of the oreo and when they argued it got intense and the people started throwing objects at each other. I think the cost of a super bowl commercial is crazy because of the cost, but of all of the adds think it is worth it probally because of all the views the commercial gets. I don't think it is worth spending 3.8 million dollarss, but othe people would disagree because all of the money they get in return. Some of the commercials have became at risque because (like you said) the commercials are geting PG 13 and R rated instead of PG.

Ryan- My favorite would have to be the Volkswagon commercial. I love the Super Bowl commercials so it was hard for me to pick a favorite. I think that some of the ads were a wast of 3.8 million dollars. A few didn't seem like it would help their sales, but it was funny none the less. I think that it's getting really close to being WAY to inappropriate for kids watching. They need to remember that the Super Bowl is a family event. I think they have, but I don't really want to go into detail on that.

  14. Adriana: my favorite super bowl commercial would have to be the Oreo one! I like this commercial the best because they are all in a library together and they are fighting over which they thought was the best (cookie or cream) and they are whispering at each other and thy just keep on fighting but they are all whispering and I thought that that was pretty funny. I am very shocked at the prices that the company's pay for just for 30 seconds of the TV! I think it is worth it because everyone is going to watch the super bowl so they will see the commercial for a certain product and might go oh that's kind of coo but then I think it is not worth it because you just wasted # million dollars for a product that people may or may not buy. I think the content of some of the commercials was just ridiculous, for example that go daddy commercial. I man no one wants to see that! yes I do think that some of the commercials have become risqué like the go daddy one or the calvin clein one!

  15. Lily- I was very dissapionted in the Super Bowl commercials this year. Some of them were funny and other ones were outragious. My favorite one though would have to be the Sketchers commercial, where the guy chased down the cheetah and tied him in a knot. I think it's crazy how much the commercials cost for just a 30 second commercial. Personaly the money used for the commercials could be used for so many differant things, but the commercials are what make the Super Bowl what it is. Some of the commercials that they played were really inapropriate, exspecially since kids watch it. The commercials they play I don't even think help them at all towards there company. A few commercial were very much a risque and others were funny. Over all I thought the commercials were ok, but I hope they do better next year.

  16. Nekane- i liked the vodswagon one i think it was that i liked it because all the kids were like doing an act like saving people or working and then the boy gatherd them all up for the bullies to give them there footballl back or something. Crazy and outragous its crazy what money they spend. good but bad i dont know the commercials wernt as funny this year. Sometime ya like the godaddy commercial was really wierd.

  17. Andoni-I really like watching the Super Bowl. Both for the game and the commercials. I was kind of mad the the Ravens won.My favorite commercial would have to be the Taco Bell one. It was a bit weird but really funny. It showed that no matter how old you are you can always "live mas." The other commercial that was really good and effective was the Go.Daddy commercial it may have been weird but it got people talking.Almost every person on this blog said some thing about it so people will definitely remember it.It makes sense to spent all that money because some people only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Some of the content in the commercials were kind of messed up.I think that some people might like them but there is a line and some of these commercials have crossed them.

  18. Megan- My favorites were definably the "God made a farmer" and Budweiser with the horse. My mom and I were close to tears with the later one. They were just really down to earth good commercials, not just stupid ones. To me the price of these other dumb ads are just ridiculous!! Some of them stuck in my head, so I guess they worked. Some of them were totally gross! I am scarred by the Go Daddy.com ad. Ewwww!!! People should know the there are little kids watching the Super Bowl for crying out loud!!

  19. Nate- The Budweiser one was my favorite. The whole horse thing was pretty cool. I cannot believe anyone would spend 3.8 million dollars to have their product be seen on TV for 30 seconds. That is just ridiculous. Does it even get their stuff sold? Well I for one am not going to go and buy some random product after watching those commercials, so maybe not. As far as OC goes in commercials, I think that most companies are pretty good at keeping their ads clean. There are always exceptions (GoDaddy, anyone?), but that's exactly what the companies that air them look for. For some reason, the TV stations still let creepy commercials air, so there is nothing we can really do about it but hope that it doesn't happen again.

  20. Hayley: The commercials were not as good this year. I liked the sketcher one and the old people taco bell one. I think that paying that much for one 30 second commercial is not worth it. I think that paying that much is not reasonable at all. The money could go to something better and more reasonable. I think some of the commercials were a not so kid friendly. The Calvin Klein was not at all kid friendly. I think some people are forgetting that the Super Bowl is watched by children. I think they should make the commercial more kid friendly while still being funny.

  21. Liam~ My favorite one was the Oreo Cookie one. The irony of the commercial was so funny that I found myself laughing hysterically inside my head. You know, the cost doesn't surprise me, I think that if the company has the money to produce that expensive of an ad, they should go for if they think it will increase their prices. I think that some of those commercials (like the GoDaddy) were just stupid and I think that this proves how America can sometimes just be pigs. I think that there should be a filter or something. And it also shows how desperate the company is, it means that they have stooped so low to target the audience of pigs. But like Andoni said, it attracts attention, and people will be talking about it for a long time (shudders).

  23. Nathaniel- My favorites were the Budweiser (horse one) and the Oreo Whisper Fight. The Budweiser shows how bonded you can become with an animal, and I personally thought that was one of the best ads from the whole game. The Oreo one was HILARIOUS, and my brother and sister were laughing for a while after seeing that one. I actually knew about the cost for making a Superbowl commercial, and always used to wonder how companies didn't run on a loss after spending $3.8 million. I don't PERSONALLY think this worth it. In the long run though, the ads may help the company. Some ads though, can destroy a companies reputation (Go Daddy), and that wasn't the only bad one. I'm really happy my brother and sister didn't have to watch that Go Daddy stuff... Some commercials were pretty good this year, but for the most part, they were just plain bad. Commercials have definitely become a lot more risqué, and its keeping on increasing. Some commercials have crossed the line, and we have to figure out a way to put a stop to this.

  24. Patrick-My favorite commercial was the Oreo commercial because my family has that argument all the time. I think that the cost of the commercials is reasonable yet insane at the same time. See everyone is watching it so you get alot of people to see your product. But the only companies that can afford Super Bowl commercials are companies that everyone knows about like bud wiser and Doritos, and the cost for them is just insane, we could feed all the starving nations with that money! But yes i do think it was worth it to have everyone see it. I really like the content of the truck commercial because they weren't afraid to use god so much. Some commercials have been a little to out there and thats not ok.

  25. My favorite commercial was the Budweiser commercial because of the tiny Clydesdale horse. They did a fantastic job filming that because you got to see the horse grow up with his owner. And for that horse to remember him was just precious. The cost of a 30 sec. commercial, in my opinion is way to high. But, also i would understand why they would do that, because a lot of people watch the Super Bowl so it is a good idea to have your product featured in a commercial in it. If you have a well thought out commercial that the public loves, chances are your product will sell more. Some of the content of the commercials were just dumb. I mean the dorito one with the goat. I don't see why they would need a goat to eat all the doritos. Yes, i do believe some of the commercials have become to risque.

  26. Liza- WOW!!! I'm like the 29th person to say this but, I LOVED THE OREO ADD!!!! I think that the whole thing was so funny! Even though I wasn't really paying attention i was spitting my sides that whole time! I do think that the cost is WAY to huge. If people can spend that much money getting people to eat more than one cup of rice a WEEK!! I don't think it's that worth it. Why do people care about that kind of stuff anyway? Can't they walk into a store and pick out what they want for themselves? COME ON PEOPLE, MAKE AN EXECUTIVE DECISION. I think stuff like the GoDaddy add was really inappropriate. There are KIDS watching that and they'll start to think that it's okay to have that kind of stuff on TV. I don't know about you but what that add was saying to me was "Hey buy our product. We are targeting scum like you because we know you'll pay to much for it and we'll get more money. The only reason we've made this was to get trash like you to do this to yourself." I don't think that is the kind of thing to put on our media.

  27. Isabel-My favorite super bowl commercial is a tossup between the "God built a farmer," Ram commercial and the Budweiser commercial with the horses. I liked the Ram commercial, but I liked that the Budweiser commercial sort of symbolized and reminded me of a famous saying, "if you love something, set it free... If it comes back its yours, if it doesn't come back it never was yours." I also think the fact that a company spends so much money on a super bowl commercial is sort of irrelevant to the consumers. When I see a Doritos commercial it doesn't make me say, "You know what? I want some Doritos!" No. Without any knowledge of the profit a company makes off these commercials I would suspect that it's not increasing their sales by much, but I honestly don't know if the commercials are worth what a business is willing to pay. If someone wants to pay 3.8 million dollars I guess it's their choice. I think some of the commercials displayed this year were inappropriate, or at least for young children that may be watching! I was sitting on the couch with my 2 year old cousin watching a commercial that had a 20 second passionate kiss, so yes I do think the super bowl commercials are becoming somewhat risqué!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Raquel- My favorite super bowl commercial was probably the Doritos commercial with the goat and the Oreo whisper war. It was really surprising because I would never think that so much money would be spent on a 30 second commercial. No offense but it's ridiculous. I guess it depends if the product is good and the commercial is worth watching. Then it may be worth it so that the company gets more consumers. Yeah oh my goodness that kiss was not only weird and awkward for everyone watching the super bowl but disgusting. The content in some commercials has really changed from back then and I think that it's not really persuasive if you have like the whole commercial of people kissing and that really wasn't worth the 3.8 million dollars spent.

  29. Lauryn-My favorite commercial was the Doritos one. I like this one because of the sound the goat made when there were no more Doritos. I think the cost is outrageous. I think if they are going to spend that much money it should be worth it and not waste time. Personally I think it is not worth it. Some of the commercials are still the typical super bowl commercials. But some are not so good. Infact some she be banded. I think that Go daddy is being a little risqué.

  30. Aubrie- My favorite commercial is a tossup between the Doritos commercial and the Oreos commercial because I thought that they were funny and also prevalent for the purpose. I think that the amount of money that these companies have to pay for a thirty second commercial is insane and I wonder why you would ever spend 3.8 million dollars on commercial. So in other words I do not think that it is worth the money and effort to have a super bowl commercial. I think that all of the money that is spent on super bowl commercials each year could be used for much more valuable reasons than a silly commercial. Some of the commercials that I saw were a little risque by the content of the commercial.

  31. Sydney- my favorite Super Bowl commercial was the horse one where the horse was raised on a farm with its owner. It got sent off to go racing. At the end it returned to the owner. I liked it because it was really cute. I can't remember what it advertised though. I think it's crazy that they spend that much money just to advertise their product. People like me just remember the commercial as the horse with its owner and not the product. There is no sense in spending all that money. There is definitely something else they could do with that money.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wes- I thought the Oreo commercial was my fvorite because it made the commercial funny in a good way. I couldn't beleive the amount of money used for just 30 seconds of your time, but if it gets new customers, then I guess it helps them. Some of the content now a days have gotten a little more gross with things like people kissing up close to the camera (I don't even have to say what the company was). I think we need to go back to the commercials a long time ago.

  33. Keelie: hahah my favorite was the underwear commercial. Not because of the half-naked guy, but because my uncle made a big deal about it. Bailie and I turned away when it turned on and said something like “no. just no.” my uncle was like “… Yeah. I heard a lot of people were complaining about this commercial.” Then my grandma and mom said “I’m not complaining.” Hahah. That is unbelievable how much it costs. If no one wanted to buy your product before, why is it better when it’s played during the super bowl? No, it’s not worth it. We could do a heck of a lot better stuff with that money than watch dumb commercials. Oh I hate some of the commercials! It makes me embarrassed that people think we want to see that stuff. We need to be more respectful of men and women’s body. Showing a girl in an inappropriate dress will not make me want to buy your hamburger, thank you very much Carls Jr.

  34. Claire-my favorite commercial was for the truck about the farmer because it was a quote from the 70s. They spend way too much money on ads because we skip through them anyway. Yes some of them are too disrespectful and embarrass me.
