In the recent weeks, Pakistan has been experiencing a horrific flooding situation. According to one article I read, 20 million people have been effected by its devistation and up to 20 percent of the country is submerged.
Typically, in cases of natural disasters, citizens across the globe, specifically in the United States, call for help and begin collecting chartiable donations to help those in need. For example, within the first two weeks after the Haiti earthquake, $560 million was raised by private organization to aid the people. For some reason, the call to charity has been lacking with respect to Pakistan. According to the same article, although the United States has pledged $200 million in aid, private donations has total approximately $11 million.
Why do you think the collection and distribution of assistance has not been as generous or as widely known?
Angie- I think that the reason why the earthquake in Haiti recieved more money in aid and was more widely known than the flood in Pakistan is because Haiti was strongly effected by the earthquake. When the earthquake hit Haiti, it damaged and injured more people and things because Haiti's structures and buildings aren't very strong. And since Haiti is already the poorest country in the world, they recieved more attention.
ReplyDeleteLuke- I think that the flood was devastating imagine if 20% of the United states was covered in water and 560 million dollars had to be made to rebuild the city.
ReplyDeletejosu-I think that there hasn't been a long enough period of time time between these two tragedies and people think that since they gave so much to Haiti that they don't have to help the people in Pakistan.
ReplyDeleteRyan M-i think that the flood was very devatating and i wouldnt like it to percet of the land was i water. i think that it is really mean of us blowing of pakistan and that we spent so much on Haiti.
ReplyDeleteHalle- I think that since Haiti is one of the poorest countries, it is more widely known thank Pakistan and that's why it hasn't been as generous That's why people didn't realize that pakistan is basically in the same situation as Haiti.
ReplyDeleteCrstina- I think that much more money can go to Pakistan than Haiti. Think if your country was covered in water, even though Haiti is one of the poorest countrys in the world. I am glad we are helping haiti but America should put a little more money in for Pakistan.

Phillip-I think that we should split the money evenly between Haiti and Pakistan evenly. They both need the money because both of thier countries are falling apart. If we cannot do that, then we should put the money towards Pakistan because we've been giving Haiti money for like a year now.

ReplyDeleteDanielle-Well the earquake in Haiti was much more of a disaster because all the buildings that were destroyed and the injured people, so they had to pay much more than the flood in Pakistan because the flood caused less of a damage, and the buildings in Pakistan are more secure and steady.
ReplyDeleteMorgan-The Earthquake in Haiti was more well known because everything was destroid and Haiti is the poorest country. Their was more funding put in because we knew that Haiti wouln't be able to rebuild itself. I did not hear of the flooding until I read the article so I think that most people don't know about it so they are probebly not going to give money.

ReplyDeleteRyan Z.-I think the flood in pakistan has received less aid than the Haiti earthquake because Haiti is closer to Home. people aren't hearing as much about the flood because pakistan is thousands of miles away and news doesn't travel all that well. I thin k it is sad that we are not aiding Pakistan more because they really need our help.
ReplyDeleteHannah- I think that Haiti has received more financial aid because Haiti is so poor and the earthquake killed so many people so fast. Meanwhile in Pakistan the flooding has not killed as many people-but it has the potential too. I think people are waiting until it gets worse, which I think is bad because we want to stop it from getting really bad. Plus Pakistan is by the war and across the world, but Haiti is really close.

ReplyDeleteMarya- OH YEAH!!! i got on. i thnk the flood in Pakistan was horrible. the earthquake in Haiti was also devastating but, people should look at reality and see that the earthquake is over. people over the world have helped Haiti and now it's Pakistan's turn to be helped. i'm not saying we shouldnt help Haiti. i'm just saying that Pakistan needs more help right now.
ReplyDeleteTravis-THe reason i think that the americans have not been as charitable with their donations to pakistan as much as they were with haiti because people feel bad for the haitian people because of their horrible economic situation. And i believe that when most people think of pakistan, they think of the middle east and when people think of the middle east, they tend to tie that to iraq and the countries that we are at war with at the moment.

ReplyDeleteAtticus- I think the desasters in Haiti were just too close. Haiti is too poor because, the earthquake that had happened earlier in the year ran them out of money and now the fludding. All Im trying to say is people nead to help Haiti.
