Dr. Seuss's Birthday

March 2nd marks the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  While it may seem trivial to celebrate an author of children’s books, it is hard to imagine what life would be like without the influence of The Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham.

Now that you are older I can imagine you may have lost an appreciation for the genius of Dr. Seuss and his work.  But as you watch the number of first graders and kindergarteners walking around looking like Thing 1 and Thing 2, it is difficult to deny the cultural and educational impact his work has had on society.

In addition to celebrating his birthday, this year they are releasing a movie “The Lorax”.  While it seems like a simple, enjoyable children’s story, it is also a political and social statement by Dr. Seuss concerning the over industrialization of our world and the fear of losing our natural resources.  Dr. Seuss often used his stories to not only entertain and engage children in reading, but provide insight into the world for the parents reading the books.  One of the most gifted books at high school graduation is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”  It’s not so subtle message about how to live your life, through the good times and the bad is extremely relevant to people entering into new phases of their lives.

Did you read or were you read Dr. Seuss stories when you were a child?  If so, what is your favorite and why?  What do you think about the younger kids at school celebrating his birthday?

I was read Dr Seuss when I was little. My favorite part of his books were the weird places the stories took place. My favorite book of his is Green Eggs and Ham. It taught me that you should always try something new and mabey you'll like it. If you don't try it you'll never know. I thought it was funny seeing the younger kids with wiskers on their faces. They probably thought it was just fun to dress up but it was really showing respect to Dr Seuss. I think he deserves respect because he was a great author.

  2. JACQUELINE: I LOVE DR. SEUSS!!!!!!! My favorite book was the, well wow, I don't have a favorite. my favorite thing about the though is the different characters in each book. They are all bright and colorful and I loved them all. I think the celebrate his birthday because it was a day that the world's best imaginer was born. He is silly and funny and really captures the kids with his books. THat's why I think they celebrate his birthday and another reason is that he gives kids someone to look up to.

  3. trekster ^_^ (nissa)- I read lots of Dr. Seuss books when I was little, most of them famous. I don't remember the title of this one book, but it was full of peculiar questions, like, "why is your reflection upside-down inside a spoon?" just wierd stuff like that. I absolutley loved that book and the One fish Two fish book. I think it's great that little kids are celebrating this, the joy of reading. People say it's imagination or respect. They aren't wrong, but reading is certainly part of it. I remember being so proud when I could read One fish Two fish to my mom when I was little. Dr. Seuss helped me learn to read and I think that's a big reason why kids are celebrating his birthday. (that, and they like parties with dress ups and cupcakes!)

It is my favorite because it teaches a lesson. Dr. Seuss's books all have a moral that is one thing I admire him for. He had a big impact on most kids from our generation. I think that the kids at our school had a lot of fun celebrating his birthday. I don't think that a lot of his stories have been greatly recognized recently. IM SO HAPY A NEW STORY CAME OUT! dr seuss was a very very very interesting man. he was very creative toio. although i dont remember any dr. seuss books, ive seen movies, like the lorax. it was entertaining for littler kids, but not for older kids. i was full of wacky stuff. it had many many many colors in it. i think that the littler kids celabrating his birthday is a really really really good idea. it gives kids a chance to think about something else other than stressing on school. it also gives them history
