Chilean Miners

After 69 days beneath the Earth, 33 Chilean miners are in the process of being rescued. These miners have been trapped 2,300 feet below the surface since August 5th. The rescuers have finally completed the 28 inch hole extending half a mile into the ground to retrieve the survivors and hoist them to safety. The men will be rescued one at a time, each taking approximately 20 minutes to recover. During the extraction, engineers will be monitoring the stability of the walls of the evacuation tunnel.

The gold and silver mine collapsed on August 5th. Rescue workers immediately began to search for the missing 33 men. Any attempt to enter through the ventilation shaft proves to be dangerous. The rescuers are forced to drill 6 inch holes from surface to the area which they believe the men located. After 17 days, a drill hole finally reaches the victims. They attach two notes to the drill letting the world know they are safe and well.

Engineers reinforce the 6 inch hole to make certain no rock or debris come down on the men and they are able to use the passage to provide supplies. The hole becomes the only means of survival. They use the hole to send oxygen, food, water, medicine, communication, and to the delight of all, tooth brushes and beer. While staying alive was critical, they must now turn their attention to survival after the catastrophe.

The aftermath can often times be worse than the tragedy. The men have been in extremely close quarters for over two months. They have had limited ability to move, no sunlight, and little interaction with the outside world. What they did have was hope. Hope and faith in God and their rescuers would be comforting to the trapped victims. An entire team of people from all over the world, including NASA, submarine commanders, and survivors of previous catastrophes have made themselves available to the miners to help them transition back into the world.

What would help you survive if you were in this situation? What does their survival tell you about the strength of the human spirit? What does the willingness of others to help in the transition tell you about the importance of caring for your neighbor?

  1. If you are trapped for that long than of course, the tangable things like water and food would help you survive. But also the things like hope and encouragement would help you too. Humans can do almost anything if they put there mind to it. including saving 33 miners buried 2,300 ft below the earth's surface. Humans must care a lot about others if they put this much effort into saving these miners. But of course if they didn't and any of them died than it would be like a disaster and every one would freak out so they pretty much had to but volunteers didn't have to volunteer but did, because they wanted to help there fellow humans.

  2. Marya- i think that if i was trapped in a mine, i would pray every day. the miners probably prayed and strengthened their relationship with God throughout the experience. the man from NASA saved these people because he cared and wanted to get them back to their families

  4. Phillip- I would of course need the stuff like air, food, and water. I would also nee stuff like room to walk around in because it wouldn't be fun being stuck in a small room with 32 other smelly guys. I would go INSANE!!! This tells you that if you have good friends and a strong will you can servive anything. I think it was really nice of everyone to help out like that. You would have to have guts to ask for help. I probably would have tried to solve it myself.

    I watching 300 :P

  5. Atticus- I,like Phillip said, would ovesoly nead things like oxygen, food, and water. I think that this tells me that the human sprit is extreemly strong... that is if you let it be that way, because if you are down and gloomy and thinking that for surten you were going to die then your chances of survivle are small. but then again if you have high sperits then your shances of survivle are much higher. Also the importance of carring for your neighbor is verry importand because if you because if you didnt the results could be death.

  6. Ryan Z.- I think that is is very cool how well these men handled being trapped in a mine for 69 days. I think it is also very cool how organized and professional they were throughout the entire situation.I think that all of these men have a strong belief in god and trusted him to get them out of that mine safely.

  7. Sofia-I would pray like a maniac and just hope to get out of there. Being in company of other people would help so you wouldn't be alone in a very scary situation. Caring for your neighbor is very important, no matter what the situation is.

  9. josu-the thing that would help me survive and keep my hopes up would be to hear my families voices. They also probably had a graet trust in god so they would pray every time they thought they couldnt make it out alive. Each of the men probably made a strong unite while they were trapped in the mine. they would help each other no matter what happened.

  10. Gabby- The thing that would help me survive would be other people. If I was down 2,300 ft underground alone, I would for sure give up hope. Just the having someone down there with me would help tremedously. Other important things like food and water would help ,too. What this situation would tell us about the human spirit is that when human set their minds to something they can achieve anything, even if it's almost impossible. I think the public would be horrified if anything happened to one of the 33 miners, and especially if people weren't trying to their furtherest ability to help them. It's also just the right thing to do. The most important thing about this whole situation is that the 33 miners got out safely.

  11. Halle- It was very brave of those men to be all happy and keep having faith because if I was down there for 69 i would go crazy. I would just try to remain calm and just keep praying that help would come and pray that i would stay in good health and that i would be able to see my family again. It just shows that if you set your mind to something and pray u can do it. I think it was very important and helpful of all the people that gave their time to help all the men that were trapped in their. It took them a long time to figure a way to get the men out and it took them about 2 days to get them out

  14. Maddy- If we americns got trapped in a mine for 69 days i dont thing we would have survied because we are not that smart to build a elevator like what the chilliens did..... That's just what i think.. But another thing is that we gave the chilliens the suppplies. So we would have all of the supplies it's just coming up with a way to get all the the miners out....

  15. Danielle- I think if I were trapped in a mine for that long I would be yelling and screaming for help! Like Ryan m, I would also pray like everyday so i wouldn't die. I would also miss my family like mad. Those people were probably being so patient and trying to stay calm. We Americans are trying to help chile be a better community.

  16. Morgan- To be able to survive for that long of a time would be very hard but as you can see they all had hope and spirirt to survive so they could see their loved ones. The willingness of all the rescue workers was very brave. They were putting their lives on the line to.

  17. Angie- I think it's inspiring to everyone for how the Chilean miners worked together and were able to survive that long. Yes, they did send down some stuff, but it was just a small cave with a bunch of people. If I were stuck down there, I bet I would have gone crazy. I would probaby pray everyday too. But I would have been really scared to have been stuck down there for so long.

  18. Kaed- People are right about praying to God. He will always help when you call to him. Also being down there would be boring, terrifing, dark, etc... But I know I could never do that. Those miners soul has to be very brave. Well that's why they took that job.
