2010 - Year in Review

As the New Year begins, I like to take a look back at the past year to recall the triumphs and tragedies that shaped our live and dominated our media.

January

We began the year with one of the greatest and most tragic natural disasters in recent memory.  The small and poor country of Haiti was struck with a 7.0 earthquake.  The Haiti government stated the quake killed 230,000, injured 300,000 and left close to 1,000,000 homeless.  Relief efforts came from all across the world.

February
The 2010 Olympics provided the world with the chance to learn about the personal triumphs and stories of athletes from around the globe.  When all was said and done, the United States won the most medals with 37.  Additionally we were given the privilege of becoming familiar, either again or for the first time, with now the household names of Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller, and Apolo Anton Ohno.

February witnessed its second natural disaster in as many months.  Chile suffered from a major earthquake and minor aftershocks spread throughout the country.  While its devastation was not as great as Haiti, it would wreak havoc on the country which will develop into a story later in the year.

April

The I-pad and the next generation I-phone were introduced in April.  The world anxiously awaits the yearly announcement from Apple to find out what is next in the way of technological gadgets that will revolutionize the way we interact with music and other media.

May

May introduced the gulf oil spill.  We became aware of the potential disastrous consequences of drilling for oil in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.  The oil wrecked the fishing, tourism and shrimping industries in the Gulf States.  Clean up efforts continue.  Believe it or not,it is very difficult to get oil out of water.

June

World Cup fever captured the nation.  Many Americans were forced to watch the games with the volume off due to the vuvuzelas.  The traditional South African horn deafened those in attendance and wore down the patience of audiences.  The United States made it past the preliminary round, but continued to disappoint fans by not reaching their potential.

July

LeBron James dominated the media with his free agency decision.  After allowing himself to be courted by a number of NBA teams, during his prime time decision is chose to leave Cleveland and join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.

October

The tenth month provided inspiration and astonishment as we watched 33 men be reunited with the world after spending more than two months trapped in a Chilean mine.  The personal and collective stories of their survival provided countless hours of enjoyable news.

November

Mid-term elections were great for the Republican and bad for the Democrats.  After more than a year of a lackluster economy and other questionable political decisions, the country chose to revamp the House of Representatives with new Republican congressmen.

What do remember most from 2010?  How do you think 2010 will be remembered in history?  How do you think 2011 will be?  What would need to happen for you to consider 2011 a huge success?

  1. gabby- im first oh ya!!! what i remember most from 2010 is the summer. i had like the best summer ever. i think it will be remembered in history is the oil spill, the earthquake in haiti, the world cup, and the olympics. i think 2011 will probably better and worst than 2010. people can let learn from their mistakes of 2010 and stuff like that. i think 2011 could be worst in some ways because it was really cool how we came together and helped haiti. something to make 2011 a huge success would i guess having economy getting better and no more war(because that is really realistic).

  2. Marya- one thing i remember from 2010 is probably going to field of screams for the first time. Nothing that big. I think 2010 will be remembered by the Chilean miners who were trapped and Bieber's fast rise to fame (:
i think 2011 will be a good year. for it to be a success i need justin bieber to be number one on the lists and maybe just maybe have Obama be impeached. Which probably wont happen

  3. Luke- The thing that i will remember about 2010 is when the USA beat Algeria as time almost expired. Also Spain(the best team ever) won the world cup(I predicted that they would win). Andre Iniesta scored at the 116:32 second mark in overtime to beat the Netherlanders 1-0.
I do think that 2011 will be an ok year the u.s. i Think that it will be a good year since im a republican i also think that Justin Beiber will get shot along with other people the the main piont is that i think that there will be lots of shooting in the world.

  4. Ryan Z.- Ithink that 2010 was a really bad year because of the oil spill and the earthquakes in hati and chile. I also think that to say that anyone will remember 2010 as an individual year is ridiculous. No one is going to remember 2010 as a year, they'll talk about the teens (2000-2010) but no one's going to talk about and barley remember 2010 because nothing that's going to alter history happened this year. However I think that 2011 is going to be the best year ever (because 11 is my lucky number). No joke, 2011 is going to be the best year ever. You just wait and see, BEST YEAR EVER! One year from new years 2011 (when its1/1/12) Russ Mitchel will say " and on this day in history we begun best year in the history of man. 2011. And that's a look at this day on history." 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011

  6. Angie- 2010 was... not our best year. Yes, there was the Winter Olympics and the World Cup but there were many disasters like two earthquakes (Haiti and Chile), the oil spill, and the Chilean Miners getting stuck underground. It wasn't a HORRIBLE year though. For me, the year 2010 was good. My summer was really fun and stuff. But 2010 for others around the world, not that good. My new year resolution is getting a 4.0 average. I'm also going to try to work on my attitude. Hopefully, 2011 will be better. Actually I think that 2011 will be a great year!

  8. The thing i remember most from 2010 is that i moved from texas to idaho which you all knew but that is what i remembered most. i bet that 2010 will be most remembered for all of the things that you listed here which is probably why you listed them here. I'm not excactly sure how 2011 will be but im not so sure that it will live up to all that 2010 did. 2011 would have to do more and bigger things for it to be considered a huge succes , but its off to a pretty good start considering that just a few days into it, a major shooting happened in arizona.

  9. Danielle: Wow 2010 was a really big year! I remember a lot of friend time. I spent a large amount of 2010 with my friends;going to haunted places in Halloween. On my birthday some of my friends and I pulled our 1st all-nighter! 2010 will be remembered in history by the large earthquake in Haiti and all the deaths of the good people in America. 2011 will be a pretty good year, well every year gets better! 4 2011 to become a success we will really need to fix the economy and less war and more peace! :)

I am not sure how 2010 will be remembered in history because it was kinda a suckish year with the economy and stuff but there were some good things. 2011 i think will be a much better year than 2010.

  13. Atticus-The thing I remember most from 2010 was when the 33 clillian minars were pulled out of the hole they were stuck in for 2 months. I think that 2010 will be remembered as a crapy/heroic year. I think that to make 2011 an amazing year; the war would need to stop and my brother would be able to come home and/or all the nations would be able to make peace and stop bomming eachother and phillip stop obsessing over deadmau5 as he calls it (haha). I think it will be a good year. good luck in 2011!

  14. Maddy- The thing i remember in 2010 is when I had a family reunion and a memorial for my greay grandma ( that was during the summer and i went to pennsylvania). I think I will remember in 2010 is the oil spill, the miners thing, and the 2010 Olympics. 2011 seems like a good year so far and it will be a good year. For a big success is that i become a better basketball player.

  15. Morgan-The thing I remember about 2010 is all the disasters like the oil spills, the earthquake, chillian miners. 2010 was a very invent full year not just only for the world but for my family and I too. I had the best birthday party 12 years old. Starting the seventh grade was very fun and is still very fun. 2010 was the first year we could go to the dances. The dances are so much fun! I hung out a lot with my grandparents over the summer and that was very fun. Over 2010 I learned a lot. To make 2011 a success it needs to have fun memorable events. Hanging out with family and friends and having a good year of tennis ( playing good and winning)!!!

  16. Halle-2010 had its ups and downs and I remember most of the summer. Basically my whole summer was physical therapy and exercise. But then near the end of the summer exciting things started to happen. If you think about it 2010 wasn't a good year in some cases but in other it was. Some of the things listed above were disasters but others were great! I hope 2011 will be a good year. The first part of breaking dawn will come out so how great is that? To make it a good year I'm hoping not a lot of bad things will happen like earthquakes or the economy being even worse than it is now or anybody like Michael Jackson dying. So I'm hoping 2011 will just be drama free and fun

  17. josu- what i remember most form 2010 is when my baseball team went to the regional tournament in southern California over the summer. i think 2010 will be remembered as the year of disasters because of all the natural disasters. i think 2011 will be better only if the vandals win the national championship(probably not going to happen)
