The Second Inauguration



On Monday the nation witnessed the second inauguration of President Barack Obama.  The catch phrase from the address according to MSN is “The possibilities are limitless.”

Presidential inaugurations, whether first or second, have embodied the spirit of the United States.  They have lifted the ideas of Americans and set the course for the direction of the country. 

Thomas Jefferson looked to unify the nation after a divisive election:

 "Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists. If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error or opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it."- March 4, 1801

Abraham Lincoln reminded the country of our need to heal during his second inauguration as the Civil War was coming to and end:

 "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations." – March 4, 1865

Ronald Reagan, in his first address, focused on the economic issues plaguing the country.  He looked to inspire and motivate the people.

"My fellow citizens, our nation is poised for greatness. We must do what is right and do it with all our might. Let history say of us, ‘Those were the golden years — when the American Revolution was reborn, when freedom gained new life, when America reached for her best.’” – January 20, 1981

Every president since Jefferson has tried to communicate the idea that America’s best days are ahead of us.  We are always striving to be something better than what we are today.  It is part of the idea of being an American.  I like to think each of us as individuals and as a country are always trying to improve ourselves and our nation.  We want to leave the world a better place for the generations that follow.

    I chose this quote because of how much I beleive it is true. It is like how we love to do something where we reach our goal and do things that make others feel happy. We also love to think outside the box and come up with ways for the future to continue. This means to me that you are happy when you accomplish something and grow with more creativity.

  2. Tomas- "Ask not your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."- JFK. I like that quote becuase there are a lot of people who only care for themselves. Those are not the good kind of people. Volunteers for certain foundations or events are good people. But the people that are the greatest people, are the people that are out there risking thier loves for their country.

    I like this quote because I interpret it as excepting diversity. It doesn't matter what religion you belong to or your skin color or anything just that you are good person, regardless of race or beliefs.

    I know Tomas already has this one, but it is one of the only quotes I know. It means that you shouldn't expect anything to benefit you if you don't put any work into it, because nobody will benefit if we just sit at home and keep expecting something to happen.

    I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli.

    I chose this quote because people usually think that the president is a perfect person.The president almost has to be perfect in our minds. This quote shows that a president is a normal person.

    I chose this quote because it is something that we all will come across one day. It means that if you believe you are doing the right thing you should not listen to what others tell you, you just keep on going until you succeed.

  8. Keelie: First, there are a lot of wise quotes from presidents. Every man has something good to say, but I like this one from Abraham Lincoln. "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." I really think that is true. I like that because it makes you think about all the different cultures, races, and everything else that makes us unique. I chose it because it also makes you think of all the problems in America. I want to ignore those things, but I can't. We all need to help diminish the problems, but they may never be gone. Even when we fall, at least we can say we tried.

    "How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg." -Abraham Lincoln

    It is my favorite quote from an American president because people can say what they want, but it doesn't necessarily make it true.

    But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people, and do our best to help them find their own grace. That's what I strive to do, that's what I pray to do every day.

    I like this quote because Theodore Roosevelt is my all time favorite president. He was a really good leader. This quote shows that you don't need to talk loud to be heard. If you carry a big stick it shows you mean business and people won't cross you.

    I chose this quote because it is important that we remember our history and control what happens instead of just letting stupid suspicions control our destiny. To me it means that we should control what happens to us and that we shouldn't let others control us.

This reminds us to be open-minded and be Christ-like in our actions. I really like this quote. I hope everyone one day can live by this.

    Yes,I realize Patrick chose this too. I love this quote because we always want changes in the government. People say they hate Obama and other presidents. What we dont realize is that all the presidents, from Washington to Obama, just want what is best for our country. While we are complaining about what thier doing wrong, the president thinks "Would you like it better in Africa?" We are in the most developed country in the world. The USA has done its job. Yet we refuse to pay back the Government's kindness.

  26. Iasbel- "Speak softly and carry a big stick."-Theodore Roosevelt. This is my favorite presidential quote because, He says that you can have a convoration with someone and be civilized not needing to scream and yell at each other. If the person you are talking to becomes agressive, you are prepared to fight back. The quote also reminds me of the gun laws the current president is trying to pass, because people who want to carry firearms dont need to use them but they want to be prepared to fight back as well.

We should all take part in our country and then and only then can we expect the country to pay us back.     I chose this quote because it stood out most to me and my favorite President is Abraham Lincoln because he got through one of the most notorious battles the United States has ever gone through. He led all America to freedom. This quote means, to me, that it is better to be called a fool then make yourself look like one.

You can always forgive him, but never forget thaeir names because of all the bad things they have done to you. This quote means to me what the meaning is of the quote what I just said above.

    I like this quote because it reminds me that everything we are afraid of on this earth is just an illusion. Everything that we are worried about now, isn't going to mean anything when we are in the afterlife. People these days are so worried about clothes and furniture.
