Tenth Anniversary - September 11th

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of one of the most tragic days in modern American history.  While the day began as any other day, it would end with images and stories of unfathomable death and destruction.  It was a day no one saw coming and no one will ever forget.

While truly tragic, it was also a day which demonstrated the incredible will and strength of the human spirit.  There were as many stories of heroism as there was destruction.  We witnessed countless acts of bravery and selflessness.  And these are only the stories we know.  Many of the incredible stories forever died with the victims.

The following is a brief timeline of the day’s events.

At 8:45 am, the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.  The crash instantly killed hundreds of innocent people and trapped hundreds more above the 110th floor.  While emergency crews sprang into action, a mere 18 minutes later, a second plane crashed into the South Tower.  It was evident to all, this was not a coincidence, the United States was under attack.

At 9:45 am, a third plane crashed into the Pentagon.  The jet fuel caused a devastating fire causing a small structural collapse.

15 minutes after the Pentagon crash, the South Tower collapsed.  It was less than one hour from the time the plane crashed into the building to when it fell to the ground.

At 10:10, the country became aware of a fourth plane wreck.  United Flight 93 had left the Newark airport late.  40 minutes after departure, terrorists took control of the plane.  The passengers on the plane, aware of the events of New York and Washington, decided to take action.  They overtook the terrorist and in the process crashed the plane into a Pennsylvanian field.  All aboard were killed instantly.

At 10:30, the inevitable occurred.  The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.  While the nation watched in awe, the brave firefighters, police officers and other city officials continued to respond to their call to duty.  Due to the devastation created when the Twin Towers collapsed, four other building would fall to the ground during the day.

As the day concluded we began to hear the devastating carnage from the day.  In New York City approximately 3,000 people were killed, including 343 firefighter and paramedics, 23 police officers and 37 Port Authority officers.  In Washington, DC, 125 military personnel and civilians were killed at the Pentagon in addition to the 64 people on board the flight.  An additional 45 people were killed in the Pennsylvanian field from Flight 93.

What do you know about the events of September 11th?   Do you think this is a day of tragedy or triumph for the United States?  How do you think the day should be remembered and commemorated?

  1. Aaron- I know that on September 11, 4 planes crashed in New York and Washington. I think this is a day of tragety for the U.S. because so many important men and women died for no reason at all on the horrible day. I also think that it was a tragedy because the planes crashed into many buildings for no reason. I think this day should be remembered by the families and friends of the people who died on that horrible day to be rememberd and recompensed

  2. Jackie- One thing that I do know about September 11 and that is that it has bound our country closer together. Terrorists tried to crash planes into important buildings that were in our economy, I do know however that one plain did not succeed in this horror and that the passengers took over to save many lives. This day I think was neutral, it was not triumphant, but in between because it bound our nation closer together. This day should be remembered in prayer. All students every year should at least have one lecture on what happened Sept. 11 and to know the heroism and grief of that day.

  3. robert-I know that on september 11th 4 planes left 4 different runaways at 7:00A.M. One was targeting the pentagon, 2 were targeting the world trade centers, and 1 was said to be targeting washington. It was brought down by the passengers of the plane, mid flight into the fields of Pennsylvania, sometime around when the planes hit the world trade centers. The crash killed everyone, the terrorists and passengers.
The world trade centers both fell killing paramedics, police officers, firemen, and men and woman trapped inside.
i think this day was a full on utter tragedy... but on the bright side of things, we have strengthened our security and level of awareness. And even now people still wish to remember this day with prayer and sorrow.
so... we already remember it enough.

  5. Sena- I know that on this day a man went back into the building that had just been attacked because he knew people where still in there. He ended up saving about 2,700 people. I think this day is a tragedy and a triumph. Tragedy because so many people lost there lives, so many heros died. It is a triumph because the U.S is a closer country because of this day.I think we should always remember these people. We should pray for there families but be glad that we are now a stronger country.

  6. Matea- All that I know about September 11 is that four planes attacked America. Two planes hit the Twin Towers. The third was crashed in Pennsylvania. The fourth hit the Pentagon. A man knew that the attack was coming. He saved 2700 lives in the buildings. This day was a tragedy for all the people that lost their lives, friends, and family members. It is also a triumph for showing that our country is strong and nothing can stop it. This day could be remembered through prayer and all the people that died. Could be known as heros for our country.

  7. Vinny-On this day, September 11, about 3 thousand lives were taken by terrorists. Two planes hit the world trade centers on this day. Also one hit the pentagon and took out two or three rings of the building. There is another plane that we think was heading for the white house that was taken over by people in the plane who saw the attacks before and thought that it was enough and that no more needed to happen. So the pane crashed mid flight in Pennsylvania. This day should be remembered as a tragic day but also a day of remembrance. It is a day of remembrance because we need to remember all of the people who passed away inn the tragic event. This day is a triumphant day because it shows that our country is strong and we are unstoppable.

  8. Dillon-All that I new before I whatched the videos on friday and this one was that two planes crashed into the Twiwn Towers, 1 into the Pentigon, and 1 crashed in a feild in Pennsylvania, that they thaught was heading for the white house. I think that this day was a tragedy for the people who died and there families, friends, and fellow works. I think that it should be remembered in prayer and in remeberence.

  9. Gabi-On September 11 over 3,000 innocent people lost there lives. Four planes where taken over by terrorists. The two were headed for the twin towers and the other the pentagon. All three hit there target. But the last plane that was headed for the white house crashed in a field in Pennsylvania because the people on board decided they weren’t going to let this happen. Every person that was in a plane died. In this day just ordinary people became heroes. These where the people who put others I front of them. The ones who put others lives in front of there own. This day was devastating and sad but it isn’t a a tragedy. It has made us so much stronger as a country and we know so much more. We have grown and become better. It was sad and awful and we will never forget. This day could be remembered in so many ways, a moment of silence, a prayer, being with friends and family, and just remembering the people who lost their lives and those who gave their life up for someone else.

  10. Amaia-The events of Steptember 11 consist of of terrorism that killed over 3,000 americans. Two planes crashed into the twin towers, 1 into the pentagon, and one crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, sparing the lives of many people due to an act of heroism preformed by the passengers of the hijacked plane. I think the day of Steptember 11 was a tragedy for the United States, because thousands of people died and the terroist struck fear into our lives. But I think that the events of this days also made us stronger. I dont think the acual day of these terrible happenings were a triumph, but i think the days that followed were. We got over our fear and fought back. It made us stronger individuals and a stronger country. I think we should remember this day by remembering the good and the bad that came out of this attack. The acts of heroism and the hatred of the terrorist. Those who dies and those that lost someone.

  11. Catie-On Sept. 11, 2011, 4 planes were hijacked. Two of the planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, one in the Pentagon, and another in a field in Pennsylvania. The plane crashed in Pennsylvania because the passengers heard about what was happening and they fought back. No one will ever be able to know each person's story and the little bit of help they contributed to spare another person's life, but we can help honor them by commemorating this tragic event by becoming stronger and by teaching all the kids of America about this tragic day and be able to make them a better person. This day was a tragedy in the actions that happened and the lives lost but it was a triumph that flared American spirits to become braver and to make a stand against what's wrong and help what's right. This day has changed our people and that change will never be driven off course. That change is making our country a better and more protected place and a home to all who live here.

  12. Alice:On September 11th four planes were hijacked by terrorists, three crashed into buildings in New York, both the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. The last and final plane crashed in to a field in Pennsylvania, people believe it was on a course for the White House but we can't be sure. The people on that plane are true heroes, they sacrificed themselves for countless others, if I had been in their position I probably wouldn't have had the courage to do it. Tree thousand people lost their lives that day, that's three thousand people who had their lives cut short in an act of pure hate, and wanting to crumble our country. But it didn't work, it only made us stronger and made our country even more united. To many that day is a tragedy and to many more it's not, but that's what makes it different it's both. Thousands were lost but it only made us stronger, and people we never would have known lived, were made heroes. We remember them with moments of silence, ceremonies, praying, but all of these things are done for the same purpose; to honor all the lives of the men and women who died to help others.

  13. Daniel-On September 11 over 3,000 innocent people died. Two planes hit the twin towers, one hit the pentagon and the other plane was heading for the white house until a plane filled with about 50 people sacrificed there life to stop the plane. This plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. This terrified everyone in our country. Even though this was a heartbreaking I think it is a triumph day. It made our country much stronger and made everyone realize how grateful we are for having what we have. I think this day should be remembered by prayers and something that thanks all the people that died for our country.

  14. Natalia-I know that on September 11 four planes were hijacked. Two crashed into the twin towers, one in the Pentagon, and the other in a field in Pennsylvania. I think its a tragedy. It's a tragedy because about 3,000 people died on this day. All of these heroes died to help others be safe. A lot of people were saved by these heroes such as firefighters, police men, and even people who worked in the twin towers. Even though people knew they were going to die in the hijacked planes they knew they had to die to save our country. I think we should remeber this by praying and remembering those who died and our heroes who died for us.

  15. Ryan- I kenw that 4 planes took off which were hijacked on septmber 11, 2001. One plane was heading to the White house which crashed in a felid in philadelpIa. Two crashed into the twin towers. The last one crashed into the pentagon. I thinck its both a triumph and tragedy. Tragedy becuse thousands of lifes were taken by the acs of terrorist. Triumph becuse we can improve by this. I thinck we should remeber this by silence and prayers.
We will never forget what happen on septmber 11,2001.

  17. NORIKO"NIKO"-I KNOW THAT ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 OVER THREE-THOUSAND INNOCENT PEOPLE DIED. THIS IS BOTH A TRAGEDY AND A TRIUMPH FOR THE USA. IT IS A TRAGEDY BECAUSE LOTS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE DIED. IT IS A TRIUMPH BECAUSE THE USA HAS GROWN STRONGER SINCE. THIS DAY SHOULD BE REMEMBERED BY A NATIONAL MOMENT OF SILENCE.

  18. Jacob- On September 11th, 2001, 19 al-Quieda terrorists took over 4 planes headed for the Twin Towers, the pentagon, and the white house. Both of The Twin Tower fell within 2 hours. The Pentagon was damaged sverely. The last plane was taken back over by the passengers. Unfortunately, the plane crashed in a feild in Pennsylvania. Everyone on this flight died. Almost 3000 people died in these attacks. i think this is both a tragedy and a triumph. Tragedy because so many peole died. Triunph because the message sent by the U.S. was that if you knock us down we will get back up. i think there should be a moment of silence for all the people that died.

  20. peter-On september 11,2001 over 3,000 people were killed in the plane hijacking that morning. There was 4 planes hijacked that crashed in twin towers ,pentagon, and a field in Pennslyannia. The only reson it crash into a field into Pennsylvania was because the bystanders on the plane fought back aginst tthe hijakers. We think it was headed for th White House.I also know that there was a guy in a red banndanna that went back up and down to take groups of people. He layed down his life to save others. I think it was a tragity because tousands of people died. Ithink we can remmember this day by biulding the twin towers again but ten stories higher.I alsooo think they should make a statue or fountain to remmember the guy in the red banndanna.

  21. Caleigh- I think was one of the saddest things ever to happen to our country. And it should've never happend. Thousands of people died for no reason what so ever. There were a lot of childrens with out parents from that tragedy. But shape our country. and nothing will us down!

  22. Nissa- I know that four planes were targeted toward various important building in the U.S. on September 11th. The first two planes hit the Twin Towers, and the third plane hit the Pentagon. The fourth plane was rumored to be aimed at the White House, but the passengers fought back against the terorrists, so the plane crashed in Pennsilvania instead of it's intended target. I think that this dady was a tragedy and a triumph for the U.S. in the sense that so many lives were lost, but a triumph in that the whole country bonded together, and we survived through it all. We can honor this day with a moment of silence and prayer, to remember all the people who died in the Towers, Pentagon, and in the plane in Pennsilvania.

I know that The events of September 11th were an attack against the United States. It involved four commercial airplanes that were hijacked. The planes crashed into the Twin Ttowers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.
I think it was both a tradgedy and a triumph. It was a tragedgy because we lost over 3000 lives of innocent Americans. It was a triumph because it bbrought our country's worst times.
I think this day shold be remembered by having a special holiday for the first responders and people who helped those in need.

  24. Stephanie-on september 11 4 planes were hijacked. two of them hit the Twin Towers. They fell after a matter of minutes. There were a lot of people killed in this attack. The third plane hit the Pentagon. 125 people were killed in the building and 64 were killed in that plane, including the pilot. In the fourth plane there were people who relized what was happening and they sacrificed there lives to save many more. there plane landed in a field in pennsalvania. The fouth plane was supposd to go to the White House, which the presidant was not in. He was at a school when this happened. Everything that happened on septemeber 11 was a tragety and we will try and prevent it from happening again as best as we can.

  25. Katie H.-I know that there were two plane crashes in New York, one plane crash in Washington D.C.,and one in Pennslvannia. This was one of the most tradgic events in U.S. history. This was a triumph beacuse it brought our country closer together. It was also a tradgity because of the lives lost on that day. Ithink a good way to commemerate 9/11 would be to educate other people about this day in history.

  26. \Belle- September 11 is a day America will never foget. On this day two planes crashed into the world trade center, killing over 3000 people. this day is a day of horrer and saddness, but it brought out the most american spirit ever known. the terrorist tried to do this to scare us but they didnt, we became closer as a nation and
learned that we could be defeted.Everyone can relate to 9/11 in my life its that my aunt lives in new york and watched the towers fall from the top of her apartment building, when she tells the story you can see how scared and sad she was and is, its a fear that will never go away and i think that, people should always remember this day because if you dont, the lives that were lost or the familys who lost them will be forgoten. its a sad and schocking thing to watch. 9/11 has made our nation stronger and more protected. the lives or firemen and police men who died are heros, and without there brave actions the people who did live made it.
    we will never forget. 9/11/01

  27. Emma- I know that on 9-11-01, four planes flown by terrorists crashed on purpose. It was an act of violence on our country. The terrorits had snuck onto the planes with concealed weapons, killed all of the pilots, and took over all of the flights. The terrorists were saying, do'nt worry everything is going to be okay, when really, in the end the terrorists main agenda was to srtike our nation by flying all of the air planes into national monuments. The planes were scheduled to go to different places but the terrorists had flown them into New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. Two of the planes crashed into the Twin Towers, another crashed into the Pentagon. The last plane was on its approach to the White House, when some brave passengers figured out by calling home that there was a terrorist attack on our nation, and their flight was in jeporady. The brave men fought aganist the terrorists and crashed into the ground instead of the White House, saving many lives, but obviously their lives and fellow passengers were lost. I remember this day as a tradgedy because thousands of innocent people had their lives taken from them, but also a day to remember how our fire fighters and police forces rose to our rescue and how so many lost their lives trying to help. Because of 9/11, our Naional Security is on high alert and we are more aware and prepared. Without this happening, there could be a high possibility of it happening again without our security today.

  28. Taylor- I know that on 9/11 2 planes crashed into the world trade center, 1 crashed into the pentagon, and 1 crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. I also know that when the 1st plane crashed, everyone thought it was an accident. But when the 2nd plane crashed, everyone knew this was no accident, the United States was being attacked. I think this was a tragedy that led to triumph. At first, there was no hope that we could stop this. But once everyone started to take action, we knew that we would get through this somehow. This made the United States a stronger, better country. This day should be remembered by saying a prayer and remembering all the people who lost and gave up their lives on 9/11.
