I typically refrain from giving my opinion about the topics
I write about. I would rather read what
you think than have my thoughts and opinions shape your ideas. While I still hope for that, after reading
about some of the lunacy of May 1, 2012, I can no longer hold my tongue.
On May 1st across the country May Day protests,
some tied to the Occupy Wall Street protests, declared this a day to up the
public protests against the 1% of the population controlling the wealth of this
country. Great. It is each person’s choice to stand up for
what they believe in and question our society and government in the face of
anything which may infringe on our rights and our liberty. That being said, this constant protest has
reached the point of absurdity in many places and with many people. They have taken this idea of equality and
fairness and turned it into a ridiculous rant against the wealthy. Many have chosen to make their protests
violent, disruptive, and chaotic.
If you read the papers or search the internet you will find
multiple stories concerning arrests, disruptive protests, and other gathering
coordinated by the Occupy Whatever City groups.
What fascinates and irritates me is, “What do they want?” They are concerned about the 1% of the
population controlling the political and economic systems of our country. If this is there problem, what is their
solution?
Regardless, I am not one of the 1%. But I do not believe or plan on giving any
one group, wealthy or not, the power to decide anything about my life, liberty
or my pursuit of happiness. This country
was built on the beliefs of valuing and respecting each individual. I know this because I can vote. I know this because I get to choose my
profession. I can be whatever I want to
be and so can my children. They are not
held down or limited based on their economic status.
The United States of
America is the greatest country in the world.
For hundreds of years we have been evolving into what we are, but our
foundation is still in line with our founding fathers. That does not mean we do not have
problems. We do. Giant problems that need to be resolved. But the idea of redistributing wealth goes
against everything our country was based on.
You can do anything you want to if you are willing to work hard and
dedicate yourself to your goals. That to
me is the bigger problem in our country. We have lost our will to work
hard. We want things to be given to us
and everything to be fair. All I know is
that the things I really have had to work hard for or continue to work hard
with are the most precious things in my life.
The hard work is what makes it all worth it.
I am impressed with some of the protestors. I think they have valid concerns and would
like real change. Unfortunately it is
the knuckle head antics that are getting the press.
What in your life have you had to work hard for? What challenges did you face when trying to
achieve your goals? How did you overcome
the obstacles?

Jacob- I have been working hard at school and the sports i play. Sometimes it was difficult for me to accomplish a certain skill in basketball or lacrosse. In school i had to work hard to get a good grades. I kept trying when i couldn't do something in sports and i studied for tests in school so I would get good grades.

ReplyDeleteCatie- I have worked very hard at school and soccer. I try to be the best player I can and to get really good grades. I was totally committed to soccer and really tried in practices and got some tips from a coach of things to do at home and i studied really hard. I overcame the obstacles by never giving up and keeping a positive mind.
ReplyDeleterobert-hard work? whats that? just kidding.... but really until you get a real job or get into something that you want to do for the rest of your life, isnt that hard work? cause if were going to spend weeks doing that one thing wont we have to find something to make it fun while doing it so we dont become insane? It would be hard to find something fun to do while sitting at a desk crunching numbers for your boss so you can make a measly income to survive and possibly support a family of four in an economy where china might eventually come out on top. but not for a while. so until then we still have to find something interesting to do while at our desk job or whatever job your gonna be in. SO make sure its the right one for you. The challenges i faced for stuff like getting A's in school for a whole report card is amount of sleep. Cause i love playing video games and wish to work for a company with graphic design animations for them, but playing and doing homework are two completely different things which usually ends up in a grey area where i have to finish my homework before i go to bed and then once im done i want to play videogames till 3 am so i do. then i have to rinse and repeat the next day. how did i overcome the obstacles. lets just say im not over the top of the obstacle yet....
ReplyDeletesmiley face for win? :D
Deletetrekster ^_^ (Nissa)- I work hard in school, trying to get good grades. I think my biggest obstacles involve studying and math. I'm still working on the studying part *shh... science*, but in math I overcame my biggest challenge -the material itself. Last year, I was in the standard math book, having an awful time. However, I took notes. Those scraps of loose paper were pretty much my lifeline last year. Now, (miraculously!) I'm in Pre-algebra. I still have problems, but know how to overcome them: ask questions, follow the examples, take notes, and... remember to learn from your mistakes; don't fail, then just sit there and repeat the error. When it comes to math, it's actually okay to be a TINY bit OCD with notes etc. Also, the little-known monthly quiz bowl tournaments are really hard to study for, since the lady who organizes and writes all the questions gets topic themes from watching TV. Example: History - Famous Americans BEFORE 1776.... *there weren't that many... they were British!* Another hard challenge that we nerds (or geniuses ^_^) of quizbowl have to study and work to overcome.
ReplyDeleteAaron- I have had to work hard to get into different choirs and to preform in those different choirs. I faced the problem of school interference and having to practice 24/7. I overcome these by becoming a better student and becoming optimistic.
ReplyDeleteJacqueline-I've had to work really hard on school work and dance to get where I am at. I had to give up a lot of spare time and I had to really push threw the pain of over working my feet. I worked extra hard to strengthen my feet muscles and leg muscles. I also tried to open up my schedule more and use my time wisely. Of course though, all the hard work payed off! :)
ReplyDeleteMatea(tea)- I have worked really hard in school and in sports. sometimes i just write stories for fun. Some challenges for school was sometimes things would get hard. In sports i might meet some challenges when i play against other people. And when i write stoies, i get writers block. I over came my obsticles for asking for the teachers to explain the subject that i have difficulty on. In sports, i try my hardest and keep going against the stronger. Eventually, i will beat that person. In writing, i just keep on getting ideas, then write them in a story.
ReplyDeleteAzi loves math- well I had a challange with math starting with 4th grade tell I got to 7th grade when Mrs.Russell became my math teacher. ReplyDeleteThe thing I have to work hard at is making the all star baseball team. I wanted to make the team because baseball is my favorite sport and I wanted to play with my friends. The first year I played in East Boise I was the small kid that no one knew and I had to work really hard to make the team. I made the team because I worked hard ,I didn't mess around, and I'm a good team player. To overcome these obstacles I worked 12 months a year and now I make the team every year.
Dillon - I had to work to learn how to ride a horse. Some of the challanges that I faced were controlling all of the diffrent parts of my body at the same time, moving in rythem with the horse, and staying still in the saddle. Another problem I faced was being able to trust such a large animal that could stomp a hole in me if it wanted to. I overcame these obstacles by makeing the same mistake over and over again untill I got it right.
ReplyDeletePeter-I have to work very hard in hockey. I have to learn to skate, stickhandle, pass, and shoot. The reason I work so hard at hockey is because it is a fun sport to play. The obstacles in my way a mainly just losing hope that I will be a very good hockey player. I overcome those obstacles by coming out with a positive attitude every day and trying my best.

ReplyDeleteSena- I have to work very hard in order to maintain good grades and to train for soccer. Sometimes I don't do well on tests and that makes it harder to keep doing. In soccer there are a lot of obstacles. It is sometimes hard to always play your best 100% of the time. I still love it though! I overcame these obstacles by never giving up, training harder, and playing more for fun then just to be stressed!!!
ReplyDeleteAmaia- Almost all of my life I have had to work hard for the extras I want in life such as clothes, electronics, airfare to places I want to travel, and camps. I work on whatever jobs that I can get my hands on. The challenges I tend to face is the effort in the hard work along with the drive and perseverance to continue. I usually have to think about what I want and the fact that I will never get it unless I work hard. That usually motivates me.

Emma- I have had to work hard in order to get many things. The first thing is my grades. In order to get all of the electronics, clothes, and sometimes even to attend sports I have to keep my grades up. Another big thing is to always do my chores in order to get my allowance for things later in life. My parents always motivate me to do all of these things and I know that it will feel great in return if I keep up all of the hard work in everything I do.

ReplyDeleteI have worked hard for a lot of things in my life. Eaening money is one of multiple. My challenges I have to face is to keep my grades up to play sports and all those other things. I just need to keep my grades up. I keeped my head up and i had motivational talks from my prent and my brother.
Ryan-You are always working for things no matter how big or small. Probably on of the harder things I had to work for are maintaining my grades.I would get a good grade and then the next grade would be a bad grade. Its was challenging to keep going on and getting the the better grades when i have grades that make me sad.I just keep going on knowing if i do better i wold fell a lot better.
ReplyDeleteKatie h.- i have always worked hard in school and dance. I have had obsatcles in math and science in school and I overcame that by studying aneeded and asking for help when I needed it. In dance there are many physical obstacles to get better and i over came them by practicing really hard.
ReplyDeleteGabi- I have had to work hard to get good grades and I work hard in every sport I play. To succeed in these things there were obstacles like bad grades or not making a team that I tried out for in a sport, but these things just motivate me to work harder and not give up. If I didn't try then I wouldn't be getting better. To get good grades I have to study and do my homework, for the sports that I play I have to practice, like with dance I have to stretch and practice at home. I work hard and I can overcome these obstacles and I get better everyday. :)

ReplyDeleteI struggle a lot in science. Last year math was my worst subject because I just didn't understand it but mrs Russell has done a great job helping me. My obstacles in science is studying. I hate to study! I over come my obstacles by studying a little each night so I don't cram it all in one day. Stephanie

ReplyDeleteCaleigh- I've had to work hard for the right to regain my computer time. By that i mean in the 5th grade my grades were the worst and my parents made so i could not go on the computer and i love the internet so I had a hard time with that. Some difficulties were like giving up free time to redo homework and all that. I would actuuly get really upset if I did not to well on homework or tests i would just shrugg it of most of the times. And how i got over obsticles were realizing that it would be really embarrassing to get held back and it would be better in the long run.
ReplyDeleteAlice- I have to struggle to maintain straight A's through out the year and do well in all my extracurricular activities. Through diligent study and focus I've managed to keep all A's accept for one B last quarter. :( It's taken even more focus and energy to still excel in my out of school activities as well as in school ones too. Great coaches and teachers have helped me attain my success.
