Hurricane Sandy

It has been five weeks from Hurricane Sandy and its devastation to the East Coast of the United States.  Places in New York and New Jersey were decimated as a result of the storm and its aftermath.

The cost of the storm’s devastation is still undetermined.  These costs include rescue efforts, evacuation, structural damage and property restoration.  Below is a link which shows before and after pictures of the New Jersey Coast.

While tragedy is always horrible to read about and witness, it is also within these times we are able to witness to strength of the human spirit and the incredible lengths people are willing to go to help their neighbors.

One such story comes from New Jersey.  Within days of the storm’s devastation, New Jersey Strong was organized as a non-profit organization.  Its sole purpose is to aid the families victimized along the Jersey coast who were victimized by Sandy.

The organization has focused its efforts on clean up.  They are gathering and deploying numerous volunteers to homes, parks, and other locations to clean up the debris and attempt to restore property to the condition it was before the storm.  While they can use money, their primary request from the public that want to be involved is manpower.  They have faced some challenges, but with concentrated focus and relentless effort, they are providing hope to many people who have lost their homes, cars, photos, and sense of security.

The focus, passion, and commitment they have shown to their community are inspiring.  This is a grassroots effort to reclaim the New Jersey shoreline, which has been an important place in their lives.

Do you know anyone who was affected by Hurricane Sandy?  What obstacles did they face and how did they overcome those obstacles?  What do you think about the efforts of New Jersey Strong?

  1. Nikita- No. And no obstacles either, since I don't have family over there. But, I do think the efforts of New Jersey Strong are not wasted ones. Everyone over there has been affected, and parts completey demolished. At this point, any effort there is is needed. Anything helps.

  2. Nathaniel- Well, I know 4 people that were in the storm, and they were all family friends. One of the obstacles that one friend faced was that she had run out of fuel/gas. Because of this, she couldn't go anywhere (in a car). She managed to get to her brother's house, and he helped get some more fuel for the car. Her cell-phone had also died (I think) so she was able to call us from her brother's house. So I realized that no matter what problems you're facing, you can always count on your family. I have not heard of the New Jersey Strong until now, and think they are doing something for a great cause. I REALLY hope none of them lose their lives trying to save someone else. That would be very sad, but I wish them the best of luck. It's a good thing that we have people like them to help, if we didn't, all of these death tolls would be a lot higher...

  3. Thomas B.- Only my mom’s friend, who lives in New York. Mostly she couldn’t get to work and to overcome it she had to work in her house. But working in your house is much different in New York because you only have a small apartment. I thought it was amazing how much a single organization could make that much of a difference, especially in a a more suburban area.

  4. Grace- My cousin Nicole lives in Brooklyn, New York. All of the public transportation was closed so you could only drive if you owned a car, which most people do not. Also, her work was closed for five days. My cousin had to walk and bike everywhere. I think it's great hearing about groups of people who work really hard to help other people in times of trouble. I heard about a lot of celebrities who helped out as well, including Kirstie Ally, who made packages of needed things for families and sent them there. Actually, maybe she drove them there. I don't remember. It's comforting when you live in a place where hurricanes and other natural disasters can occur to know that there is always someone there to help you and risk their lives for you.

  5. Reed-Yes, My Aunt Sherry lives in New York. Her Power went out and had to move into a hotel. She couldn't get to work and she had to cancel a lot of her meetings. The East Coast is really trying hard to pick up the pieces and make it look like this never happened. There efforts are really making a difference and i think that this will all be over soon. That is if they keep it up. The east coast has a lot of people and a lot of businesses. Sandy took down a lot of businesses, Companies, and sadly enough people. The scar that Sandy left on the U.S. was kinda like a warning. A warning that bad things can happen to even the richest, smartest, or happiest people in the world. I am glad that it did not happen to me or anyone i love but i am also very sad about how many people died and how many families suffered from there lost ones. For some people Sandy was jut a little wind but for others it was the worst thing that ever happened to them. Thats why we have to stick together threw thick and thin and never lose hope in ourselves. Cause everything will be better. " After Rain there is always a Rainbow" as the famous saying says. The message of this blog is that people die and people suffer but most of all we can never stop loving each other.

  6. Ryan- I don't have ant family where Sandy hit so I don't know very much about the obstacles people had to face. I do know that it took a huge toll on their way of living. People are now homeless and without power. It's very sad. I think the efforts are great. It's amazing that people are taking the time to help others who were affected by the storm. The problem is most people don't know in depth what happened, so we should take the time to share this video with others to get them to help with horrible tragedy.

  8. Sydney-- I don't think I know anyone that has been affected by Hurricane Sandy. I think the New Jersey Strong is a great organization and it is helping out with the effects if Hurrican Sandy. The efforts are amazing that they make. All the support that they get is definetly needed there and they need to continue it for as long as they can!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Liza-i actually do have family that was effected by Hurricane Sandy. My family lives in Med-ford, New Jersey. Fortunately they weren't hurt of killed but they did lose power like everyone else in New Jersey. My aunts and uncles made sure everyone was safe and was not hurt. My uncle Scott moved his family into the basement with blow-up mattresses to sleep on, in case the trees fell down on their house. My cousins Luke and Rachel were moved into the Living Room away from the swaying trees. I had a favorite place in New Jersey, the boardwalk and Long Beach Island. the island I'm sure they can fix but the boardwalk makes me very sad. I think the efforts of the New Jersey Strong are the most amazing thing ever. It proves that we care about other people inn America, even though we are in devastation ourselves. It amazes me at how people care so much for so little in return.

  10. Bailie-Luckily, I don’t know any one who was affected by Hurricane Sandy. I think the efforts of New Jersey Strong are great because the are helping families and others who were affected badly by Sandy and really need help and support.

  11. Tomas-I Know that many people were affected by the hurricane. One of them was my brother. he went to DC but was still hit by Sandy. he is okay now but he told me that they had the power go out for days and the connection was bad but thank god that he is okay. the had been okay by eating the food that thye were provided and was given care by the college. New Jersey Strong is inspirational to many. they had been helping families that had lost homes or lost family or friends. What they do is super inspirational to all the people in America.

  12. Petie-I do have an Aunt and Uncle over in New York, but they were not affected, so I do not know or think that they had to overcome obstacles. I do know a few people who were affected, but not to bad. They were without power, but only for a day they said that it was tough, and was also scaryNew Jersey Strong is an amazing program. Many were affected in the hurricane and they need help. They may be without power, water, and food. It is a great way to strengthen the community and overcome even the really bad disasters. New Jersey Strong is a great way to show that we can get through tough times, wether it is weather related or economically related, we could get through it.

  13. Nate- I don't know anyone affected by Hurricane Sandy, but I imagine that for those who do know people that were affected, it must be very worrying. As for the help program, I think that it is a smart, caring action that shows that people really do care.

    Heart-warming!

  14. Luke-If you are referring to someone I know personally, then I do not know anyone caught in that disaster. New Jersey Strong's efforts have good intentions, and will do it in my book. The Organization tries to help as many people as possible. With love and compassion on their side, I am certain they will emerge victorious on their mission to save the citizens in that area in dispair.

  15. Andoni-I have an aunt and uncle that live in D.C.;i don't think that they had anything more than some stormy weather. On the other hand i have some family in Staten Island. The power was off for several days. Due to that they had to evacuate their houses and went somewhere safe until it was okay to came back. The damage done to the east coast seemed irreparable. All the business and homes were obliterated just like that. It seemed as if there was no way anyone could recover from that. Jersey Strong is changing peoples lives little by little. It's organizations like Jersey Strong that define America. It shows that we will never be overcome by disaster. It shows that no matter how bad things may seem we can achieve any goal if we BELIEVE.

  16. Patrick-Fourtunatley I don't know anyone seriously affected in the storm, but the pictures in the video where enough to show me how sever the devastation truly was. Some obstacles they overcome were anything from losing their homes to losing a pet. But on the other hand this obstacles were no match for the dedicated volunteers of New Jersey. They came together as a community and proved to us that anything is possible if you set a goal (in this case a clean community) and pt your mind to it anything can be done.

  17. Liam~ I am glad to say that I do not know anyone who suffered from hurricane Sandy. Furthermore, I really don't know anyone who lives on the east coast. Well, I it is always inspiring to see people come together and quickly recover from a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy.

  19. Rylie- No, I don't know anyone that was involved. Most of my family lives in Idaho, Oregon, and Michigan. For the people involved , it was probably terrifying. People's houses and cars and businesses were destroyed. They overcame these obstacles by their faith and everyone helping them. If you brake a leg, you are going to need some help up. That is exactly what we did. The whole country helped to rebuild and house, houses and people. Well. it was really awesome to see men and women step up and help them so quickly. I was overjoyed to know that we have not lost hope. yet.

  20. John-my mom has a friend in New York named Felicia, she was effected by hurricane sandy, she and her family didn't have power for 2 weeks and the kids couldn't go to school for to weeks. I 'am not absouletly sure if they had water or not ,but they were still effected by the superstorm. This family had to be pacient and they eventaully got a lot of things back and my family is revealed by the recovery. I think the efforts were awesome from New Jersey strong they helped rebuild houses among the east and all of our countries supports have been really helpful and neede for those who have been effected by this horrible storm.

We live in a world with so many things that could happen at anytime. Its nice to know that maybe if you needed it there are people who will come to your aid.

  22. Lauryn- Yes I do know some one who was affected by Hurricane Sandy: my uncle. He did not have power, food, clothes, and at one point had to stay in shelters. We try to help them overcome theese obsticals but we all know its going to take time. I think what New Jersey Strong did was amazing. I hope I world changes and more organizations are created to help people.

  23. Aubrie-My mom has friends in New York City. They were not very badly affected besides power outages and bad weather. They had a hard time getting to their shop because the public transportation system was down.
The people that were involved in the storm had multiple obstacles such as power loss, no fresh water, no transportation because most people did not have cars so relied on the public transportation system. These were only some of the problems the people faced.
I think that the people involved with Jersey Strong are some people who are willing to help no matter the cost. I think this is a good thing to do. People should help others when they have nowhere to go and have to rely on others to get the help they need.

The devstation done was terrible, but with a lot of help it can be fixed. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

  26. Sean-
No, but the one "act" of charity that was most smiled upon was for people keeping the internet going and phones charging, which shows that in less than 130 years we changed from being hardened frontiersman who fought all acts of nature to having our day ruined or moping around because the internet or our phones died, and the music isn't anything to be proud of either.

p.s. hurricane sandy tore right through cuba.
    p.p.s. who changed Yotusba?

  27. Megan- I personally don't know anyone on the East Coast. I can't really talk about obstacles either. I do think that Jersey Strong is a great organization. It is always wonderful to see people come together and help each other out. I know we can all get through this if we do it together.

  29. Raquel- I don't know anyone that is affected from this storm but I hope that everyone is staying calm and trying to look on the bright side that God will help them during this period in their life. I'm glad they have decided to trug along and stay in the fight by doing the little they can do by simply cleaning the ruins the hurricane caused.

  30. Hayley: Yes they had school off due to snow. They could not use the roads. I think it was a good idea to have the people work together to help others. I'm glad that they could clean up the city, house the people with no homes, and help give food to the hungry. I'm glad that through all the storms everyone stayed safe and did not panic.

  32. Claire-No, I don't know anyone affect by the Sandy Storm, but I know about hurricanes and storms because I used to life in Amarillo, Texas when I was very little and my mom lived in south Texas most of her life. I remember one time when my grandparents were staying with me and my sister while my parents were in Boise looking for a home for us. There was a storm and tornado that damaged some homes and places and flooded the streets. My mom told me about a time when I was even young living there that a storm broke our skylights and roof and we had to get a new roof. The bad weather in Amarillo is one of the reasons we moved to Boise to get away from tornados.
