Cultural changes come in many forms. The changes can be dramatic or subtle. They can alter our homes, industries, economics, education and relationships or slowly morph society as innovations develop. While texting may not appear to have life altering effects, there is no denying the widespread influence of this technological invention in a short period of time. Men, women, children, grandmothers and grandfathers have found countless practical and frivolous use for sending text messages. In addition to staying in constant contact with friends, acquaintances, and family members, it is used to receive notifications from the pharmacy, vote for your favorite reality star, and become alerted to your bank account balance. There seems to be no limit to the texting phenomenon. While it has many benefits, its use has sparked debate on many fronts. Is it good to have instant access to each other? Are we too connected? Is the use of text messaging ruining our ability to talk? Is our society doomed to survive on what we can say in less than 250 characters? Has it become our latest addiction?
The Idaho Statesman ran an article indicating the laws put in place to stop texting and driving are having the opposite of their intended effect. Many motorists are refusing to stop texting, whether writing or reading, while driving. Instead of putting the phone down, drivers are attempting to hide the phone while they text, further decreasing the attention they pay to the road. Ludicrous.
Like it or not, texting is part of our culture. It has captured our imagination and encourages us to interact more frequently with one another. Although adults and teenagers spend too much time attached to their device, we are more active communicators than ever before. The bigger issue is not the use of texting, but the lack of social etiquette.
- How often are you in line at the store and the person in front of you slows everything down because they are on the phone or in the middle of texting?
- How often have you been in the car with your parents and instead of talking to them you are texting with a friend?
- Are you unable to carry on conversations because you are constantly interrupted by the buzz of your phone receiving new messages?
Phillip-I think you should NEVER EVER text and drive it is dangerous and just plain dumb. You should never text when at meals or when you're with your friends or parents. I've also seen people texting to their friends when they are sitting at the same table. In the futer i think people won't communicate face to face as much, but we still willbecause not everybody has a cellphone. This is because they can't afford them or they think they're just not neccessary. FIRST COMMENT!!! YAY I'M SO PROUD OF MYSELF!!!
ReplyDeleteAngie- Well I think texting is useful. When you just need to tell someone something but don't want to call them, you can just text them. BUT I think some people are too obsessed with texting. And I think that you shouldn't text while driving EVER. It's really stupid of someone to text WHILE they're driving. So texting is really half and half. It can be helpful and it can be bad.
ReplyDeleteAtticus-I agree with Angie that texting can be useful when you nead to talk to someone but you dont want to have a hour long conversation with them, you can text them. BUT there is a limmit, ( as mrs.G says) "Driving while texting is 5 times worse then driving while drinking." Also when some people text it is just too much, they can be sitting next to each other and texting. In the futier it might become even worse. so texting is good aslong as there is a limmit.
ReplyDeletewell i sort of agree with atticus and i sort of dont because texting can be helpful for telling parents were you and talking to your freinds occasinolly. but i also think that it is a huge hazard to our populatiion because a whole bunch of peopoole get killed by texting and drivin and even cossing the street and so my point is they usually crash or get hit by a car.
ReplyDeleteSORRY THAT COMMENT WAS BY RYAN MELVIN
ReplyDeleteRyan Z.-I think that texting is a good thing because it signifys a huge advance in technology however I totally agree with Phillip that texting and driving at the same time is stupid. Yay you just got a date but WHAT GOOD IS IT IF YOU'RE DEAD!!!! I mean seriously what's more important some message on that tiny screen or YOUR LIFE!!! I also think that texting while you're with your friends is fine but never around your parents. Because seriously it's not that involving I think you can take a tiny bit of your time away from your friend. You still have ears you can still listen and most people text so fast that it doesn't even matter, but parents think that you're totally ignoring them and won't belive you when you say you're still listening so just don't try it! BEST ART CLASS EVER TODAY!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso when you are texting and your friend goes to look at your phone to see who you are texting don't hide the phone it's weird and annoying. They're your friend aren't they just show them the dang phone!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna change the profile pic every week now. (for Student4)
ReplyDeleteDanielle- Txting can be fun and useful. I agree with Angie, some people just go a little overboard with it! But texting while driving is way worse! Txting while driving can resolve death. Also it is not good 2 send inapropriate pics or txt messages to people. So there are good in some cases but not in others. So use choose ways while txting!
ReplyDeleteDanielle- at the eand I mean choose wisely while txting! sorry haha!
ReplyDeleteHalle-I know texting is a really big part of my life. But a good rule is NEVER text and drive it is very dangerous. I also think that when you are around your parents, like in the car, talking to the etc... you shouldnt text because it is actually pretty rude. How many people have been hanging with a friend and talking to them and they are texting someone else? And if you ask them a question they dont answer right away? pretty annoying right. it bugs me
ReplyDeleteMarya- yeah, never txt while driving. you will die. and, i agree with halle when your friends are texting and it takes them 5 minutes to answer a question like, "do you want ketchup or mustard on your hot dog?" anyway, i want a phone, i really want a phone. but i guess i won't know if texting is good or bad until i get one. but i'm going to go with good (unless you don't die from texting and driving or your rude with your phone)
ReplyDeleteoh yeah and art class was an AMAZING EXPIERIENCE for me today (:
ReplyDeleteTravis-I think that texting and all of the other technology these days is outragious, i mean you can do everything that you need to do in an entire day with out making any kind of contact with another person at all. Texting while driving is completly stupid and should most definitley be illegal, but i think texting is a good tool to use when you are not able to call someone.
ReplyDeleteSofia- I think that texting while driving is insane and absolutely not needed. Texting can be useful though, when you need to talk to someone but you are in a loud place or you are in a situation when calling someone would be outragious you can just text them. But when you are driving pull over and either call the person or dont reply to the message or dont even look at your phone and throw it in the back until you aren't driving anymore.
ReplyDeleteGabby-I think that while driving is very dangerous. Sometimes when my mom gets a text while she's driving she asks me to read it to her then write something back. But in the grocery store maybe 30% of the time someone is texting or in their phone, so they slow down the line. In the car I usually wait until I get out of the car to respond. I never cannot carry on a conversion because of texting, but it might be a problem for other people. It bugs me so much when people text like, lol or stuff like that is so annoying.
ReplyDeletecooper- Texting has become a large part of our everyday lives. Sometimes people abuse texting, which causes people to loose touch with one on one contact. I thinking texting and driving is irresponsible and causes many car accidents. It is getting to the point that they should make driving and texting illegal.
ReplyDeleteMaddy - texting means a lot to me. But texting while driving is reall dangerous. When somebody texts me when im talking to someone else i alwasy answer the text then go on with the other convsation with the other person. It really makes them mad..but It's kinda like a habit..
ReplyDeleteKaed- i really dont have a phone so i really dont know what its like, but my brother has one and he got addicted when he touch the phone. Also I dont agree with the people who put the commets that say dont text in front of parents, but u can around friends.NO!! thats just rude. what if one of your friends was texting instead of talking to u. youll feel horrible right. but i think the reasons are good and bad. Bad because texting and driving is just plain stupid. Just like ryan z. said i got a date, but you cant go if your dead!! Good because you can text your friends instead of calling them every 3 seconds. Im i right or im i right.
ReplyDeletecristina- texting is a good way to communicate but it shouldn't be used while driving.it's so dangerous and it can kill you or another person driving. it should be made a law if it isn't already.
ReplyDeletejosu-tezting can be useful in some cases but it could also be very dangerous. texting and driving is very wrong and stupid. when people text they should use proper english to practice communicating with other people(good texting). in the future alot of people will be texting each other instead of talking to each other.
ReplyDeleteMorgan- Texting can be good and bad. I think it is good if you have to tell somebody (can you bring my...). I think it is just plain stupid to text somebody hi or have a full on coversation. What is really anoying is that when you are upstairs from someone or stting a few chairs away that you have to text. It is so impersonal. Just pick up the phone and call them. Texting while driving is another story. It is so dangerous. Think of all the lives you are putting on the line. Everybody thinks texting is great. It is so overrated. Texting is ruining our daily lives.Knowbody should havae to text every minute every day. Oick up the phone and talk. Know days people dont even know how to start a conversation or carry through one. I think in this generation that we are overusing texting. We would rather text a friend or talk to your parents. This just tells you how much texting has overtaken our lives. Just rember when you text do you really have to, put down the phone and have a real conversation.
ReplyDeleteluke- i think texting is very dangerous and is very dumb when driving around a 5,000 pound car and when you crash you are almost instantly dead. so i think we should all make the smart decision and not text while driving. but if you are not driving or something texting is good to communicate with friends and family.
ReplyDeleteHannah- Well I think texting is useful because if you just want to say a quick hello or something. However people need to text less I think. When I was at Disneyland I saw a lot of people texting which I thought was stupid because Disneyland is expensive and you are there for rides! Also I think it's rude to text when with friends or family. And texting while driving is just stupid and dangerous *does this still count for points even though I am late?*
