Thanksgiving

On Thursday across the United States we will be celebrating Thanksgiving.  The tradition of dedicating at least one day to thanks dates back as far as 1621 in the United States.  While the original purpose was to give thanks for a plentiful harvest, it has evolved over time to a day spent with family and reflecting on the riches we have in our lives.

From its origin to 1863, the date of Thanksgiving was decided on by each state independently.  It was not until President Abraham Lincoln issued a presidential proclamation to uniformly recognize the last Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving.  In the midst of the Civil War President Lincoln was looking for any and all reasons and methods to unify the country.  While it may not have meant much in 1863, the establishment of a national holiday started a day of tradition.  Whether it be the turkey, football, or special desert, we each have special family rituals while focusing on giving thanks for the many things we have.

Do you think President Lincoln was right to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday?  Do you have any special traditions in your family for Thanksgiving?  If so, what?  What are you thankful for?

  2. Sena- I think he was right to establish it. Almost all of our other holidays are selfish. This one is us telling what we are thankful for and thanking God for our lives. For Thanksgiving we always like to have cousins and grandparents over. We also like to play wii sports. I am thankful for all my family. Especially my sister, even though she can be mean she is always there for me. She and I have a lot of fun together.

  4. Jacqueline- Of course President Lincoln was right to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. My family has one kind of main tradition and that is watching football and football and the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NY. ( we don't actually go to NY to watch it we just watch it on the TV.) I'm thankful for so much, but mostly I'm thankful for my friends. They totally pick me up when I'm down and with out them my life would be miserable. So, To all my buds out there Happy Thanksgiving and eat all the junk you can! Eat up!!!!!! :)

  5. sci-fy geek/Nissa- I think that Abraham Lincoln was right to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. Traditions...hmmm... my dad hasn't been watching football as avidly as he used to, so football isn't it... Oh yeah, my mom and aunt swap off holiday dinners back and forth, mom usually does thanksgiving (a huge feast with left overs for weeks!) and my aunt makes lasagna (like, 6 layers) for christmas. However, this year, mom didn't do thanks giving because of her fall, so we had lasagna for dinner tonight. I'm thankful for a ton of things, but yeah, overall, my life is great to have because i also have friends and family and pets. I think being thankful for life pretty much covers it all.

  6. Taylor- Abraham Lincoln was definitely right to make Thanksgiving a national holiday (is anyone going to say he wasn't?)My family always goes to Twin Falls on Thanksgiving. And we always make cinnamon rolls. I have no idea why. Every year we switch off between the Fuchs side (my dad) and the Cowans side (my mom.) This year it was the Fuchs side and there were A LOT of people. There were 11 aunts and uncles, 11 cousins, 1 cousin in law, 1 2nd cousin, and my grandparents. And then we went to my other grandparents house and there were 4 cousins, 4 aunts and uncles, and my grandparents. I am thankful for my huge family.

I think President Lincoln was right to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Just think if it wasn't a national holiday we would miss out on a great meal.
My family doesn't really have any traditions, but we do get together with family that's in town and eat a good meal.
I am thankful that I live in America because we are luckier than most countries because we have a good government and we don't live in anarchy

I get to see all of my cousins which I never get to see. I am thankful for friends, family, a shelter, my parents, my dog, priests, church, a school, a good education, my parents have jobs, my neighbors, and last but not least food on the table.

  13. Alice(just alice for today)-Oh my goodness Abe Lincoln was right to make Thanksgiving a holiday!! It's a time for families to be grateful for what they have, no ones expecting any presents or anything. And always the day after Thanksgiving we make turkey jook.(a rice porridge sort of dish) I'm thankful for a bunch of things but I will only name a few food, family, friends, education, the truth, freedom, God, music, and a whole bunch more that probably would take up too much space!

  14. Natalia-I think Abraham Lincoln was right to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. Thanksgiving is a great holiday. A tradition my family has is going to one of my aunts or uncles house for dinner and before that we go to my grandmas house for lunch. I am thankful for my friends, my family, shelter, and a good education. Without these things it would be hard for me to be happy and survive.

  17. Stephanie- Yes I think it was a good idea for Lincoln to make a holiday for giving thanks. it is a good way to give hanks to God for everything and just spend time with your family. My family comes over from Seattle, Spokane, Denver, Montana, and Utah we all get together and have fun. Everyone stays at my house and they usually stay for a week. It's a total mad-house with everybody there. On thanksgiving we just had a big feast and we all enjoyed ourselves. Of course all of the ladies went black Friday shopping and all of the guys stayed homa asleep.I am grateful for my friends food shelter a good education and freedom. There are more people in the world who ar noteducated. Everyone in our class are very lucky to have been born into a family who can provide an education.

  19. vince-i think that Abraham Lincoln was right in establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday. thanksgiving gives us a time to spend quality time with our family and to appreciate all that we have. A special tradition that we have on Thanksgiving is we going to my Grandparents house and skiing. Then on Thanksgiving night we go to my cousins house and have a nice dinner. I am thankful for a lot of stuff but I am mainly thankful for my family, friends, and love.

  20. Daniel-yes, I don't think that anyone would think that Abraham was wrong for establishing Thanksgiving. It is a great holiday and gives us time for our family and gives us a time to think about what we have. For my family traditions we have one year with my moms side of the family and then the next year i would have it with my dads side of the family. What i am mostly grateful for is what I have, my country, and most of all my family and friends.

  22. I definatly think president Lincoln was right to have Thanksgiving be a national holiday. It is a time where families give thanks for what they have and spend time together. Every year I switch off from my dads side to my moms side of the family for Thanksgiving. Also, we all say something we are thankful for at dinner. And we pick out Kris Kringle's-- Where you pick a name from a hat and give them a Christmas present. It is a time I enjoy very much because I get to see my family and get a little laugh. :)

  23. Catie-I think that Abraham Lincoln was right to make Thanksgiving a holiday because it is the only season where we all spend time with our families and don't get things except for a fantastic dinner. My family traditions for Thanksgiving are usually going to a friend's house. We don't have any family near or in Idaho so we usually get invited to hang out with other people but sometimes we just eat alone. I am very thankful for love and happiness because those are the two things that keep most of us going. I'm also thankful for my friends because they make me feel happy and loved.

I absalutly think that thanksgiving should be a holiday because it gets families together and to spend time with one another. I have a tradition of my mom wanting to cook the meal and end up messing all of it up but its all good because we all get a good laugh.
