Women's History Month

March has been designated as Women’s History Month.  The Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Park Service and other government agencies have partnered in paying tribute to the past and present women who have done so much to shape and progress our world.

This year’s theme is “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment”.  As we have talked in class, education is the key to all future success.  Whether it is developing a nation, building a community or empowering a group of people, with education anything is possible.  Without education life is not only difficult, but obstacles can be immoveable.  Education is the key to freedom from whatever holds you back.  This insight was not always so obvious.

While women have always made significant contributions to our country, it is not surprising to me that as more women are entering and completing college that we are seeing more and more women in high profile positions.  This is the first generation with more women enrolled in college than men.  This is truly incredible when you consider social bias against higher education for women was dominant until the 1970’s.  Up through the 1970’s college majors and degrees were often limited to your gender, whether that be through actual college requirements or societal pressure.   Today, women are afforded the same opportunities as men.

Much of the progress can be attributed to Title IX legislation.  Title IX prohibits gender discrimination by any institute receiving federal funds.  Title IX provides equal access to education, facilities, and scholarships to women.  In addition to academics, women’s participation in athletics has increase by 900% in high school and 450% in collegiate activities.  The impact has been incredible.

What women stand out to you as making significant contributions to our country and why?  What do you think of Title IX and its impact?  In your lifetime, what “firsts” do you think you will see from women?

  1. Dillon - Rasa Parks really stand out to me not only as a fighter for black rights but a fighter for woman as well. To help fight for women's right by not giving up her seat for a white man on the buss. I think that some of the reason that she did that was because she was tired of being treated like the weaker sex ; back then thought to be women. I think that the tile 1X is a good name. I think that the impact that the 1X has had on the world is a great impact. I think that I will see a women president.

  2. Taylor- Ruby Bridges really stands out to me in history. She really inspires me because she had all that courage going into that all white school and she was younger than I am now. I always remember watching the movie on he during school and thinking about how scared she was on the inside but never showing it on the outside. That is true bravery. I think title IX is great. Women need a whole lot more appreciation than what they get. We do just as much work as men and maybe even more. I think I will see the first woman vice president and president.

  3. trekster ^_^ nissa- For me, Marie Curie stands out as #1 in history. She was the 1st WOMAN recipient of the Nobel Prize and discovered 2 elements: Ra and Po (radium and polonium). She also started a fleet of x-ray vans for the armies so many men could be x-rayed, using radium to help identify fractures, etc. on the battlefield. Title 1X is great, but I've read some articles that says a woman with, say, 4 yrs of college, etc. degrees in a certain area witha certain job earns, like 40% less than a man in the same situation with the same job. It's [title 1x] absolutley great, don't get me wrong, but there is that thing in the professional world, the um.... gender boundaries that affects salaries and how they're treated in the workplace, work being judged *sometimes* not strictly on quality/quantity, but if a man or woman did it. I am 100% positive that I will see a woman president (I hope so, it's the 21st century people!!) Also, if/when we get to Mars in my lifetime, maybe a woman astronaut heading to the Red Planet. What would be really great is if a woman doctor/scientist came up with a cure for cancer, ALL cancer, perhaps via a microscopic nano(s) that can be injected into the organ tissue and blood stream, etc. But, I digress into a topic that should probably be discussed in science ^_^
Women's rights and their achievments have SERIOUSLY come a long way and I hope I get to see more great things happen, and maybe be a part of them.

  4. ~Vince~ I agree with both Dillon and Taylor. Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges were great leaders and did amazing things to make our world what it is now. Both of these women should ALOT of courage and bravery. They also stood out to me because they never gave up in fighting for what they wanted. They are the people who stand out most in my mind as great women for our world. I think that Title IX is great because it gives women a chance to do what they are good at like sports or governmental jobs. I think without Title IX our world wouldnt be the way it is. The impact of Title IX is huge it allows women to be more respected and get less dicrimination. i think i will see the first woman president.

  5. kordell-

I have to agree with Dillon. Rosa Parks was a great leader and did amazing things to make our world what it was now. Rosa Parks showed a lot of courage. The main thing that stood up was that she never gave up fighting for what they wanted. I think the Title IX is great because it gives a women a chance to do what they want to do in the world. The impact of the Title IX allows women to be more respected.

I think Susan B. Anthony was a great person. She didn't accept the innequality of men and women . She fought for women's rights and she wasn't ting to quit until she had achieved them. Without her works women might not he able to vote. I think Title IX has had a huge impact on society. This has helped many women go to college and have the same opportunity men have. Ot has also helped women play the sports they love. I would like to see a woman become president. I think if this happened more women would run for president because they would see that another women could do ot then they four. If woman had the same rights as men in history I think the world would be better

  6. Jacqueline: Well for starters I think that Mrs Obama has made a huge difference in our world. She has really helped kids realize the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. That title has changed, what i think everyones life. Women are strong and smart and should be treated as equally as men are. THis title has really helped that like all of the things women are doing today! I hope in my life time that I will be able to see the 1st women president of the U.S.A !

  7. Ghost Adventures ( AZI ) - Well..... there are so many women in the world it's hard to choose. Maybe Ruby Bridges because she showed that all people all races and genders should go hand in hand no matter what. I think Title IX is an amazing thing because both woman and men are equal. Girls are as strong and smart as boys are.It has changed America.

  9. Steph- I think that Ruby Bridges really made an inpact on the united states! She is a great example of bravery. I think its good that she did what she needed to do to the get the kind of education she deserved. I would be terrified to go to a school where most of the people there wanted to kill me. I think IX is a great name. Women really need to be recognized for all they do and have done to the world to make it better.

  10. Amaia- I think Marie Curie was one of the women That stand out to me because she did so much with her life to effect others and she was so smart for being a woman and she was a real eye opener to what women are really capable of. I also think also women such as Rosa Parks, Hilery Clinton, Pearl S. Buck, and Clara Barton stand out to me for their huge impacts one society. I think it's great that we have something such as IX to make sure no sexism is allowed but I still think some businesses or industries get away with being sexist. I think in my life women will be first president, a female priest, a female pro football league.

  11. I wish to see the first women president. why dont women evre run? there just as equal as men so why not do run for president. i think it would be really cool to see the first women president.

  12. Sena- For me a couple of women really stick out. That is Rosa Parks and Michelle Obama. Rosa stood up for what she belived in. I greatly admire her for her courage. She changed history for people of the black race. Michelle has tried very hard to reduce the amount of obesity in children. I think she is doing a good job of warning people in our country of childhood obesity. I think women change a lot of things in our country and have changed the way it is today. Also Harriet Tubbman did a lot for the rights of people who were black I admire her strength and courage! I love the title IX. For me I always think that people are sexist. A lot of people say men are better at sports and faster and smarter and etc. I personally think we are all equal and love that we have equal rights. I hope to one day see a female football player on an NFL team and a woman president!

  13. Jacob-I think that all of the women who went and did something that was only done by men stand out. They did something that a lot of people frowned upon but them doing it helped other women to think about how they should live. I think that Amelia Earhart is a good example. She inspired many women to go and do stuff they want to do. I think the title IX is good and it shows how far our country has come in equality. It shows that we think everybody in our country counts. I think that I will see the first female priest in the Catholic Church.

  14. daniel - to me OPRAH AND ROSA PARKS HAVE MADE a huge difference to our world. oprah has helped people all over the world by giving them opportunities they could never experience and ruby bridges has been a big role model by standing up for whats right. also mother theresa has helped because she helped so many poor and sick people. i think title IX has really helped women and shows how close we've came to equality. i think we will see more women run for president and a female priest.

  15. Catie-The woman who stood out to me would probably be Victoria Woodhull because she was really brave and was the first woman to run for president. I won't have the courage to run for president in these times when woman are more equal to men, so just thinking about the amount of courage she had to do that in those times is dizzying. I love Title IX because it made sexism dwindle. I'm a girl so I hate to hear about how unfairly women were treated compared to now. I hope to see a woman president and possibly a woman pope. If the church became less sexist, than maybe it would be better.

  16. Peter- To me Rosa Parks really stands out to me because she wanted that bus seat so bad. She wanted to show the whites that all races are equal. I think that the Title IX is great because it says that if you do not follow this law you may. Be able to get arrested. I think that we will see woman presidents and priests. I also want to see a female baseball player.

  17. *:)Alice-Oh gosh there are so many women that have made a difference in our world...Hm, well Marie Curie, Ruby Bridges, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and-and-jeez I KNOW that there are a bunch out there I just can't think of any right now...:( Anyway those are just a few. Marie Curie had the courage to say 'Hey guys mind if I join you in making huge steps in science?' and she didn't care if people thought it was 'improper won a Nobel peace prize for it! Rosa parks and Ruby Bridges had the bravery to fight for their rights in the heat of segregation. And Amelia Earhart had the guts to go and fly an air plane when a man couldn't do it, and I know that sounds cheesy NOW but back then that was kind of a big deal. All of these women (pardoning Ruby, but she most certainly deserves the title!)made massive strides in making our world today and continue to inspire women and girls to day. I think that Title IX is GREAT it will stop men from putting a damper on things because they think women are too 'fragile' or 'not smart enough' for the work. Finally, maybe, a little more equality will be spread around. I'm really hoping that soon there's going to be a first woman president and the first Christian woman priest. (fingers crossed!!:b )

  18. Caleigh~ I think a Eleanor Roosevelt was a very powerful woman in the U.S. because she was a supporter in Woman's Self Awareness also in the Red Cross. Also she was a powerful woman in office. She was in office more than 3 times. I think Title IX is great! Its giving equal rights to everything and an equal chance at that. I think we'll see first woman president and maybe even the first female African American president.

  20. Ryan- Rosa Parks made an impact to me.Rosa Parks stands out to me because she fought for what she thought was right. That told never give up on what you think is right even if no one agree. I always like they people fight for what they think is right. Freedom, Independence or for what ever reason.I think that the IX will give women more room to do stuff. Women have done great things for this country, you just got to let women try things. They might do a amazing for this country.

  21. Matea(tea)- Ruby Bridges and Rosa Parks are the two that stand out to me. The must have been so brave and scared. They both could have been killed. They are so important to me. If you were an african american woman back then. Would youi go to an all white schooland everyone hated you, evern the other african american children backed out. I would be so scared and not go to the school. Think about Rosa Parks. It would have been so annoying always in the back of the bus and getting yelled at all the time for no reason at all. I would be sooo scared if i sat in the front and all the big scary people that hate you are yelling at you. Both of them had some guts, i would have never done that. But if they didn't stand up for what they beleive in. Then we would still be like we were before. I think that the IX is a great thing for woman now. Freedom is changing over time and more people will be happy if EVERYONE will be treated fair, equaly, have respect, and have a voice to be heard. I want to see a woman as presidant. That would be a HUGE accomplisment for woman and our country.

  22. Emma- Today women hold the same jobs and responsibilities as men in many areas of employment thanks to the title IX initiative. Women that stand out to me the most are women in the military and government working hard to make a difference. They are heard today when before they were only aloud to have gender appropriate jobs such as secretaries, teachers, and house wives. I think in my lifetime I will see a women become president of the United States.

  23. Katie H.- The women that have made a signifigant difference are Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfree. Michelle Obama has helped promote a healthy lifestye in the U.S. which has helped many Americans to live healthier lives. I think Oprah has helped many people in the U.S. and around the world. I think Title IX is definently a good thing because it has helped women have equal rights. I think in my lifetime I would like to see the first female president and/or first female African American president.
