Illegal Immigration

Immigration has been a controversial and volatile issue over the past year. On April 24, 2010, Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, signed Senate Bill 1070, dramatically changing the current practice concerning immigration.

The law has been controversial since its inception. While many citizens of Arizona and many politicians support the bill, many more, including President Obama, are fighting to prevent the bill from becoming law.

The law allows local law enforcement to stop anyone they suspect of being an illegal alien and require the individual to produce papers showing their right to be in the country, whether that be a green card, driver's license, or passport. People unable to produce the documents can be arrested and detained until they produce the documents or are deported back to their native land. While many feel this law is giving officers the needed tool to control immigration, other believe the law opens the door to illegal stops based on skin color or physical characteristics.

Illegal immigration is a problem in the country. Illegal immigrants do not pay taxes, take labor jobs from willing workers, and utilize public programs without contributing to the community. In addition, drug trafficking has been traced back to Mexican drug cartels using illegal immigrants for distribution.

On one hand, we have the rights to protect our borders and provide for our citizens. On the other hand the Constitution does not allow illegal search and seizure. Asking for someone to provide proof of citizenship without cause can be viewed as a violation of the 4th Amendment. From a philosophical point of view, the United States has always been the land of opportunity opening itself to those wanting a new life.

Do you agree or disagree with the Arizona law? If you agree, why? If you disagree, what if anything, should be done to protect our borders from illegal immigration?

  1. It's hard to agree or disagree. It's bad and good in some ways. I mean all our ancestors were immigrants and we came here for freedom. If we close the border, then people won't be able to have that kind of freedom. But then again it is bad how illegal immigrants don't pay taxes and stuff like that.

  3. Atticus- I disagree, because I think the police should not just be able to pull you over and make you show them your papers just because they are Mexican. I also think that the U.S. government will have to spend money(protecting the borders)to save money(not having to pay to aid illegal immigrants).

  4. Morgan- I agree with the law not letting illegal citizines in the U.S. This will keep the U.S. a safer place. But I think that everybody that asks for a visa should get one. Granted we should look through everybody history and make sher they are safe. My coach tried to geta visa because she is from New Zealand and she stiil cant get one. As the article said that the U.S. is know for starting a new life. Ithink everbody should get a chance to expience that.

  5. Halle- I agree with the law. We do have a right to protect our citizens. And if they didn't ask someone who looks like an illegal immigrant and they really were illegal could smuggle drugs or something. Better safe than sorry

  6. Ryan Z.-I think that this law is a good idea because we need to keep less people from getting across the border. i also think that every American citizen should be required to carry some for of identification it would greatly help homeland security, because how hard is it to carry your driver's license around with you? NOT VERY!!!! I also think that this law will keep our south-western states much much safer. We should also watch our Canadian border because several terrorists and drug dealers have gotten into our country that way.

  7. I disagree with the new law. I disagree because they could randomly pull over someone like Marcos just because he has mexican in his blood. This is stupid. imagine if you went to mexico and you got pulled over for no reason whatsoever and asked for your papers. Would you be affended? I would be_ (my computers not letting me do periods so i will do this_) Think about it_ I still think we should stop illeagel immmagration though_

  11. gabby-i think that this law is crazy. how many people in arizona look like "an alien"? a lot of people in arizona are mexican. what does suspect look like? it depends what the local law enforcement thinks. i personally think that some of the police might be little to high and mighty. they might get a little cocky, the law just gives them to much power. not all police will/might do that, but it is still a possible. i strongly disagree with this law but i do think the usa needs to try to reduce the amount of illegal aliens.

  13. CRISTINA!!! - For this blog, i agree and disagree. Yes it is good to pull mexicans and ask if they are an american citizen but it is also no. No because what if they were american citizens but didn't have they're papers in there car or where ever the police stop them! At the same time, iz bogas and reasonable.

  15. SOfia- i strongly disagree with this law because what does suspicious look like anyway?? This is a very racist law and i think that it should be revoked(Don't know how to spell that)

  16. Maddy- I agree to the Arizona law because people have worked hard to be american citizens. I also Disagree because i think it's racist for cops to pull over a different race just because the color of there skin to see a green card or license without having a reasonable cause.

  17. Hannah- I agree with the Arizona law because it is not fair for immigrants to not pay taxes and take jobs. Also we have the right to protect ourselves. Yes, it may seem racist, but wouldn't you rather have someone pulled over and end up being a citizen then let a possible terrorist or drug dealer get away? I think it is better to be safe then sorry. However, I can understand why people do not like this law, I would be offended if I was the person getting pulled over, but I think I would understand- the people pulling you over are just trying to protect everyone.

  19. I agree with the government cause they are just doing something to protect the citizens of the USA. but i disagree also cause if marcos was driving around in his hotrod and the police pulled him over cause there is mexican in his blood it is just plain stupid imagine if every 20 min you got pulled over cause you were mexican

  20. I do not agree because that is not fair if the government is letting these people from some of the borders than why does Arizona get to be any safer

  22. Marya- I LOVE THE STUDENT 4 PROFILE PIC!!!!!! okay anyway, i agree with the law because it's not fair at all that illegal mexican's can just come over and live off of welfare and not pay taxes and everything. i also disagree because it is kind of racist. if mexican's want to come to america, they either get a passport and deal with all of the papers, or they don't come. thats my opinion

  23. Kaed- it really depends to disagree or agree because think about all the poor people in Arizona and they cant come here because of that law. And its also racism. But I also agree because its also protecting the U.S.

  24. Travis- i agree with the arizona law, i am from texas and know how frustrating it is to deal with half of the school being hispanic. im not trying to be rude, racist, or steriotyping, but i do think that they should be allowed to take aliens back across the border
