Tuesday of next week marks the eleventh anniversary of the attacks on the United States in New York and Washington, D.C. While truly tragic, it was also a day which demonstrated the incredible will and strength of the human spirit. There were as many stories of heroism as there was destruction. We witnessed countless acts of bravery and selflessness. And these are only the stories we know. Many of the incredible stories forever died with the victims.
The
following is a brief timeline of the day’s events.
At 8:45 am, the
first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The crash instantly killed hundreds of innocent
people and trapped hundreds more above the 110th floor. While emergency crews sprang into action, a
mere 18 minutes later, a second plane crashed into the South Tower. It was evident to all, this was not a
coincidence, the United States was under attack.
At 9:45 am, a
third plane crashed into the Pentagon.
The jet fuel caused a devastating fire causing a small structural
collapse.
15 minutes after
the Pentagon crash, the South Tower collapsed.
It was less than one hour from the time the plane crashed into the
building to when it fell to the ground.
At 10:10, the country became aware of a fourth
plane wreck. United Flight 93 had left
the Newark airport late. 40 minutes
after departure, terrorists took control of the plane. The passengers on the plane, aware of the
events of New York and Washington, decided to take action. They overtook the terrorist and in the
process crashed the plane into a Pennsylvanian field. All aboard were killed instantly.
At 10:30, the
inevitable occurred. The North Tower of
the World Trade Center collapsed. While
the nation watched in awe, the brave firefighters, police officers and other
city officials continued to respond to their call to duty. Due to the devastation created when the Twin
Towers collapsed, four other building would fall to the ground during the
day.
As the day
concluded we began to hear the devastating carnage from the day. In New York City approximately 3,000 people
were killed, including 343 firefighter and paramedics, 23 police officers and
37 Port Authority officers. In
Washington, DC, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed at the
Pentagon in addition to the 64 people on board the flight. An additional 45 people were killed in the
Pennsylvanian field from Flight 93.
How
do you think life in America has changed since September 11th? Besides what you just read, what else do you
know about the day? Do you think the day
should be remember as a tragedy or a triumph? Why?
Justin- I think America has changed since 9/11 because we are much more prepared for something like this to happen. We have much tighter security in Airports, Subways, and other public uses of transportation. Our border control from Mexico is much tighter now, though that probably doesn't have to do with terrorists, just security in general. Besides what I just read I know quite a bit about 9/11. I wrote a report on it so I had to memorize all the times and people that died from 9/11, and the number of firefighters that got lung cancer after the event. (40% of them did.) I think 9/11 should be known as a tragedy and a triumph. it was a tragedy that so many died, but it really showed the best in the American people, and the love that they have for their country. From the passengers aboard United Flight 93, to the firemen and police officers that rescued people from burning Twin Towers, America showed what they were truly made of that day.

DeleteThis isn't a chat room people
Deletethe unknown meanie...
Deleteliza- what do u mean and yes that person is right this isnt a chat room
DeleteNathaniel-There is a LOT more security now than before. My dad told me that there were some Indians that looked Al-Qaedan that owned small shops around America. They were just murdered because of what they looked like. People thought they were the enemies and well... yeah. This day is viewed as tragedy from many other countries, but some American's view it as a triumph. The people in the plane stopped it from hitting the White House and the other places they were supposed to go, and died bravely. They all deserve some respect.
ReplyDeleteHow do you change the picture?
DeleteSo, I spent the whole night trying to figure it out. (Just kidding, but it took a while) On YOUR post click the Student3. It will take you to a page showing things about the profile, and on the right of the page, it will show your pic. Click on it, then do whatever you want!
DeleteNathaniel- By the way, I didn't change the pic. Someone else did.
DeleteWes- I still can't figuire it out. Please give me a better explanation!?
Deleteclick on ur profile. make sure ur signed in. top right corner itll say edit profile. click on that. youll find ur way from there
Deletejustin btw
DeleteWes-Thanks.
DeleteWes-We have learned that there are people that want to hurt America, and that we now can protect people better like with our new tower coming soon. All I know that also happened on the day is that a lot of families lost there homes because of it.I also think that this should be remembered as a triumph and a tragedy. It is a triumph because of how it tought us that we should protect ourselves from the terrorists around us and it is also a tragedy because of how a lot of people died and how many famalies are now without friends or famaly.
ReplyDeleteAlso, First for Student3:{)
DeleteWes, we need to figure out how to change the picture.
Deletethat was Nikita by the way
DeleteMegan- Guys, you go to YOUR post. It says the student you are next to it on the left. Click it. Your profile comes up and it gives you the option the change your profile pic. You can take it from there!
DeleteNikita- Now we know that there are people who don't like the U.S. and the ideas it has and we now have more security and would be more prepared if something like that were to happen again. I know that there were people on the outskirts of the city who helped all those escaping the destruction by housing them and making food. They might have not made the news, but they still helped on that fateful day. I think the day should be remembered as a triumph because it shows how America can come together in a crisis, whether it was taking over the plane from terrorists to putting out fires to making PB&J sandwiches for people escaping the falling city.
ReplyDeleteHa! 1st girl!

ReplyDeleteReed- I think American citizens have changed since 9 11. I think that People in other countries typically don't like us as much. So we have more security now and we are stronger, More powerful and over all a better country.People got trapped in the rubble some made it out some didn't but even though a lot of people have died i think that they still run through America. The twin Towers were struck down by two planes. Terrorists brought them down. It was all responsible to Osama Bin Laden. Later in our lives we took down Osama. 9 11 is something that we will never forget and will be a reminder that we will stay the best country ever
Petie-I think that 911 should be forgotten not remembered. We shouldn't remember the terrorist attacks but instead how we rose over the chaos. We should still be mad at Osama yet thank him for showing our country that we can overcome obstacles as small as gas prices raising 5 cents to as big as 911. People from over 15 blocks away were evacuated from their house, and they still haven't rebuilt the pentagon. I thin that 911 was more of a triumph because we stood tall and we fought against all the doubt coming our way.
ReplyDeleteAndoni- Since the devastating attacks on 9/11 I believe that America has changed substantially. For starters, nobody had to go through all the security checkpoints, bag checks, and body scanners that we have today.I think this is a good thing.People probably feel much safer, now that the security is much more efficient. Most of what i know comes from a video i on the news. (9/11 should be remembered as a day that many innocent lives were lost. While awful things happened i think that people can look back and see how brave that people were. They didn't care about losing their lives, all that mattered to them was getting as many people to safety as possible. This disaster showed that people are still good.It showed us that as Americans, if one of us is hurt we all are, and we can help each other and come back from tragedy
ReplyDeleteooooohhhh ya student 20!!
Deletejustin haha nice job andoni:P
DeleteI have student 20, too...
DeleteKeelie: I think American life has changed. Now when we go to airports, we have advanced technology that helps us see if there are bombs. Also America has changed in thought, too. Muslims have been discriminated by some Americans who think, just because they're Muslim, that they're terrorists or hate our country. Honestly I didn't know much other then we were attacked by terrorists and many people died so this was very informative. although this was a tragedy,I think it was more of a triumph because of how we handled it and how we recovered as a Nation. I'm sure the victims are proud of their country, because I am.
ReplyDeleteGrace-Life in America has changed since September 11 because of security. There are a lot more restrictions in airports now such as you have to remove your shoes at checkpoints and no liquids above 3.4 ounces are allowed through checkpoints. I know that a third building with 47 stories also fell later around 5:30 P.M. No plane hit it, though. I suppose this day should be remembered as both. Lots of innocent people died that day and for those families who lost loved ones, it is a tragedy, but also it kind of brought our country closer together. Lots of people helped to clean up afterwards and save the people in the buildings. For a moment, no one in Washington D.C. cared if they were democrats or republicans or whatever, we were all just Americans. We are closer now.
ReplyDeleteThomas-There is more security and there are more people aware of what could happen. I don’t know much else about September 11th ,but I read somewhere that there were around 19 terrorists hijacking the four planes. I think it should be remembered as a triumph, because we were able to over come our sadness.
ReplyDeleteLife in America has changed because of security. Befor 9/11 airports were not as safe. There were no body scanners or bag checks that we have today in our airports. Today airports have much better security and are more safe. Now people can go on a plane without worrying about there plane getting hijacked or someone on the plane with a bomb. The technology in airports now have made it safer and things can run much more smooth. 9/11 was a terrible tragedy and it showed how us Americans can come together. That day a lot of lives were lost, and people risked there lives for others. People were very brave that day and showed a lot of courage. All that mattered to people that day was trying to get as many people out of the buildings safly. There were many heroic stories and it showed how much peple care for our country. When we all come together we can over come anything. This day should be remebered as a triumph because we can over come so much. Even though Osama Bin Laden tryed to bring our country down we over came some huge obstacles and it showed how when we come together we can do anything!
ReplyDeleteSorry that was me Lily
Deletewho was that
DeleteIt was Lily
DeleteMegan-I think that America is much more thankful for their law enforcement heroes. I too am so thankful for them and I'm proud to be an American. I don't know much more than what I read. I pretty much just know the basics. I think this should be considered a triumph. I think this because we as a whole country came together to look tragedy in the face and over come it. I'm honored to be living is such a great nation.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I like the werewolve. A little freaky but cool!
DeleteBailie-thanks! I changed it!
Deleteduh
DeleteHEY WHO CHANGED MY PIC!!!!!!!
DeleteAubrie- Yes I think that life has changed drastically since 9/11 because if it didn't matter that much to the United States then they would have already rebuilt the twin towers(the world trade center's). Another thing that I know about 9/11 is that not only people died because they were killed in the buildings, that were on the street ran into the buildings and helped tones of people and ended up dying for the other people. I think that we as the United States should remember this day as a triumph because that was a very hard transition to overcome but we stuck together and faced the horrible tragedy and still remember that day and all of the people that died in those buildings.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think life in America has changed since September 11th? Besides what you just read, what else do you know about the day? Do you think the day should be remember as a tragedy or a triumph? Why?
ReplyDeleteTomas-i think that life america has changed into realization and revenge.America celebrated when we killed Bin Laden.but before that, the the realization part is that they need to higher defenses and hunt down Bin Ladin.i really dont know anything else besides stuff in the article.i think the day should be both because when the buildings crashed, millions of lives were lost so that would be the tragedy part. the triumph part is that we learned a lot from the tragedy and we got revenge on the terrorrist that caused this crap.
Tomas i copied the questions so i didnt have to scrool up and down. and justins icon isn't a teddy bear. :{(
ReplyDeletePatrick-Life in America has definitely changed since 9/11 by increasing our secuirty nation wide and totally changing the way of travel. Air plane flights used to be easy and kinda fun but now they are a hassl and harder with security, and cameras every where it makes you feel very cautious instead of happy to go to see your family or friends other places in the world. My cousions neighbor brought a very tragic story to my awareness when her husband died on 9/11. he was on flight 93 and did the most heroic thing that you could have done that day. He was the person who stopped the plane from crashing into the white house. He took all the men on the plane and planned the attack while calling his family to say he loves them. You know the saying "lets roll" that came from him and that was the last thing he said before he took down the terrorist and crashed the plane in the felid. I believe this day is to be known as a trihumph and a tragedy because we all came together and saved many lives but a tragedy because of all the deaths and sadness across the country. this is a day we will never forget.
ReplyDeletei think i changed my pic
Deleteyhaaa, its so fluffy im gonna die!!!!!
Deletehahaha good one!!
DeleteLiam- The most notable thing that has changed since 9/11 was the increase in airport security. Before 9/11 a person sitting in an isle seat could look straight up and see the pilot working the gears in the cockpit. To a terrorist this lobster on a silver platter waiting to be eaten. after 9/11 we have added things like, more security officers, the "pat-down", and better metal detectors. There has not been another plane incident like 9/11 thanks to this improvement. Fact: Boise airport got Most Secure Airport award from Homeland Security. Besides the plane crash into the towers, pentagon, and into a Pennsylvanian field, there were other major events that happend on 9/11/01. President Bush was informed about the incident in New York at around 9:00. President Bush at that time was reading books to children in an elementary school in Florida. Immediately the President was taken away for two reasons. One reason, he had to be kept under protection in the case if there were a 5th plane scheduled to strike wherever he was. Two, he needed to meet with his speech writers on how he was going to adress the country. The president's speech was simple and clear, we will find the man responsible and make him pay the ultimate price, the price that 3,000 New Yorkers Paid that day. 9/11 is a day of remembrance, a day when we remember how we all joined hands, whether you where a gang banger, or a business man, we all did what was right. There weren't people running into Best Buy grabbing all the could carry, they reached out a hand and helped anyone they could. Thus I believe that we should celebrate this day as a day of triumph, a triumph over ourselves to go and stuff our pockets at Best Buy, we did not do that, instead we helped each other. 9/11 is also a very sad day, just about every time I see it on the news, the sudden urge will come to cry. So we should also remember this day as a day of sorrow. This day will stick with us for the rest of our lives.
ReplyDeletedang i thought no one would be longer than mine o well-patrick- nice job
DeleteLuke-Life in America has changed greatly after September 11th.All airports now have airport security, so that no one can sneak into a plane with a weapon. We also know that no one crashes a plane into a building unless they are a terrorist. I don't know a bunch about 9/11. But of course I'm bright enough to know enough about it to successfully complete this paragraph. The terrorists did not land one of the four flights into the pensilvania field on purpose. The terrorist pilot crashed because the passengers on board forced their way to the cockpit and forced him to crash. There is also a movie on that. 9/11 should be remembered as a tragedy because of all of the civilians, policemen, firefighters, military personal, and paramedics who died. This is just a bonus story. I heard that someone who worked on the top floor of the world trade center took the day off to take his daughter to her first day of kindergarden on September 11th. On that day, all of his fellow employees died. The End.
ReplyDeleteNate- Life in America has changed a great deal since 9/11. We now have tighter security, a war in Afghanistan, and there used to be a war in Iraq. I honestly don't know much about 9/11 other than what I just read and what I knew beforehand, which isn't a whole lot. I think 9/11 should be remebered as a tragedy, but also a triumph. Many lives were lost, but 9/11 really showed the bravery of the American people at the same time.
ReplyDeleteNekane- since nine 11 Americas security has changes it’s a lot safer. Traveling has changed you can only bring certain things on a plane. It was a huge tragedy for America and caused us to go to war many lives were taken and 9/11 changed everybody lives forever. I think it was a tragedy.
ReplyDeleteLiza- Security is a lot tighter now and your not supposed to say terrorist in an airport or some big city like New York. I know that people took back the 2nd plane and it fell somewhere( i don't know where) and the people knew they where going to die but they didn't want to die at the hands of a terrorist and someone so bent on destroying America. It should be remembered as a tragedy because so many people died. It should also be remembered as a triumph because it shows how well America can pull itself together out of such a scary and horrible time.
ReplyDeleteAdriana- Life in America has changed greatly since 9/11 because i think that we are alot more prepard if something like this were to happen again, and our security is alot more thourough and particular about what you can or can not bring on airplanes, subways and other public transportation. I dont know much about 9/11 other than what i just read. I think the day 9/11 should be remembered as a triumph because to think of all of the people on those planes who tried to stop the plane from crashing into the white house to protect their country and others that they would sacrifice themselves to protect others and that they're are good people in the word. I dont think that the people who died would not want you to obsess over their death, but to remember them as a loving husband, wife, dad, mother, etc.. i mean sure it wa sad that thousands and thousands of people died (and im blessed that no one in my family was harmed) but they died protecting our country and others. they died thinking about others and not about them saying that they are gonna die and everyone should be sorry. Thats why i think 9/11 should be remembered as a triumph. A day that as we Americans will never forget.
ReplyDeleteRyan- I think that we have better security so no one can get on planes with anything that resembles a weapon. I was really little when this happened, the only thing I really remember was my dad being really upset. I think that when we think of this day it’s both triumph and tragedy. So many lives were lost, but we also showed the world that we can’t be messed with. If you get us we get you back.
ReplyDeleteBailie- I think America has changed since September 11th because everything changes no matter what. Other than what I read I also know that some people jumped from the buildings So they wouldn't burn in the fires that were in the buildings. I see 9/11 as both a triumph and a tragedy due to the fact that so many people died that day. I see it as a triumph because 9/11 showed how strong of a country we really are because we pulled ourselves back together and by doing that made us stronger and closer together.
ReplyDeleteNatalie- America, in my opinion, has definitely changed due to 9/11. We remember the innocent people who died and the brave firefighters who risked their lives to save those inside the towers. The families of the victims remember this day, and it has surely changed their lives forever. As for if it was a tradegy or a triumph, I'm going to go with triumph. Even though thousands of American lives were lost, we have shown that the Amerivan people are resilient. We rebounded from the attack on Pearl Harbor, and we rebounded from this. We remember this day as someting we can be proud of; all the firefighters, and citizens from the street who saved lives. All in all, this day was a definate triumph for the American people.
ReplyDeleteHayley: America has changed since 9/11 because we have more security and are more aware. I know that on this day America became more united. We also showed how brave firefighter, paramedics, and any person of the street can be. I know that some people were running in the towers before they collapsed to try to save others. They knew that they might die in the process but they still did it. I think that this was a tragedy and a triumph. It was a tragedy because many people lost their lives. It was a triumph because America became more united that day.
ReplyDeleteThe United States has changed quite a bit since 9/11, we have better technolgy with security, and people, as Hayley said, are more united, we now are more aware of things. Well, i don;t know much about 9/11, but I do know that we tried our hardest, as a united country, to help save those people. It made me sad and happy, when those people in that plane took action, knowing they may not servive. This day should known as both tradegy and triumph, because people died and they had know idea what was going on, people were commiting suicide. Moms and Dads, Uncles and Aunts, Brothers and Sisters. It truely made me sad, but knowing that we came back and came together to help, knowing that they may not servive. I remember a guy had helped people get out of one of the towers, he never made it out. Alot of the people he helped, lived. He saved so many lives. So, it is also a triumpth to our great country.
ReplyDeleteoh, this is Rylie.
DeleteSydney---- life has changed so much since them. Everyone is more cautious of their actions. In airports, they developed security. The security officer have to check your bagage to make sure u don't have any weapons. They also have to scan you.We have a bunch of people ready for something else bad to happen. The army stands ready. What I know about that day is that some terrorists from a different country planned an attack to crash down the Twin Towers and they also attempted to do the same to the Petagon. It didn't really work out when they tried to do it to the pentagon. I know this day was one of the worst days in american history. I recently watched a movie called Extremly Lound and Incredibly Close. This movie is about a kid whose dad dies in the Twin Towers. It made me cry! This day was very tradgic. I think of it as a tradgety more than a triumph. There is probably some good that comes out of it too. If was very devastating when all the people died. They never planned for this to happen. They had no idea what to do. So people luckly were saved by God. There were a bunch of firefighters fighting for their lives to try and save these people that were trapped. That is why it is a little bit of triumph and tradgey. We will always remember that day 9/11 :'-(
ReplyDeleteRaquel- Since then our way of life has changed so much because, now you can't see the pilots when you walk in there is a wall in which no one can go in, this is obviously so that this doesn't take action again. The security in the airport is very high tech. now. One thing i know from this day is that a survivor Florence Jones was on the 78TH floor of the south tower and when she heard that the north tower got hit instantly she managed to make her way down to the 77TH floor. Once she reached the 77TH floor the 78TH floor was hit by the second plane. Florence Jones was blessed by God to make it out of the 25, being the 18TH one out. Really this day is remembered as a tragedy because this day started out as a really nice day not a cloud in the sky but, then this had happened and basically turned it upside down. Loved ones were lost and many were injured and i can't see how this could possibly happen in a split second. 9/11 was an extremely sad tragedy across America but we came out as one.
ReplyDeleteJohn-since nine eleven a lot in are life has changed especially are security, ever since that day are security has made the laws a lot more stricter for example on planes they have made the security more stricture by taking off your shoes and letting them check your bags. A guy my uncle knew from college was one the plane heading for the white house he knew that he had to take the terrists down or many people in the white house would die so him and this guy opened the cot pits and and took the terrist down that he risked his life for our country that shows a lot. 9/11 was an awful day but ever since that our country learned that we need to make more security and be more aware of the things in our life. it was a really sad day especially for the familes who have lost someone and the people who risked there lifes for our countrie, that day are countrie learned something and that thing made our lifes a lot safer and better for the USA.
ReplyDeleteLauryn- Life in America has changed so much since 9-11. In the airports we have advanced security. They check every think you have from a pocket knife to a bottle of shampoo. The technology that we have today allows us to have x-rays. One time the security checked to see if i had a weapon in my pony tail! At the time I thought it was ridiculous but once I got on the plane I realized it was for my own safety. Everyone is more aware about how low a plane is flying or how tall a building is. I know that there was one flight of stairs that stood standing. In fact when I went to New York I saw them there. I always wonder what people in the building would do if they knew it would still stand. I also remember something about a bomb in the subway underneath the world trade center. I am very glad that they are building a new building there because it says that nothing can destroy our country! I think that 9-11 is a tragedy because it killed many people and it has changed our lives.
ReplyDeleteClaire-Life in America has changed since 9/11 alot ! there is so much more security. Before 9/11 they barely checked peoples bags now they check everything you can think of. Another thing that has changed alot is that now the pilot has a locked and secure door when he flys the plane so no matter what happens in the back the pilot can control the plane without anyone taking over.I think 9/11 was a tragedy because so many people were killed and so many things and buildings were destroyed it costs a ton of money to replace ,fix, and clean up after 9/11.
ReplyDeletesean- well, america created more jobs thanks to the t.s.a. but are the number one cause for missing flights, and somehow toenail clippers are not allowed on a plane. and 9/11 was also the birth of
ReplyDelete" 'Merica" as some people say. But it is sad how some people take their religions too far, but 9/11 was a pebble toss in a puddle compared to 15th century religious persecution in south and middle America, which added with the us cavalry slang "Injun" and what would follow after spotting an indian make there be a rock thrown in a puddle comparison.
Todd- For one some changes were made, such as you are not allowed to bring liquids on the plane. At one time we could bring just about anything. Due to security changes, but I guess it really is a good idea and a good change. You never know what some might smuggle on the plane. So many people’s lives have changed and we are ok with the laws. Many others could have died if not for our new rules. I think that we should believe and make this a triumph. We will not let these types of events happen again. Also, we have lots of new jobs in the military and security.
ReplyDelete
